RF.Net, The Next Version

now that foundry is 99% complete, i am thinking about upgrades for the next version of ronfez.net...

any suggestions? (i don't need "get this to work....or more FILES...) I need improvements in functionality...section suggestions...that sort of thing...what features have u seen on other message boards that you would like to see here?

here are some planned improvements for the board:

1) New look and feel - Message board window will extend the full length of the screen.

2) Polls within topics! yay

3) user selectable avatars

4) new improved quick html

5) Improved thread rating/sticky threads

6) Thread Hit Counters check to see if user has viewed a thread instead of just adding a number arbitrarily.

7) Mod Accountability trackers. User will be informed of which moderator took action on a thread. Mod will be required to input a reason why thread is being acted upon, which is sent to user and me. I'm sick of trying to find out who did what.

8) Subscribe to a Forum - choose to receive an email when a new topic is posted, if enabled by admin.

9) Improved Security. All passed variables are tested for sql code and parsed. Gluck proof.

10) Member posting statistics. Users can see average posts and posting frequencies in graphs. kinda fun.

11) URL's are automatically parsed and URL tags added.

12) Thread Message Icons

13) Better RFMail Controls

The 1st thing that comes to mind is to make the multiple pages of newly updated threads on the Home page available.

If a thread on the home page has more than 1 page, I have to open the main page, then select the latest, top page. That slows people like me with a dial up down.

Also, if you're not going to update it, remore the chat room and event calendar. That's just a suggestion to save you space, if you need it. I see very little use of the chat room, and no one ever updats the calendar.

The only sugestion i have is to be able to see all the posts in a thread when you are replying to a thread.

Other than that, all the planned improvements look great and are really gonna make the board better.

First off Jeff, thanks for your great work in providing a home to us and making it so stellar for so long. We don't often slow down and think about what makes this go, and on this occassion, I'd just like to offer a heartfelt thanks. I've been a member for over a year, a lurker for far longer, and a frequent user, abuser and peruser of Foundrymusic, and a barebones site would float my boat, but what you guys have done is just great. Well done.

But in the interest of improvements, the one thing I can think of is a longer duration of being logged in. I've learned my lesson, but lost many a long post when I clicked "submit reply" because I wasn't logged in and I didn't save my message. It'd be cool if it wouldn't log us out after 5 minutes. Many boards I visit have a cookie to keep me constantly logged in. While it's far from a necessity or a prerequisite, the option might be nice.

Thats all that springs to mind, but if I think of more, I"ll shout you a holla.

Get the polls to work on the front page or get rid of them completely, and update them.

Make the Media Section Easier to use somehow, get rid of sections that have nothing in them.

Update the event calendar regulary or you can get rid of that too

Stop with those "Thank you for being a member" pages.

I'd change "Ask Horde King" to "Ask Horde King and Too Cute" My change is not suggested to take anything away from Horde King. He's done a great job parsing out information and advice to the members of RF.net. However, It's nice to have two, occasionally dissenting, voices answering questions. Also, Too Cute is certainly putting in the time, so she should probably have her name on the door as well.

Note: This suggestion is completely unsolicited. For all I know, Too Cute would rather hang in the shadows giving out useful information.
