No way!? Did they say who's hosting? I know alot of people who will be happy about this. But it has to be done right.
When they tried to make an updated version of 'Yo MTV Raps' it wasn't a hit.

Metallica will be hosting the show.
I also anticipate the new video that night as well as it is being shot today I believe.
Speaking of Metallica...I read an interview with them in Revolver last night and i am excited. Just reading "fast and heavy" and "just when you think the song is over and a riff comes out of nowhere and knocks you on your ass" gave me chills. I hope this is good or else I will sell every record and CD I own. Swear.

HOLY HELL!!!!!!!! I saw an add for this last night!
Even Metallica hosting the 1st one can't ruin this for me!!!!
I'm VERY happy to hear this. Metal fans like me have been forced to live without Metal on TV for too long now. I've been watching "Extreme Rock" on MTV2 when it's on. It's been cool to see In Flames, Kataklysm, Propain and many others on there again.
But I do have my concerns. If they start to mix shit that's NOT METAL into the video mix like they did last time, it will begin to SUCK and metalheads will abandon it just like they did last time.
I hope MTV learned from it's mistakes.

I agree SuperClerk. Some of this new crossover shit is barely Metal, but it's the hardest music out there making videos.
If they don't AT LEAST show 1 or 2 request videos from back in the day it will be a real disappointment. I want MORBID ANGEL!!!!!!
Hey, how about Moribid Angel Amy?

Amazing band. I need to see that. The Manowar video was pretty cool too.
Morbid Angel as much as I love them, I think really lost some spark when David Vincent left. The image of Trey biting into his arm will forever be burned into my mind.
The new Overkill is AMZING. They never cease to amaze me and are always reinventing themselves. Killbox 13 I highly recommend.
I also call for a gathering if anyone wants to get together. An evening filled with HB memories and then the new show at 11. I got enough tapes to provide. Anyone? Anyone?
Chee-tos?
Pop?
Ice Cream?
The batch rag for the late night porno on low budget cable......
The new Metallica cd has already leaked onto the internet
Not sure where you found it Jon but I just checked most of all the Metallica St. Anger downloads available on Kazaa and some shrewd crafty little someone took old songs and gave them the new song titles. How ingenious.

Just a quick concern.
I was watching Extreme Rock on MTV2 last night, and they played a hed P.E. video.
THESE GUYS ARE NOT METAL!!!!! So I already have a problem with what MTV might consider Metal. They better get some REAL Metalheads picking the line-up or take A LOT of requests from Metalheads.

Bring Back "Closet Classics" and the movies they used to run (like "Woodstock", "The Song Remains The Same", etc) and maybe MTV will be "Music Television" once more.

You know that they're not going to be playing any Death Metal, or anything like that. It'll be all Evanescence, Linclon Park, Incubus, Limp Bizkit, 3 doors down, smashmouth, good charlote, blink, sum41, and all that other safe crap with guitars....
Guys, MTV is too concerned with pissing people off and alienating their impressionable pre-pubesent audience. Hell, Fear Factory was too heavy for Mtv to play, and they're mostly Industrial, so they won't be playing any Carnivore, or Morbid Angel, or anything like that...

Do they even play music on any MTV channel anymore? MTV2 was cool for a little while, now it's like MTV only more pathetic. I agree also that the music they play will likely be like Limp Biskit or Linkin Park and not a true metal or death metal band. It just don't fit no demographic.

JerryTaker may unfortunately be right on this one. I HOPE that they understand that METALHEADS, not Total Request assholes will tune in and watch METAL videos, but they will definitly water it down with many of the bands he listed. For example I like Linkin Park but they are NOT overly heavy.
It's going to be a tense first few shows. Do they make it METAL to please us old Heavy music fans or a showcase for this Nu Metal shit that is already on the decline, in my humble Metal opinion?
I want OZZY! I want PANTERA! I want DEICIDE! I want HYPOCRICY! I want SLAYER! I want IN FLAMES! I want SEPELTURA! I want SUFFOCATION! I want FEAR FACTORY! I want KATAKLYSM! CARCASS! BENEDICTION! I want it ALL, including the old stuff like Iron Maiden and Mercyful Fate. Hell, even a Black Sabbath video would be fine. Gotta respect the Metal roots.

