View Full Version : SOFTBALL GAME TRAFFIC WARNING
TooCute

I put this in its own trhead so as not to be missed.
I realized (duh) today that there have been signs up for the past two weeks announcing GREEK FEST at Jones beach this weekend. Nevermind that it looks to be the first big beach weekend of the year (no rain, finally!) - the traffic getting to the beach is going to be NUTS. Unfortunately, Jones beach is at the ned of the Meadowbrook parkway, sort of on the way to Amityville.
Your options are to either leave super early, take the train (very easy!) or:
I know in my directions earlier I mentioned that taking the LIE or the Northern State to the Meadowbrook to the Southern State would be the quickest way. IGNORE THAT. Unless you leave early and the Meadowbrook doesn't seem to be too backed up (but I have a feeling it will be).
If you happen to be coming via the Nothern State (named the Grand Central in Queens) or the LIE (495), take those all the way to the Amityville/Huntington rte 110 south exit. Either one will get you there in about the same amount of time (so if you're on the LIE and its sucky and you see an exit for the northern state, you could theoretically pop over to the northern state and avoid the traffic).
Take that exit (110) SOUTH towards Amityville. 110 has lights on it, and the traffic may be somewhat annoying, but I can almost guarantee that it will be moving faster than the Meadowbrook at 11 AM on the first good beach day and greek fest day. Then take 110 South all the way to the end (takes about 15-20 minutes with light traffic) and the directions are the same as earlier (take to end, go left on merrick road, turn right at first light (bayview) and go to end; field is first field on the corner as you get to the park (will be obvious when you get there).
Usually Amityville is less than an hours drive from NYC. I would bank on 1.5 - 2 hours with this traffic (you are contending also with the people trying to drive out to the hamptons, remember) unless you leave very early. I can't emphasize enough how easy (and pleasant) taking the train is, even if you can drive to a LIRR or NJTransit train near you and leave your car there and take the train from there. We will get you from the train to the field. Don't worry. Just let someone know when you plan to be there so we can coordinate a shuttle system.

Luckily this is one event that is pretty close to me (coming from Huntington), so I'll be there pretty quickly and easily.

yea, i guess so, because it's heading towards jones beach. I guess I said that because TooCute neglected to mention that. Of course, you could always take local streets, but I guess that's too confusing.

One more thing TooCute... This is the field that's right on the water, right?
(edit)If that's the case, that would mean the street is called SOUTH bayview... sorry, that confused me.

The field is at the Amityville Village Beach, the FIRST one on the left as you pull into the park. There is parking on both sides of the field. There are three fields there, we are the FIRST one as you pull in (left side).
Yes, the Wantagh should be just as bad as the Meadowbrook, maybe worse. Same with 135 I would imagine.
This is not Feta Cheese Greek Fest. It's the annual summer "Fest" for the traditionally African-American fraternities and sororities and people come from all over as far as Florida. All my Q-Dogs, Kappas, APhiA's, Sigmas, Alphas and Deltas will be representing, showing off their keloid brands and doing their thing while we do ours....
So yes, between that and it being probably the first real beach day of the year, I would suggest the alternate route(s) Too Cute posted already.

Forgive my rudeness, but SateliteCam, are retarded? If you
know so much about Long Island then take the fucking
Wantaugh(sic) for all I care. I could have posted that it was
also possible to take the Seaford/Oyster Bay expwy, the
Bethpage, the Cross Island, the Clearview or any of the
other dozens of north-south rds if I wanted to. The
Meadowbrook is ordinarily the fastest. Not tomorrow on
greek beach day. I am betting on 110 being the fastest. So
GUESS WHAT I POSTED? I didn't "neglect" anything, Critty
McCritical.
Take the left on Merrick Road (also called 27A and Montauk
Highway, just so I can confuse you more and btw I don't
think there is a sign there HA HA) and take the right at the
first light. You don't even need to know the name of the
street. And I think the sign says Bayview, anyhow. If
you're going to be thrown by directions that say turn at a
traffic light on a street clled Bayview and the sign at the
light actually says S. Bayview, you probably shouldn't be
navigating.
If you're familiar enough to know that the pask is at the
end of SOUTH Bayview, then you don't need to know the
difference. If you haven't got a fucking clue about
Amityville, you're not even going to know that there is a
NORTH and a SOUTH Bayview to even be confused by it.
Okay?

I know nothing about the Long Island highways. I was just looking at a map at the time. And, I'm riding my BIKE there so I'm planning on finding a local street route (Sunrise would be good... if it had sidewalks).

oh how i don't miss this weekend of traffic on LI. a couple of years back i made the mistake of jumping on the Southern State on the weekend of the Greek Fest and it was a parking lot. for some reason everyone wants to pull over and get out of their cars. i've never seen so many people standing on the side of a highway...or parkway.
