Toolish Teacher and the essay (somewhat) i wrote

Ok let me tell you the back story 1st. I have this one teacher (yes i'm still in high school. its my 5th year) who is a total friggin tool. Well, he gave us this book, Joy In The Morning and after reading the 1st chapter, or should i say attempted to read it, i hated the book. so the teach gave us a test on it. I failed of course, but one part was an open ended question part.

the question was. . .


1. Describe the events of Anne and Carl's wedding night, starting with the incident on the swing and ending with Carl falling asleep in the rocking chair.


here's what i put followed with what he put.

I am unable to tell you about the wedding night nor the incident. Joy In The Morning, I find a boring book after attempting to read the first chapter. Furthermore, I am unable to complete the assignment, or should I say test, because of my error of not reading a book I have no interest in. I understand the book is part of my grade, but I can't read a book that is dull and or boring. To do so would basically make me a conformist who takes everything handed to them with a smile and a Thank You. This conforming that mostly everyone does makes it seem like Nazi Germany. Actually, if you do your research, the schooling we have today is an almost exact replica of those in Communist Russia and Nazi Germany. There is no more originality, we are all cattle being herded through life, being told what to wear, what to look like. No wonder books like Joy In The Morning are part of the curriculum. Finally, I man not read this book, but I will learn what I can.

I respect your opinion and have no problem if you don't like the book, but I think you should make those type of judgements after you have read the book. I'm a {can't understand what he wrote} if The Clash never listened to any other music - The Beatles, Elvis, Buddy Holly, Richie havens. You can learn from both good and bad. But like you said, it is your choice.

now i want to know what you people think about this. (how would you have reacted, etc.)

As for the essay thing? Hey, it's American Citizenship and if you're in your 5th year of high school I'm assuming you're either 18 or about to be.

I did the whole thing. I didn;t graduate in the top half of my class; I was a suck-ass lazy high school student. My standardized tests were really high, but my guidance counselor didn;t help much, his son being one of the big Drug Dealers at the School. This was 1981.

So I bullshitted my way into Villanova and then failed out of that spectacularly. That essay is irrelevant in high school, sadly. It's the rest of your life you have to worry about.

Fail out like I did; it's not as fun when you realized you just took $25,000 of your parents money and flushed it down a toilet. So, if your path is college, perhaps best look elsewhere.

If your path is the marketplace, as the others have said, good luck. There are jobs where you Eat Shit. You Sell Out. You Conform.

My father was a salesman, he ate shit. So when he had to eat shit at another place he didnt want to be at he would take out the photograph of his Wife and Three Kids. It ain't conforming; it's taking care of what needs to be taking care of. It's Doing what you Dislike, because there is somethings a LOT Bigger then wasting your time on a shitty book. Like rent, food, clothes, medical bills.

Hey, ride the gravy train now. Enjoy! I sure did.

But if not for that father who ate shit Insisting I continue with School, I'd be some prole working for someone else, doing what I don't want.

Now? I'm the luckiest friggin' guy alive.

on a side note:
The teacher confronted me today. he asked me a few questions and then started talking about The Clash to me, then he asked me about a song by them, and i told him bluntly i'm not big on them so he told me to download some of their albums.

As for me taking a 6th year, its totally impossible for me to get a 6th year due to how many credits i've gained in the last 4 years. worse they could make me do is go during the summer to take the class over.

I do not plan on attending a regular college, btu a straight up film school. My standardized test scores are very high, but when it come to work i do not want to do, such as this book assignment, I just push it off.

Last night i did pick the damn book up and did read it all, cover to cover, every word, every sylible, every letter. And i found the book to suck even more. Since when do schools have its students read romance novels!?!

I had blatantly feminist English teachers in 9th, 11th, and 12th grade and I had to bullshit them in my papers (except for one on Sense and Sensibility which i actually spoke my mind about and called a piece of crap-i got a C on that paper). Maybe because it's actually harder to fudge on the details of events that took place than it is to pull a bunch of bullshit about themes and concepts out of one's ass? It's one way to see if a student actually read something.

But I do agree with the sentiment of TC's question. Just finding out if a student read a book doesn't matter. What matters is what was learned.

it's bullshit that high schools test to "prepare" you for college- not everone is college material. not to put anyone down, but we need people to do manual laboe, ie. skill trades like masons and carpenters, etc...

but, doing things you don't like in high school only prepares you for life. it's good that you read the book in the end, but i think the attitude that all children are special individuals contributes to the feeling of things being stupid, and not worth your time doing.

in high school i was an opiniated fuck.. i made it a point to talk about penis theories and educate freshman about the in's and out's of the gyno. i thought that by answering back to my teachers i would be the cool girl who fit her "non conformist" image. well infact i was remembered for my lectures about bombs and dicks were equal on some level.. but.. 5 years later im in my second year of community college.... sometimes its best just to speak up when you have an intelligent... well read, comment..

Alright, let me clear all this shit i started up.

1) The teacher is a tool. His teaching methods aren't unique, its more like he is just going by "An Idiots Guide To Teaching" And he's told me openly to illegally download copyrighted music.

2)Everything else, in school, i have no problem with. I'm doing all the bore-ass assignments, from reading that romance novel to other suck ass assignments.

3)I agree with the fact that some shit is boring and stuff, but when i'm paying to go to a school to do what i want to do with my life, i won't care if i have to do a 20 page paper on proper lighting during a night shoot. I'll do it, because film making cannot get boring for me. It interests me so much that i can see myself getting coffee for a director, being an actor person, or writing scripts for the rest of my life. Thats what i want to do.

4)High Schools offer many courses that should not be mandatory, esspecially ones that have had the requirement filled.

Who gives a shit about communist whosawhatits, school sucks, standardize testing sucks, many many teachers suck, I'm in school, i cant stand 80% of it (20 being the electives i take). Todd was just explaining that being forced to read crap garbage like this is stupid and doesnt make a diffrence in alot of people. Joining the Army? think they care that you read some romance novel back in High School and didnt do it? You think thats any diffrent for becoming a fireman, policeman, doctor, lawyer, judge, president, secretary of state, financial broker, etc. etc. etc. The point is, this crap is useless, but unfortunatly it has to be done to pass High School.

Todd, there is never gonna be a time when work will be totally enjoyable, especially once
you leave school. No one working anywhere loves it to death and relishes they
assignments, its the nature of the beast. Its your effort and perseverance that gets you
through it that you learn from, and they are trying to prepare you for when your really
out there in the world doing what you dont wanna do to make a living. This teacher
seems like a mush, and he's trying to win you over by placating you and he obviously
isn't doing the job as well as he should. By rights, you should fail because you didn't
complete the assignment. The teachers not suppose to be your buddy, he's suppose to
discipline you and guide you so you can handle having to do shit that you dont wanna
do. Just hunker down and do what they ask, because thats really what they are grading
you on.

Highschool was a double-edged sword in my own opinion. You either felt completely unmotivated or not challenged enough.

Simply put though, whether you agree with the logic or relevance of your assignments, get them done. I'm sure you don't want to be going on your 6th year of Highschool and depending on what you choose to make of yourself you really don't want to waste the better years your life has to offer in the 12th grade.

Now I know that there is always an "x" that needs to be solved, and I wish I had payed attention and learned it instead of making excuses. In your case Todd, your learning how to handle being given a job to do that you dont find particularly tastefull. Just get it done and learn how to deal with the boredom of doing the unpleasant.
