(there's not enough room for my ...)

I always think I am going to come off like an uneducated jackass who has no idea what i am talking about.

I mean, I read thoroughly every CREDIBLE post in the Political threads written by many of the intelligent and well worded folk on this Board here but when it comes time to respond to anything I always keep my mouth shut. I have learned quite a bit on here over the last year and I love to read everyone elses opinions but I get all stumbled and stuttered up when it comes to my own for reasons stated above.

I have been recently listening to the wonderful NPR and not only just flat out loving the station but I feel I have been getting the straight non-biased news and I feel so educated while listening. Maybe one of these times, I can participate.

Question is, anyone else feel like they just have no idea what to say or how to participate without sounding like a complete imbecile? Or do you always feel the need to just be an imbecile and add NOTHING?

Kindest Regards, Your Fluff

Man, Fluff, you don't have to be a scholar to post in there. All you really need is a feeling on a topic.

Part of the discussion is learning sometimes too.

I wanna get involved too but dont for basically the same reason you dont.

I dont care to do much typing on thing outside of music and sports over the internet, so if I try to some up my ideas in like a paragraph or two it kinda comes off close-minded or loosely put together(lots of points missing) when I read over it, so I dont go through with posting.

But I am still young and maybe people will understand I still got lots of learning and researching on stuff to go in my lifetime. Maybe ill start posting in the politics forum more, If I start posting more in general, which I dont think Im gonna be doing.

Well, I learned and realized a couple of things, whther theyre right or wrong???...:

1. Politics is the Science of Polemic Obfuscation.

2. Read number 1 and realize that just because something has big words; it doesnt mean shit.

3. If they sound like they know what theyre talking about, they don't.

4. If they sound like they don't know, they don't.

5. I tend to make lists

6. Learn the very basics; because most of the Pols don't.

Examples: First amendment guarantees freedom of speech. It does no such thing.

We're a democracy yes? nope.

They banned prayer and teaching of the bible in schools. Again, never happened.

The above three are examples of people listening to other people and taking them at their word. The real answers to the above three examples may sound subtle, but they are quite different.

7. People, for some reason, has this idea that there are two camps in American Politics: The Democrats and the Republicans; each with its own philosophy and agenda and supporters and detractors.

Why Anyone could think that all the issues of the political spectrum: war, disease, crime, military, education, religion, guns, social security, etc could be distilled down to TWO choices is beyond absurd.

Personally, I take each issue, and think on it, maybe research it, and over time, my 'stand' on it emerges; my personal philosophy. I hope hope it is Mine, not just blindly following any group, be it Dems, Reps, Green Party, Libertarian, etc.

8. Study History. I mean the fun, fascinating history. And it's out there. Matt Damon mentioned a book that will blow the top of your head off. When I read it I was furious. So are most who read it.

Robert [roger/] Zinn's A History of the American People's from 1492 to Present.

People will say it's hugely left leaning. fine. Read:

Pat Buchanan: The Death of the West

People will say it's hugely right leaning. Fine:

[both of these titles I'm not sure of, theyre close though. Memory not awake yet.]

Get the ___ for Dummies books. My God I own a dozen, at least. They rock.

Lastly; do NOT believe what people tell you, INCLUDING THIS ENTIRE POST. I could be 100% dead on the nail wrong. So can everyone else.

Here's a few to shake it up~! A Quiz~!!

1. Name the Prez who suported the deciminalization of marijuana.

2. Name the Prez who opposed the use of marijuana as medecine, and supported legal punishments for doctors recommending it to patients?

3. Name the Prez that when, in 1970, Congress repealed minimum mandatory drug penalties, celebrated the act taht would 'result in better justice and more appropritae sentences?

4. Name the Prez: 'During this Presidents term of office, more people were arrested for marijuana than during any other U.S. Presidency?

5. What famous congressman introduced a bill in 1981 to legalize the medical use of marijuana?

6. What famous congressman sponsored legislation demanding a life sentence or death penalty for anyone caught bringing more then two ounces of marijuana into the US?

7. In a study of 14,000 employees at seven major corporations; it was found that 8 percent of hourly workers and 23 percent of managers regularly took what drug?

Hey, Mike!

You might be interested in this book. I brought it up in another thread, and it's easily at the top of my mountain of politcal/current events books. It was revised at the end of 2002 and is structured like an easy-to-reference enclyclopedia with every possible American politcal term and person and event you can think of, AND it's the size of a phone book. Great, GREAT reference to keep handy!

By the way, it comes from a whole series of "Handy Answer Books". I know there are ones on religion, physics and history. BUENO!!!

Agreed; and the whole point was, again, Who Really Knows??

I'm reading 'Reefer Madness' by Eric Schlosser yesterday. That was yesterdays book. And I am reading the chapter, and I'm seeing this stuff and I'm like WOW; its about the 'underground' part of US society: Migrant Workers, The Pot Industry, the Porn and Prosititution Industry. Fantastic.

by the way he wrote 'Fast Food Nation'. I could literally not put that book down. You will never look at food the same after reading it. Huge best seller.

As to the study I mentioned; studies are notorious for sucking. I read opinion polls all the time; they suck, it's multiple choice, and my choice doesnt even come close to any of their options. Like the pathetic poll i see when i log on to AOL.

Anyway: From the book notes, the poll was,
'Study Highlights Casual Drinking Effects on Productivity' from the journal; Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Weekly, January, 18 1999.

Which begs the questions. Where can i get this cool Weekly?

I just don't have the capacity to be a jackass in a political thread casue I respect what is being spoken about. Thats just how I am with political things, I take them seriously.

Thats a great recommendation for a book Mojo. I am gonna have to pick it up.

I also have to stop getting a lot of one sided (or so it seems) views on social and politcal subject from my current favorite socio-politcal commentator/documentary guy.

Dude, I hate talking politics, exactly because I know I don't know much. There's so much information, and then all the spin and opinion on it, and we have a global situation these days, so there are many new and different places and things, and I read like a sum-bitch and I come nowhere Near feeling like I'm keeping up.

At least with science, I can usually examine it, let's say some paper in Nature, or some new thing on Cloning. And if I don't get it, I can go back to the research, and the research before that, and find stuff out.

Alvin Toffler wrote about it decades ago; about a time where there would be so much daily information that it would be impossible to keep up with it all; even in a small, specialized field, say: computers.

No way anyone can stay on top of all us this. The feeling, the syndrome Toffler wrote about was the title of his most-famous Book:
