‎"Have you learned nothing from Fox? You pick your narrative and you stick with it -- and if the news doesn't fit your narrative, change your f**king news." - Jon Stewart, explaining journalism to MSNBC

FF to the 6 minute mark to see what a scumbag Hannity is.
A good example how FNC makes up stuff.

Furtherman posted this in the daily show thread but thought it would fit here

The Sanchez bit at the end was hysterical too.

Yea, if they wanted to bring up the Jesus crowd being terrorists there are plenty of examples (Eric Robert Rudolph first and foremost). You don't need to bend the truth if you're trying to point out that every religion has terrorists.

Whoopi says it. Like it or not shes right. It doesnt matter WHY they do this. Their religion doesnt condone terrorist acts just like the Christian religion doesnt condone blowing up abortion clinics. Holding a religion resposnible for the acts of a few of the followers is moronic.

And OReilly started that shit when he says "Muslims killed us." What a retarded comment. I could only wish they killed that big mouth. Still Barbara Walters was right, Whoopi and Behar look like bratty kids walking off their own show.

You can hold a religion responsible if a persons irrational belief kills another person, specifically when the people who perpetrated the act did so in the name of their God. That does not imply that everyone practicing that religion feels that way, but there are centuries of history behind us full of stories about the anger of a multitude of Gods. The same thing that gives some religious people comfort gives others hatred for anyone outside of their beliefs. Of course at the end of the day of course the people who committed the act are the only responsible parties, that's the justice available, but my point is that the continued erosion of one's reasoning mind doesn't exactly slow the slide down that slope.

As a Christian I'm not offended by you saying "Christians blow up abortion clinics". That they are extremists is understood and doesn't need to be explicitly stated.

They were all Muslims and being Muslim was the basis for their actions, however perverted their views were. How much specificity do people need? Does he also need to mention that they were all males from certain countries and all within a certain age bracket?

I think the problem with Bill's point was that he was saying "they" want to build a mosque, "they" killed us on 9/11. So, he is intentionally or not grouping all Muslims, extremist or not, together.

I can see the objection to his assertion. On the other hand, if a catholic blew up an abortion clinic I could see the objection to a catholic church being built around the corner from it.

It's an idiotic statement, however I see his point. Muslims do stand out wearing that garb. I don't see them as terrorists, I just see them as silly religious traditions, but many close-minded Americans will think "terrorist!".

However, that statement does go against NPR standards, and he can't be saying such things on a national forum and expect to be viewed as a NPR employee.

In Dude!'s world the only way this firing would be fair is if NPR comes out every day and gets angry at Jesse Jackson, as if NPR currently celebrates and loves Jesse Jackson.

NPR strives to be an objective news source, sometimes to the point of annoyance. Do you not understand that Juan Williams was not working as a shock jock? NPR has a reputation to hold up and they don't want to be associated with comments like that. It's that simple. There's no huge liberal conspiracy being led by defenders of Jesse Jackson. The constant mentioning of Jesse Jackson makes absolutely no sense, and only exists to create a left vs right issue that truly does not exist.

EDIT: Sorry, the second paragraph is addressed towards Dude!, not Barnaby.

Again, he is working for a news outlet that is trying to remain objective. Making controversial comments on a mainstream media outlet got him fired. Period. Why do you think it's Juan Williams job for NPR to say things that people think, but don't say?

If Opie and Anthony went on FOXNEWS and made a similar comment and Sirius fired them, I'd agree that it was way too harsh. He's not a weatherman on the today show that says the f-word on air, he represents a company that strives for journalistic integrity (one of the last sources for it, btw).

Here's a better question. If Juan Williams wants to have this role on FOXNEWS, why is he working for NPR?

Maybe he just wants to work for Fox. I think he actually subbed for OReilly a few times. Now that he is no longer with NPR. I can see them giving him his own show possibly on the weekends or on FBN.

This could work in Williams' advantage. He can expose himself as a victim as a left leaning pundit who was forced out by NPR. Throw in that NPR is subsidized by taxpayers and he's got a ton of people on his side.

It does seem that he had a troubled relationship with NPR. (http://www.foxnews.com/opinion/2010/10/21/juan-williams-npr-fired-truth-muslim-garb-airplane-oreilly-ellen-weiss-bush/) It seems they tried to keep him off Fox before, he refused, so they made him a contractor, to insulate themselves. I am not sure if he was introduced as an NPR employee or representative.

NPR can fire who they want. However, I think it is foolish to think all people don't have similar thoughts, whether they are based on race, religion, sex, etc.
We can only move forward when we acknowledge this and work on ways of mitigating any issues that might arise because of it.

Williams' connection to NPR wasn't mentioned when he was first introduced, but O'Reilly brought it up, Williams seemed to cringe when he did.
Williams was making a legitimate, fair point. People are afraid of Muslims, especially those that seem to identify as Muslim above everything else, while we can not let this fear interfere with their protection under the Constitution, we must recognize that radical Muslims pose a threat to the world, possibly the largest threat.

I agree, if NPR wants its journalists to not state personal opinions, creating an impression they are biased on any issue, that is their right.
I just have a problem with Williams' remarks being made to seem extreme or hateful. His remarks are technically bigoted, but not in the sense the word is usually used.
It does seem that signing a 3mil deal in 24 hours is a little quick, but maybe Fox is hoping to cash on the publicity and the chance to bash the "left wing" media.

If he said, "I get nervous when I wait in line for security screening. I didn't do anything wrong, but I get anxious. Maybe we should stop worrying about terrorism so much and focus on other issues."

Would they have fired him? It is his irrational personal feelings.

I think that is out of context. I think the context is "taken what Helms believes then he will get AIDS", not "I hope he gets AIDS."

Nonetheless, I am aware that the media is even more sensitive about Muslims than they are about blacks, with white males being free game.

Furtherman has said it himself before and I've asked him numerous times to explain why someone who acts explicitly as a troll and basically describes himself as a troll is tolerated! Why is it so hard to answer a simple question?!!!!!?

I think that is out of context. I think the context is "taken what Helms believes then he will get AIDS", not "I hope he gets AIDS."

Nonetheless, I am aware that the media is even more sensitive about Muslims than they are about blacks, with white males being free game.

Sadly, the fact that WF had to go back to a 1995 clip that is iffy-at-best in proving his point, will not make WF realize that he has no point.

Whatever the context you think is she was obviously not a Helms supporter and she wished that him and his family would get AIDS.

Did you read Serpico's post about context? She did NOT wish AIDS on him and his family. That may be how your right-wing radio show sold it to you, but listen to the quote.

And the time is relevant. Juan Williams got let go for comments he made NOW. Do you think NPR is the same exact organization, and the world has the same tolerance levels as 15 years ago?

Because CNN fired Rick Sanchez for his comments, do you think it's logical that they'd go back 15 years in their archive and fire anyone who made similar comments?

Of course.

HBO is Pay Cable - you get what you pay for. Don't like it? Get rid of it. HBO doesn't have to bow to any advertising pressure that a manufactured outrage would disturb.

Say it on CNN or MSNBC, you'd get a little manufactured outrage, but he doesn't work for them, so it'll be gone the next day.

The point is the "outrage" is manufactured and saying "where is the outrage?" is as pointless as the manufactured outrage itself. Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain.

So in an interview with The Daily Beast, Fox News boss Roger Ailes calls Jon Stewart "crazy", and says this about him:

He acknowledged Stewart's smarts, but ultimately concluded that he "hates conservatives" and that he "is crazy." Ailes didn't stop there: "He loves polarization. He depends on it. If liberals and conservatives are all getting along, how good would that show be? It'd be a bomb."

So here's Ailes, who, as he said, doesn't like "polarization" and thinks liberals and conservatives should get along, on NPR:

"They are, of course, Nazis," Ailes said. "They have a kind of Nazi attitude. They are the left wing of Nazism. These guys don't want any other point of view. They don't even feel guilty using tax dollars to spout their propaganda. They are basically Air America with government funding to keep them alive."

Ah. So Stewart is preaching "polarization", but calling an organization you perceive as opposed to you "Nazis" and repeating bullshit lies about their dependence on government funds isn't?

You responded: "if someone kills another human being, regardless of the victims country of origin, outside of defending yours or someone elses life, that person should be put to death."

If he had asked what should happen to the people who actually kill the Americans, then your response would make sense. But you ignored the entire tricky bit about the leaks leading to deaths. Not the act of homicide, an act enabling or inciting someone else to commit homicide. It's a vast difference, and you ignored it completely.

Voters Say Election Full of Misleading and False Information (http://www.worldpublicopinion.org/pipa/articles/brunitedstatescanadara/671.php?nid=&id=&pnt=671&lb=)

In most cases those who had greater levels of exposure to news sources had lower levels of misinformation. There were, however, a number of cases where greater exposure to a particular news source increased misinformation on some issues.