KC, i honestly doubt you remember the old school Headbanger's Ball.
Anywho. . . I'd like to add this little fact. MTV is becoming unpopular to the other demographics and by bringing back HBB they hope to bring the metal fans back, well it won't happen because they will play mostly the Rap/Rock shit and i know that isn't metal, they will also bring in "punk" and the show will be a poser-fest. I'll give it one shot with the 1st episode, and if it as most of us suspects. . . then well. . . I'm going to boycott MTV for making a mockery of metal

I want it ALL
Before I was fully educated to the beauty of Queen, I remember being so PISSED that this video was being aired.
As much as I was pissed that HB changed, music at the time was changing too. The BIGGEST mistake that MTV made with it was this:
1) The Poisons, Bon Jovis, Warrants, Def Leppards and even Aerosmiths and Mtley Cres of the world were not only being played in the regular rotation due to their Top 40 status but were also taking up a good 10 spots on the Ball where there could have been other lesser played videos
2) The much changing movement of music in the early 90's pretty much killed the metal scene dead. Alice In Chains, Soundgarden and the like were not exactly metal but they were still heavy, thus the birth of SupeRocK. Good idea, HOT host, Slayer in a diner which was way cool but just a bit off course of what the metalhead was craving.
Hell, my musical tastes grew also and even though my heart and soul wer bound in the steel of metal, it did not hurt me one bit to explore other genres I may have missed. During the formative years of the Ball, I remember seeing videos from Sick Of It All, Agnostic Front, DRI (pre Thrash Zone) and other stuff that was heavy. There was such and stil is such a varied opinion of what is heavy and fast and crunching and the like that it will be impossible to cater to the needs of everyone.
I seriously think that with the time and effort and especially with the likes of Iann Robinson who knows his "heavy" shit there wil be a good representation of all. I don't want the all death metal or all glam metal hour. Same as I don't want the all power metal and speed metal hour. As cool as they may be. Lets just hope that the full diversity of heaviness and rockingness is done justice.
I go back on all my tapes of old shows and therew was such a diversity of bands played. Sure you HATED the Pretty Boy Floyd video and screamed "What Fags!" at the TV but tell me you weren't just tickled pink when the Obituary video would come on after it. Or even when you would have the unlikely duo of King Diamond coupled with Faith No More and then Kreator.
THAT is what made the Ball so special for me. Not to mention the following Monday in school alking with friends about which videos were seen and in some cases, not seen due to other outside interferences. Maybe even a weekly recap here would be kind of a neat idea. Getting everyones different views on what they liked, didn't like and so on.

I caught the new Ball.
WHAT A FUCKING JOKE!!!!!!!!
JESUS this was a let down! They played that FUCKING hed P.E. song I didn't want the too! FAGGOTS!! And not ONE Death Metal video. The highlights were the old Metallica videos they opened and closed the 2 hour show with. In between we were disappointed with shit like Powerman 5000 and Stained. WHO THE FUCK are The Datsuns? They're not Metal, I'll tell you that.
Some of the OK videos they played were Super Joint Ritual, which I really don't like, Hate Breed which is a Hardcore band, and Godsmack which you can see in rotation on MTV2. On, Black Label Society was on too. That was actually good.
I had a thought last night after the show too. Did MTV forget that they run The Osbournes? They didn't play ONE Ozzy video! Not even an old Sabbath video. Why? That was stupid.
Next week's show is being hosted by Rob Zombie (woo hoo) with special musical guest Stained (gag). I don't think I'll be tuning in for too long, if at all.

I kept shaking my head. Hatebreed I could deal with casue they have the metal feel even though they are hardcore. Shadows Fall, Superjoint Ritual and High On Fire amazed me that they were played. The old school Suicidak was great too. But yeah Moe, no Death Metal, hardly any guitar solos and Powerman, Staind and Hed PE? Come on. The BLS I could tolerate but where was the Slayer? Priest? Maiden? New Anthrax or Overkill? The countless numbers of bands who are still metal and NOTHING!
I was disapointed but I am willing to give it time. How much time, not sure but at least a montht o see what he viewer feedback dictates. Plus the rumored host is the girl who hosted the metal show on Much Music and I hear she is quite good. The MTV2 messge boards were overflowed with bad reviews and tons of negativity so maybe MTV will pull theit collective heads out of their asses.
I hope.

I'm not as patient as you are Fluffernutter.
But I had a disturbing thought. What if today's Metalhead IS the audience they were playing videos for.
Maybe we're never going to see the good old Metal we love because they are going to play this Nu metal and other softer, pussy metal.
It sickens me, but then again it's not mu music. So it'll just be another show for people who like music that's not mine. I don't complain about Sucka Free Sundays because it's not for me, maybe the new Headbanger's Ball isn't for me either.

