"Sands" is great. But personally, my favorite John Wayne movie would probably be "The Searchers", which I think is the best movie he made, although he won his only Oscar for "True Grit"
I'd watch "The Searchers", and I'd also reccomend the US Cavalry Trilogy, "She Wore A Yellow Ribbon", "Fort Apache" and "Rio Grande"
EDIT: And "The Quiet Man".....(*Impetuous!!!....Homeric!!*)

Not only have I never seen a John Wayne movie, but I've never even seen a Humphrey Bogart or a James Cagney movie either.
But I've seen Rocky 5. Does that count?

That wasnt a confession you moron, it was entertainment. And just so you know, men have feelings too. We dont all need to put on a macho front at all hours to reasure ourselves that were men. I startted watching that program 20 years ago when I was a wee lad with my mama who happens to be dead now and the show reminds me of her. So go douche out your freshly fucked asshole you motherfucker. I HOPE YOU SUFFER FROM GOHNERHEA!

But I'm about to watch my first.
Your first John Wayne movie shouldn't be one that he DIES in. I think Iwo Jima is the one where he gets it at the very end. Go watch Searchers or Stagecoach and report back.
I don't think they released any of his gay porn flicks yet,,,

Sands of Iwo Jima-- has actual scenes from the battle.
I seem to recall that it starts with the Duke leading the Marines at Tarawa. Those scenes were shot at Camp Pendleton and feature David Shoup playing himself.
Interesting trivia note: John Wayne never served in the military. During WWII, he had 4 kids and got a deferment.

"Sands" also helped save the Marines from extinction, because the Pentagon was thinking of eliminating them for budgetary purposes...(this was back when they thought you didn't need infantry to win battles any more, something that was proven wrong in Korea)

Watch the man in "The Longest Day".

The Chairman

For me the holy trinity of the Duke's movies are:
Rio Bravo (like the only movie I can watch 1,000 times and never get sick of: drama, action, comedy, sexual tension...it's all there.)
The Searchers (his best acting, iconic, really great although now considered un-PC).
Red River (his big breakthrough).

The Minneapolis Police are apparently following me though....
