I feel ya Craig. But as a person who wears black, I must say that I do not do this to get attention for it. I just wear black because that's what I've come to like. Black fits my mood. Is it depression? Is it some morbid death fixation? I don't know. I'm a pretty normal person to meet and talk to. Well, ask Grim and Todd EVF, maybe I am an asshole. I don't know.

Most of these little kids are doing it for the attention, but like 1 out of 5 are doing it because that's who they are. They feel it in their souls. Black fits your mood. We can't all be happy people weaing shit eating grins all day. Some of us are tired of faking the smile for a world that doesn't understand us. MAN! That was SO After School Special of me to say! ZING!

Now I will also admit I see this as a phase many of the 1 out of 5 do grow out of either through a natural progression or they figure out that no one will hire or date them like that.

So my advise to you is to ignore these kids if they bother you. And stay out of malls as much as humanly possible. I KNOW they have everything there, but DO NOT just go there to hang out on days you might be overly bored. I know you're not a teeny bopper, but I've even had to stop myself a few times.

My standard of normalcy is pretty broad. I'm talking about people who just need a fucking prozac and a blow job. sounds like you hate an aweful lot of peopel who are being different, where i just am annoyed.

If you PURPOSELY physically seperate yourself from people by the way you dress (same thing applies for people who wear hard core religeous garb in public) you represent yourself as different. If you are the same as me, and want me to get to know you... buy a polo shirt and some kackis. By playing dress up you become someone different on the outside, telling everyone around you that you dont want to be around them, especially when that message is one of creepy "darkness".

Im not exactly up on my lingo, but Trashy, i think you would be labeled a punk more than a goth, and i think a few of you are getting confused on the diffrence. Punks wear chains, baggy baggy clothes, can have tans, go outside (more than gothics), and listen to hard rock most of the time and punk, be it good or bad. No, i think the point of dressing like this is not to make a statement for the most part it just reflects you as an individual. So actually it is to make a statement, "This is me, this is how i am comfortable, this is how i like to dress"

I think the most disturbing part of this thread is that people are actually saying that they dont talk to others because of the way they dress. I talk to Craig, he wears Hawaiian Shirts, that's his preference, those are the shirts he likes, doesnt mean that i have to like the shirts perse bc i like him as a person, not as a piece of clothing. That goes for everyone else, i would not not go up to a person and strike up a conversation because they wear black makeup, or baggy jeans, or hoodies, or jerseys but that is just me.

With all that being said i used to dress like these "creepy" people.Wrist stockings, baggy UFOs, cute little tee shirts,whacky hair styles and lots of color,/beaded bracelets. That was when i was 16-17. As you get older your tastes become more defined to suit your individuality, i do not dress like this anymore, i am more comfortable in jeans and a hoodie or simple tee-shirts and shorts. Maybe it's a phase, maybe you'll grow out of it and maybe you will dress liek this for the rest of your life. Either way, the way people choose to dress should not in anyway affect the people they choose to talk to.

This is my own personal opinion and i stand by it.

There are a lot of sweeping broad generalizations here but for the most part I believe people understand (as does Craig) that he was expressing his opinion, not facts.

No one has to hang out with anyone they don't want too. But I am troubled by some of the things said. I've tried to incorporate as much factual information as possible to address the points raised by Craig in the very first post.

The word "Creepy" is subjective in nature. What creeps one person out is perfectly normal and acceptable to another. Craig is entitled to his opinion of what constitutes creepy, as long as he doesn't go out and try to hurt them, but there are several important caveats to this.

1. Dressing all in black may very well be nothing more than a fashion statement. Several people have commented on this, and it is of course a valid point. Some people just like to wear black b/c they look good in it. Would you feel these people were "creepy" if they dressed all in white or red or blue? If not, then it's not the black clothing that you feel makes the person creepy, it's the associations you make about people who wear these clothing. (Satan worshipers, wiccans, etc.) All are forms of religious expression.

2. It's a tremendous overstatement to say about people who dress like this, no one likes you
. Aside from the people who dress this way to make a fashion statement or to look good, there is an entire culture of goths for example who accept and even expect other goths to dress and act a certain way. Even non-goths are typically not bothered by goths, although they typically have their own subculture that they belong too.

3. conformity isn't required but dont be disgusting and offensive.. What is offensive or disgusting in adapting a particular mode of dress or behavior. They aren't hurting anyone, they're doing what they want. If at a later point in their life they change their dress that's their perogative, just like it is their perogative to continue to dress in the manner they choose.

