the news is good...not slanted as much as i like news to be, but indepth and clearly delivered. i love classical music...that part im not ashamed of. but my favorite thing about it is The Prairie Home Companion, with Garrison Keller. its show done live in front of an audience, has a band with guest musician's from all over the world...and they play mostly crappy hickass sounding stuff with lots of banjo's. but thats not what i like about it.

the main guy has this voice that is so soothing, and he does a bit every week about the news from Lake Wobegon Minnisota....which is his hick ass home town.

but the guy is just a fucking master of the english language, and it makes me happy to hear him every saturday evening from 6-8pm. i always feel like a better person for having heard it.

that said....bring on the faggot jokes. everyone that knows me and has had to put up with it being on when they come over or ride in my car... and thay all make fun of me. except my roommate, cause she has culture an taste.

I was in the hell of doing voice work at an NPR affiliate in NJ.

I was on-air, and had a shift, but I call it voice work, because it's voice tracking.

Voice tracking is done all the time in radio. The host just goes into a studio and pretends that the show is going on.

All computers. You have the program log [the songs, and where the spots belong] and your copy [the spots], and a clock, meaning when do you take a break, when do you front or backsell, etc.

It blows monkey balls. Because it's fake. If I voice track Friday nights show on Tuesday morning [which I was] I can't be specific on the weather, or really anything, besides the fact that it is indeed Friday.

So I left. Seeya!

NPR can be great for some things, and awful for others. At least you get another perspective on things, irrespective of spin and lean.

I did talk radio on a news/talker on the tiniest of stations, and I did it for years, and It kicked ass.

Jeez you guys are really deep thinkers. :p

NPR is lame.
I always thought their listeners were either lonely old men or young adults who want to feel more grown up. Ya know? The same kind of people who sit in the coffee house just hoping someone see's them reading a deep complex novel...

I dont think you really like npr OR classical music.
I think you want people to THINK you like npr.

Its like the same people who say - " I love Jazz"
no you dont.. You think Jazz makes you unique.

Give me green eggs and ham and fart jokes & Brian Baker riffs all night long.

My wife is addicted to NPR. When we were dating I used to listen attentively with her, going so far as attending a live performance of "Prarie Home Companion" at Town Hall in NYC several years ago.

Now that I closed the deal and married her...I'll never listen to that crap again. "Morning Edition" is soooooooo boring.

How can I find out what my local NPR station is in North NJ? Morris County to be exact? Could a dirty Liberal in the north NJ area please tell me the number on the AM dial that it's on.

I need a good laugh.

Can't help you in NJ, but if you want a REALLY good laugh, look for any of the stations on the public-funded Pacifica network. NPR sways to the left, but they're more artsy-fartsy than anything really "news-like" or political.

Pacifica is as pinko as Hannity, Savage, O'Reilly et al are fascists.

I love NPR on the weekends: "Car Talk," "Wait Wait Don't Tell Me," "This American Life." Did anyone catch the Car Talk Christmas show where they did "A Christmas Carol" with Ira Glass from "This American Life" as Tiny Ira, and the rest of the NPR news and radio names as characters? That was fucking hysterical.

and to call my self out even further.... they have two shows featuring abient synth music echo's, and hearts of space. great stuff if you're sipping merlot with some bitch you just made dinner for, just before you throw her naked body down in front of the fire...but dont let your friends catch you listening to it.

not to be confused with throwing her lifless body on to the fire, that comes 5-7 minutes later.

Kudos to anyone who can get so far under Bill O'Reilly's skin.

"Piano Jazz" with Marion McPartland is great!

and PERRYNOID loves that Sunday morning pipe organ show, but he's too chicken to admit it.

NPR is still the most unbiased place to get the news, if only because they don't have to sensationalize the news to increase listenership.

But could they please get someone other than Carl Kasell to read it? I cringe every time I hear him read the hourly headlines in the morning. The phelgm build-up is just too much to take; it's like listening to Spaz of the Future... if Spaz was a commie pinko bastard like yours truly. ;p

As for Prairie Home Companion, I got turned off of that show when Garrison became very unhealthily obsessed with then-governor Ventura.

Can't stand Meeeeeechelle Norris but other than that it is pretty neutral news.I hate hearing the name Latch Me Sing. I have a hard time listening to the soon-to-depart Carl Cassell's slurping old-man mouth.

I give NPR tons of credit for giving their fans what they want.