Honestly Moe, I had the same thought. Hell, I even asked my friend who grew up watching the Ball with me "If we were 18-22 now in our formative years of music would we be listening to this shit?" Of course he said no becasue he was always a bit more intot he more obscure stuff than I was but I was into it all.
Maybe that is the case and back in the day what was there but heavy metal?
Well, besides all the RAP and POP and NEW WAVE and DANCE and PUNK.
Music was so much more categorized back then and was just in maybe the above categories. Throughout the 90's and into the singles now thanks to there being so many groundbreaking bands of ALL genres the categorization is very grey now. You have your metal of the likes that are still metal and claim to be metal but with all the hybrids maybe this is what MTV thinks is now metal and we will have to sit through this other tripe just to see the errant "video we like"
As much as I would LOVE to see there be more metal in Headbanger's Ball and on MTV2 in general I also realise that with the internet, even though it is not the same as being surpised as shit when "the band you love" has a video right there on TV in front of you, the videos are currently accessable through band sites, various music video sites and even Kazaa and other multimedia download sites.
I know I would love to see WSOU's or even Eddie Trunk's playlist on the Ball but I seriously think we are so far past that that MY expectations last night are never to be realised.
This is why it KILLS me when MTVX {the metal, punk hardcore, extreme metal (death, thrash, speed and even black) channel} decide on May 1 of last year to switch to MTV jams. Excuse me but doesn't MTV paly mostly Jams and Hip Hop and all of that on a daily basis ANYWAY. Even still if you have the digital cable you have VH1 Soul which plays a handful of the Jams plus the good soul of the past. Nothing like seeing those Marvin Gaye live performances. MTVX was awesome and commercial free too. The closest thing to the old school Headbangers Ball is the Metal Mania on VH1 Classic. I am totally satisfied with that as they really pull out some old shit.
I also have a good 65% of the old Headbangers Ball arcived on video. So I just pull those out everynow and again.

I guess I'm in the minority, but I don't want ANY "shows" or programming blocks on MTV2. Back when it was M2, you'd just get hours and hours of radnom videos across the genres and eras, and nary a VJ to be seen...

Did they atleast play Danzig?
Something definatly happened when the alternative shit got big in the 90's. The bands that followed sucked. And they still suck. Too bad the MTV audience would never watch a real metal show. Kids today would watch Suicidal Tendencies? or PanterA, Sepultura, Slayer or Sabbath? Fuck no, they're too busy playing with thier little pusies and jerking off to Britney Spears.
Mad props to Fluff for the sig and C.O.soup for hosting!

Thought I'd ressurect this post to get some more feedback on the current state of the Ball, and of course, give you MY opinion.
It is 80% shit. They play the SAME Machine Head video EVERY WEEK, and it SUCKS.
The only really good shit Saw on there was AC/DC's "Thunderstruck", some Hate Eternal and Strapping Young Lad. There were some OK retro videos. I remember a Judas Preist song. Shadow's Fall is pretty metal. Hate Breed is still Hardcore, but a welcome change to the usual shit they play.
But most of it is this pseudo-metal shit that aggravates me.
So anyone else have an opinon after a few weeks of the show?

As equated with the old show, you have to wade through the shit to get to the goods.
I have kind of discounted the fact that MTV is going to play its general bunch of "shit" and nu metal stuff but overall, I have been prety satisfied. When I get that same charge to go out and buy something I have heard on there, its a good thing.
If it were not for seeing the Hammerfall video, I would not have been on my current blaze of metal (The Haunted, Iced Earth, In Flames) I have been on. I LOVED that. They are all the good parts of Manowar, with some Priest and fast thrash parts thrown in. Sure it is leather and fur metal but I eat that shit up. Bottom line, it is metal!
Seeing High On Fire's (heaviest band TODAY) video was great as well. In Flames video got me to pull out the Reroute album and rediscover it. I have since gotten most everything else and am going to see them on Tuesday with Soilwork whos video I also saw on the New Ball. Videos from Voivod, Superjoint, Sworn Enemy and the MIGHTY Lamb of God* have made me happy as well.
Jamey Jasta from Hatebreed has been ok as host and I like him more than Rob Zombie who is well past his prime. The glam of today is still prevalent with the more metal of the pop nu metal (Disturbed, Godsmack, etc) and then there is the whole industrometal stuff too which I can deal with. The face of "metal" has morphed and transformed so much, this is what we have now. I loved the glam stuff back in the day because it's roots were planted in KISS, AC/DC and Aerosmith and had that extra Metal Edge to it so it was passable in my book. It would be refreshing to even see Looks That Kill or another old school glam classic that you could not deny was cool as shit.
The best episode by far has been the New England Hardcore and Metal Festival. I am glad that MTV has not sunk to playing the Linkin Park or Evanescene because that is a bit too pop. Leave that for the kiddies during the day.
*Lamb of God by the way have released the record of the year with As The Palaces Burn. That is some fucking amazing shit!
No Maiden in 6 weeks? I frown upon that. Maybe with the new album and tour something will come. No DIO either? Not even any Overkill or Testament?