4 its not my fault you like negative attention. Although there are some who crave attention to such an extent that negative attention is just as rewarding as positive attention, I don't think that a mode of dress is a way of seeking negative attention. In people who dress this way to fit a particular subculture it is much more likely to be a way of fitting in with their crowd and gaining acceptance, not negative attention.

5. It's important to remember that the teenage years (and early 20's) are periods of rebellion. Some of the rebellion may be expressed in the way one dresses, but it's benign. Again, it hurts no one. It's somewhat amusing from an adult perspective that adolescents and young adults show their independance and individuality by dressing exactly the same as the rest of a particular subculture.

6. rebeling against authority for the sake of something to do is annoying too That is almost by nature the definition of the teenage years, struggling against authority and conformity to find their own individual identity.

7. You are most likely bipolar, which is ok, but get it taken care of. What in the world would give you that idea. It's simply not true. Wearing dark clothing may be one of many symptoms indicative of depression, but alone it is insignificant. It obviously doesn't remotely apply to those who dress in a certain way for fashion reasons - or religious reasons for that matter. Thanks for the info. but i dont think you get who i'm talking about. i'm talking about the people who think they are an extra in "the crow". People who clearly are making an effort to stand out. And my assumption of "pretending to be satan worshipers and wicaans" is based on converstaion. I never assume things that deep by a visual. Its the people who want to be evil, and say stuff to that effect. all my impressions are not 100% visual.

the whole point of my post is that people that make an effort to make themselves radically different that local social morays (sp?) bug me. i never said they shouldn't. just as i have a right to be ticked when a kid calling him self lucifer de morbido make a very public display of his stupidity, he technically isn't hurting anyone so hes free to do it.

It then turned into a free speach issue, when i realized that people who are "different" dont want the consiquences of their speach. its not censorship to call you an asshole if i think you are one. its censorship to have you arrested. free speach goes two ways and has consiquences (not moe's thread mocking this one).

My question is, where does it end? The Amish, Chasidic Jews, Indians, etc dress differently and have different customs which might be considered weird or outlandish by those not in the culture. Is it right to alienate them for staying true to their cultural identity? After all, they're not making an effort to fit in.

If I walked into work dressed up like a Ku Klux Klan guy, I think that the company might have a problem with it and it would certainly be within their right to punish me in some way for my attire causing stress on other people and causing lost productivity. I guess I could have been labeled a goth or whatever a while back but I grew out of it. I have a hard time taking seriously the "high school" goth because I always saw it as a social circle of the dark kids brooding by the water fountain or in a dark corner somewhere. I am guilty of it too cause I was with the metalheads. The punks had their corner and the preps and so on and so forth. It was different bck then cause in the pre NIN days, the goth kids had their hair dyed black, wore the eyeliner but didn't dress in total shambles . It was mostly, Robert Smith and Siouxie clones. Which was fine. The post-NIN goths just took it to more of an extreme and a mor eof a look at me now go away type thing that I never really got. They seemed to be a bit more depressed too.

Depressed. Ok, just be glad you have a roof over your head and food to eat and a place to bathe and sleep. Heart broken? Sucks but DEAL! Lost your job? Sucks but DEAL! After you graduate prepare to get life right up your ass. Then you will grow up, learn and begin to deal with it because you have become a mature adult.

I do have friends however who were in the goth stages and still stayed that way but became functional parts of society. So you wear black. Big deal. There are ways to come off as a goth or whatever without looking like a total freak at 25. I ran into my ex-girlfriend a few months ago and beside the fact she doubled in size, she is the same as when we split up. Broke. Jobless. Still looking like she fell in a tar pit and missed wiping out her eyes. I'm sorry but you can't be that fucking pathetic all your life. Unless of course you have no drive then it is all your fault.

I know a few who still dress like they did and are just too cool to change. They have almost become their own person just by looking how they always have. My one friend is like that. Still dresses like the goth she has always been and still practicing Wicca and she has a well paying job. Still damn hot too.

I accept the fact that we will do and see stupid shit while in the high school environment cause that is really all we know. I see no fault in that cause it is growing up and in a few years you can look back on your days of moping, destroying, wreaking havoc, and sticking it to the man and proceed to laugh.

I dyed my hair black. I wore eyeliner. I painted my nails. I was a lot younger and grew out of it. I guess if anything that is the only hope that these kids will too. Who of us really had it together when we were 18 or even 22. We were looking for a niche or a clique or some sort of social circle and then you did it. You found YOURSELF and all that searching as dark and as brooding it may have been, you ultimately found it.

At least some of us did.

My advice to those who are still searching and all black and in your teens. Shit will get a lot worse before you start to see the light of what life is really like. Do you really want it to be sunshine and daisies all the time?
