View Full Version : Confess-Do you stop for Yellow lights or run them?

I'm not talking about EVERY light you see. I'm talking about those yellow lights you see at the last minute and you have to make decide QUICK what you're gonna do. Now I know that how fast you're going plays a big part in this, but on average do you find you blast through yellows or stop?
I find that I stop for most of them. In fact, I find that I have that little anticipation as I drive up to a green sometimes that it MAY go yellow, and let up on the gas slightly.

really depends on where that yellow light is. in li, yellow lights last what seems like 10 seconds. upstate, it's more like 5. at this point, i can time both to usually beat it turning red while i'm underneath- which a cop can pull you over for.

That is a good point. I know that the lights up in Sussex and nothern Morris are a lot longer than lets say Totowa or Clifton.
But again, I'm talking about that last minute you HAVE to make a descison at.

last minute, sure. but i always have to look up to see if it turns red or not.
not that that really matters- if a cop wants to pull you over, it red. your word against the cop's in court don't mean shit.
so i guess i'm a rebel defying authority, or in a meaningless hurry.

Not only do I not stop at yellow lights, but if I can beat the red lights I do that as well. Sometimes several seconds after the light has gone red even. Though in all those cases I usually do a quick check around if there's a cop anywhere, and also look around the lights and utility poles to see if there's a camera. If there is, then I stop.

To be honest, that's what makes me slow down for them 9 times out of 10. Maybe you people can afford a ticket and insurance hike but I can't. I have 4 points that I'm trying like hell to work off. I can't afford a parking ticket, let alone a moving violation and extra insurance.
It seems like a foolish risk to take. Unless you'r rushing to get to the hospital because you have a patient on the table, what is your rush?

It all depends on how fast I'm going, and usually I'm going pretty fast. I ususally run them, but sometimes I'll stop, especially if my moms is in the car.
In fact, I find that I have that little anticipation as I drive up to a green sometimes that it MAY go yellow, and let up on the gas slightly.

The other day my friend was giving me a ride when we came upon a red light, and he just blasted right thru it. I said "What the hell are you doing", and he said "Don't worry, my brother drives like this all the time, and he never gets into a accident". A little while later, right before we are about to go thru a green light, he suddenly stops short. Once again, I say "What the hell are you doing now ?", and he said "Hey man, I gotta be careful......my brother might be coming the other way".

For me it's not that I can afford the tickets. I'm just a very concious driver. I have NO points on my license and I've only had one speeding ticket which was years ago. I don't do it all the time, but where I can I do. If I sense that the I'm approaching a dangerous intersection or an area where there may be a child I'm a lot more cautious.
I've also taken saftey classes which I highly suggest you or anyone who has points on their license to take. Not only do you get points taken off your license, but if you're a safe driver like I am you get discounts on your car insurance. If you have insurance like Geico, contact them about the saftey classes in your area. You go there for a day (usually 3 or 4 hours), listen to the instructor talk about saftey on the road. They show you videos and in the end you walk away with a certificate which you can present to your insurance company to get a discount on your insurance, and like I said you also get points off your license.

That was NOT my fault. Here I am in the middle of Jersey with NO clue of where I was, with two local girls who have NO idea where they are, one of which is on the phone with my brother and doesn't notice the exit we were supposed to get off at. Meanwhile folks are getting caught in the downpour outside the comedy club.

Local?....I'm from Central Jersey, not North Jersey. I fail to see the local in that!......I blame Amy for everything per usual.

i would argue that the better majority of people on the road are more on the aggressive side. r&f recently said (a couple of months ago) that old people are causing more accidents than 16-22 yr old males (who have led as long as i can remember).
isn't it time to take licenses away from the elderly? like grandma who will slam on the breaks when the light turns yellow from 100 yards away. public transpo for the elderly - and yes i know i'm a prick

Maybe they can re-design the traffic lights similar to how they have the walk/do not walk signals.

Yellow- foot and pedal to slow down

or how about a giant spike that comes out of the ground, and you have to beat that or possibly have yourself/ car impaled. you better have some confidence if you're going to beat that light.

Think of how it would help the economy turn around- people would need to buy more tires or parts for their car- more people would be needed to make these parts- companies would be hiring more staff to fill the needs- the result would be more people with jobs that have money to spend to stimulate the economy.
The government shoulf look into it. ;)

I usually have my "patients" in the bathtub. And i need to get back before they wake up and wonder why their sides hurt.
I don't drive, but I do hate drivers who can't decide what to do. So they'll stop like under me. I'll be walking and they almost ram me. Man that's why i keep the smashing pipe around though.....

i'm thinking a 3-5 ft diameter, probably 10 ft tall. so funeral homes and scrap shops would definitely get stimulated economically.