Those who watched Fox News almost daily were significantly more likely than those who never watched it to believe that most economists estimate the stimulus caused job losses (12 points more likely), most economists have estimated the health care law will worsen the deficit (31 points), the economy is getting worse (26 points), most scientists do not agree that climate change is occurring (30 points), the stimulus legislation did not include any tax cuts (14 points), their own income taxes have gone up (14 points), the auto bailout only occurred under Obama (13 points), when TARP came up for a vote most Republicans opposed it (12 points) and that it is not clear that Obama was born in the United States (31 points). The effect was also not simply a function of partisan bias, as people who voted Democratic and watched Fox News were also more likely to have such misinformation than those who did not watch it--though by a lesser margin than those who voted Republican.

It is all about striking up fear of minorities, people coming after christmas, etc to deflect the fact that their (ie, republican) policies help the upper class more than the middle or low-income. Fighting against safety regulations in business, fighting for continued tax cuts for the rich all in the name of trickle down economics... but if you scare people into thinking it is minorities taking free handouts to buy drugs and immigrants coming to kill you, and atheists coming to take christmas, and liberals coming to take your hunting rifle, then the rubes will vote for you.

I'm progressive. Why do you think I want immigration laws changed? Does it have anything to do with the belief that the current laws are racist? If you think this, then I really feel sorry for you. No, if you believe private charities and churches do a much better job helping he poor you're ignorant and naive.

I'll give one example. A percentage of homeless people (who are also repeat violent crime offenders) have serious, diagnosed mental illnesses. We lack the resources to deal with this problem. Do you think random charities could ever provide the necessary infrastructure to deal with these people- ensure they are in a safe environment (safe for them and safe for the rest of the public) while guaranteeing they receive their prescribed medicines? No fucking way. Not to mention, this isn't even about helping the poor or mentally ill- this also helps keep our neighborhoods safer. But it takes money and an infrastructure to deal with a problem like this. Slogans and random charities don't solve real world problems.

So a few days ago, Mississippi governor and big fat dumbass Haley "Derp" Barbour made an ass of himself by praising the White Citizen Councils, a group dedicated to fighting desegregation. So how did the Fox Nation website report on this?

http://www.talkingpointsmemo.com/assets_c/2010/12/haley-barbour-fox-sg-cropped-proto-custom_2.jpg

So how did Barbour "fend off" these "leftist smears with ease"? By this statement:

"When asked why my hometown in Mississippi did not suffer the same racial violence when I was a young man that accompanied other towns' integration efforts, I accurately said the community leadership wouldn't tolerate it and helped prevent violence there. My point was my town rejected the Ku Klux Klan, but nobody should construe that to mean I think the town leadership were saints, either. Their vehicle, called the 'Citizens Council,' is totally indefensible, as is segregation. It was a difficult and painful era for Mississippi, the rest of the country, and especially African Americans who were persecuted in that time."

Hmm, that doesn't sound like "fending off" to me. Instead, it sounds like "totally covering my big fat ass after I said something incredibly racist" to me.

Fox News: when you have to choose between reality and protecting a Republican, protect the Republican.

Obama pwned O'Reilly in that terrible interview. He came off as calm and collected, while O'Reilly just seemed like a douchebag. Pretty much the way they are, really.

I have to question to the wisdom of the timing of that interview, anyway. If you're going to have the President on in the pre-game show, you should probably just toss him some softballs about who he's rooting for and what snacks they'll be having at the White House Super Bowl party tonight. That sort of hard-edged, very partisan tack that O'Reilly took is sharply at odds with the overall feeling of that show, and I think a lot of people were bemused or bothered by that interview.

I didn't understand the interview at all. O'Reilly would ask Obama a question, Obama starts to answer, then O'Reilly cuts him off and comments on the question he asked rather than on Obama's answer.

Also, I can't even comprehend how people think Obama is "far-left" anymore. He jumped to the center almost immediately after getting elected, and has slowly been distancing himself from the "far-left" more and more since. He put up a short fight against the "right", but him saying he respects the point of view of FOXNEWS, a network which has been misrepresenting him and everything he believes in for the past 3 years is incredibly disappointing. No thinking person should respect the message of FOXNEWS.

That's great. It's funny bc I had a similar experience and it's not even closely related to my field. My old roommate's best buddy worked for them and actually gets some face time here and there when they need someone to explain graphs and where info comes from. Time to time he ran shit by me and I'd rip it to shreds. So oddly enough he put me in there system to work in his ass backward department even though my degree is pre-med/bio, and this job mainly involved stats and analysis. Not saying I couldn't do it, but there was no way in hell I could simply bc of where it was.

I had a very similar conversation with the recruiter and I think they take it as a sign the channel is doing it's job. Let's be honest, even though they say one thing, they aren't really hiding their bias any longer at all. The funny thing is this was shortly after I got out of college so the salary range was more than I was currently making. Not that I had an outright offer, but the opportunity was there. I didn't feel like having a fiddle battle down the road so I passed immediately.
