I couldn't think of a more pertinent case where an abortion is needed. A retarded women who was raped and might die having the baby? Who the hell would make this woman go through that. And what the hell is going to be done with a baby who was born from the genetic material of a retard and a man who felt the need to rape a reatrd?

Can't Jeb put politics aside just once? What he is doing is horrible, and if this woman dies, he is partly responsible.

Man this is a rough issue. Thanks for the link Hbox. That one provides more information, and in fact makes it seem like the first article melded together two different cases into one.

This woman was violated, and that is terrible. That these things happen in places where they are supposed to be protected is outrageous. This happens too many times for it to continue unaddressed, all across the country.

Now, here's the issue. The woman is incapable of making her own decisions. She can't legally make the decision to abort her child. Would it make more sense to abort it? I think so, yes. The State though does have a responsibility to the unborn child and I can understand their position on assigning a care worker for the fetus. This is why the abortion issue is so crazy and can never be solved. Is the woman in danger? The second article doesn't say that. Is the unborn baby gonna be retarded too? Doesn't specify. It could come out fine and be given to a family for adoption. I think this is a terrible issue, and it would be safer for Jeb to let the abortion happen. I'm inclined to say abort it and Jeb stay out of it, but I can see where he is coming from with this. I would hope that he cares as much for the fetus as he does for the woman who carries it, as both are (in some way) children. I don't think that the fetus should be aborted just because the woman was raped however. Other women have been raped and kept the babies, and this woman might have done the same if she could tie her own shoe even. Damn, what a f'ed up world we live in sometimes. It is tough, and actually I do tend more towards the pro-life than pro-choice, but in this case I feel you have to consider the woman's life first, no matter what. What bothers me so much is Jeb Bush's apparent disregard for her life, and my gut tells me that her mental disablities have something to do with it. I mean there are three very strong reasons to allow the abortion; the medical condition (assuming she really is at danger), the rape, and the woman's mental condition.

But a far more disturbing issue at the base of this whole mess is the apparent rapes that are happening with these mental patients.

This woman CAN'T make the choice, did you read the article? That's what this whole issue is about. I think they would be better aborting the fetus, but it's not that easy. What if the woman wanted to keep the thing? You don't know, and neither does the State. You can't automatically assume she wants it gone, and so if the State just aborts the thing they could be considered murdering it by their own laws. This whole "it's a baby if you want it, and tissue if you don't" thing that the law permits is a complicated issue, especially when the woman is completely unable to make the choice herself.

It's impossible for this woman to care for this child. Unless there are people guarenteed to step up and care for this child, EVEN if it's retarded, or it's practically a given she'll survive the birth, the thing needs to be aborted.

according to the article the woman has the mental capacity of a one year old child. if she survives the pregnancy would she even understand that the child was her own?

There's no confusion, and I am in the belief that this fetus might be better off if it wasn't born. There are two "lives" under consideration here, and neither can make a legal decision. I completely understand the State's desire to ensure both are treated equally.
