I believe if you are going to apply for a city, state, or federal ID you should have to show your complete face. Until we have the capability and machinery to scan fingerprints or retinas in every police car and public instituion where ID is neccessary you must be unveiled. Follow your religion, I admire you for that. Just don't expect to drive a car.

I am, and always will be,in a state of sulky dissatisfaction.

What he said. I understand respecting someone's religion and all, but come on. This is defying the very reason you have a license to begin with.

they have to unveil for their I-551's aka Green cards, so i don't see the problem. They usually don't see the problem if the husband is allowed to be in the room when the photo for that is taken.

I think that the religion doesn't forbid them, its the male dominant bent to Islam that does. The Saudi's for example forbid women from driving for any reason. I guess there are no soccer moms there.

Off with the veil lady, unless you are a superhero then its okay. How did Batman and Robin get their licenses?

I can just hear the Iraqi information minister:

"There is no problem, her picture has been taken and is posted all over the internet. She has driven before in the Indy 500, there is no case"

but seriously, she wasnt even born to that religion shes a convert shes not even 100% its like sammy davis jr being jewish.
Bottom line be photographed or dont drive, terrorist or not threat or not, how do we id that person if we cant see her face, this could open the door for lots of fake ID's.

no it's not.

Islam is not an ethnic group. It's the same as Christian, you have many ethnic groups under the religion of Christianity. If someone converts to a religion, they're belief's aren't put in any percentage other than 100%(believe) or 0%(don't believe)

Judaism is a religion and an ethnic group.

Why should religion allow anyone to escape those horrible mug-shots or photo IDs. We all had to go thru it at one time! NO makeup or paisley-colored contact lenses either.

This case is the very definition of frivolity.

It only serves to take away from the REAL cases of discrimination which are in the court system.

Just a quick point...

First of all, I think if you're choosing to have a license, you need to have an identifiable photo on the license. You're choosing to have this responsibility and accept the rules and laws that go along with it. This is a "government thing", right? Can't they somehow press the "seperation of church and state" flesh here? Religion, culture, deformity, WHATEVER should be moot when it comes to universal issues like this.

BUT...apparently Florida issued this woman the license with no problem quite some time ago, and she had it for several months before this issue even arose. Coincidentally, AFTER 9/11. Could just be coincidence. But despite even that, why wait so damn long? Why not handle what's OBVIOUSLY a friggin' problem when it HAPPENED instead of way after the fact?

In our society, we always have tension between freedom and liberty. So in this instance where we have the rights of an individual to practice her religion as she believes God has commanded her balanced against society's right to ensure public safety, I believe this question should be decided on how fugly she is.

Yes, she has the right to practice her religion. but she does not have the right to drive. driving as we know is a privilege. if she wants that privilege, then she should conform.

Driving is a P-R-I-V-I-L-E-G-E not a right. Fuck the cunt.

Besides maybe they can put this mugshot of her on her driver's licensce.

http://www.courttv.com/graphics/photos/trials/freeman/inside/offlede/freeman-sultaana150w170h-insidesmall-052703.jpg

On his cross-examination of Freeman, Vail pointed out at least one instance in which Freeman had been photographed without her veil after her conversion to Islam - for a mugshot.

In 1999, Freeman pleaded guilty to aggravated battery of one of two foster children, and the twin girls were subsequently removed from her care.

Holding an enlarged, mounted copy of the mugshot, Vail approached the witness box to ask Freeman about the arrest but was rebuffed.

"This is absolutely outrageous conduct on behalf of the state," called out Freeman's lawyer.

Judge Janet Thorpe, who will decide the case, denied Vail the opportunity to cross-examine Freeman on her legal history, but allowed the attorney one question.

"Ms. Freeman, have you ever been convicted of a felony?"

"Yes, I have," she answered firmly.

Tuesday afternoon, four employees of the Florida Highway Department testified about different facets of the state's license program, from what types of facial adornment are acceptable for license pictures (large glasses, long hair, thick makeup, and long bangs are OK - as long as a "full face" shot is obtained) to how many temporary permits have been issued in the past five years without photos (more than 800,000).

Court TV is airing Freeman's trial live.
