I just applied for Social Security Disability and SSI. My doctor says that I will probably be accepted. If I get SSI I will be eligible for Medicaid. Does anybody here have any experience with Medicaid? What does it cover and what will I be responsible for?

HBox - As I'm sure you already know, SSDB provides disability benefits to those found to be permenantly and totally disabled. The amount of benefits depends upon the amount of money you made while working - up to the maximum statutory amount. After a year on SSDB you automatically become eligible for Medicare part B (hospital) and you can apply for Medicare part A (medical).

SSI (supplemental security income) is a benefit available to people with limited assets and income and can supplement SSDB. SSI is awarded to the elderly and disabled if they meet income eligibility requirements.

Medicaid covers hospitals, doctors and medicine only. It does not provide direct cash benefits. The advantage in your situation is that with medicaid, you'll have coverage immediately, whereas you'd have to wait a year for medicare coverage to kick in.
