Study: Sonar May Cause Bends in Dolphins

LONDON (Reuters) - Sonar may cause a type of decompression sickness in whales and dolphins similar to the "bends" in humans, scientists said on Wednesday.

I guess we should do away with that crazy sonar we use to help protect ourselves and detect our enemies. After all, we wouldn't want to give the poor lil' dolphins tummy aches. The days of our greedy thoughtless acts of defense and safety should come to an end because some goofy oversized insect in the ocean can't handle that goofy sonar.

Jesus Christ...Lighten up, most people know I'm a kidder and those that don't should. Try to comprehend the fact that some people try to do a little light-hearted humor on the board once in a while.

For all those who want to make the ascertion that this board is free of cliques that appear on other boards, well this is a perfect example of how one person can say something and act like it's the most horrible statement in history and someone else can say the same thing and it be taken in the jest it was intended.

Because the issue is relevant to the Navy's desire to deploy very loud low-frequency sonar around the world to detect "quiet" submarines. Also, the Navy is trying to fund and field the new SURTASS-LFA sonar (Surveillance Towed Array Sensor System -- Low Frequency Active). Congress has been mandating that environmental and marine mammal protection concerns be addressed in testing this system.

That's my point. Environmental/cetacean groups have been battling about this issue with the Navy/NMFS for years. Why break the story that LFA sonar is bad now?

Of course they do. However, I have a feeling that the Navy is going to go ahead and do their testing regardless; after all until 1994 they didn't bother to let the NMFS officially know what they were doing or bother to get any permits.

I'm not too current in my info hear, but I seem to recall a few months ago that the NMFS was going to allow the Navy to bypass the MMPA and go ahead and do their testing anyway... I don't quite recall... but still, due to the lack of new developments that I can see, my original comment still stands: Why report this now?
