Looks awful. At least 12 people feared dead, and many injured. Some with limbs missing.

Cause might be high winds?

My building has been creaking all day from the winds.

I flipped off the Yankees to see the crash. The whole side of the boat was take out as if a huge knife had been run down the one side, taking out whatever and whoever was in the way.

Terrible.

I'm waiting to hear what it could have hit to cause so much damage. I can't imagine that is from slamming into a dock.

Ach. I also flipped from the Yankee game to see this, and Moe is right in describing it. I just hope that no one I know or anyone from this board was on the ferry. And from they way it sounded by someone onboard, the driver was a dick and was speeding towards the dock.

Not to sound like a lawyer or anything, but mehcanical failure could account for the speeding boat. Although it does stink of a hot shot pilot trying to make up time on a late day too.

So you're saying that the driver was pulling on the brake but it broke in half like a cartoon?

No, that's just silly. I think we all know what can happen to mechanical devices every now and then.

Actually, maybe this wasn't the right time to joke about the accident with a Bugs Bunny joke.

Terrible tragedy. God bless to all involved or knowing the involved. Sounds awful, lots of lost limbs on top of the death. Sounds like an impossible amount of carnage.

I'm not at all a boat person, I avoid at all costs, but I honestly never felt safer than on the Ferry. Big ass boat, rather docile waters to navigate, so this is doubly shocking to me.

And lets not play boathouse lawyer just yet. I doubt the guy was speeding for any reason, these boats are late all the time. What is quite uncommon is the amount of wind that we're dealing with today. My layman guess would be that the wind's the biggest factor, since there are motors on the boat to propel it to the impact site, but that boat is just a big wind absorbing block, and as anyone who's driven a van or rental truck in high wind can attest to, that big blocky things can get tossed easily in high winds, especially in the gusts we're talking about here(40-45mph)

what I said could be completely false, but there's a chance it is true. Yes, wind could have an effect on any craft, but could wind really send a full sized ferry speeding into a dock?

What I don't get about the wind argument is that this ferry has been running for a long-ass time, and I'm sure it's seen MANY windy days... probably windier than today, but there was never a safety issue before.

I took the 10 am to Staten Island today, and finished early and took the 1 pm back into the city.

I'm not one to wait by the dock to get on the boat though, so I doubt I'd have been hurt.

Either way, I've taken the ferry at least a dozen times in the past few weeks, and I've never felt unsafe on it. Usually about half the boat migrates to the front when the boat it's about to dock, and the majority of those waiting to get on crowd the entrance. It's lucky more people didn't die.

Yep. After all this happened the captain of the ship went home and:

1.) Shot himself in the head with a Bee-Bee gun
2.) Slit his wrists

He's currently in surgery right now. I feel bad for the guy, having to live with all of this.

mehcanical failure could account for the speeding boat.

So could the fact that they power into the dock so they stay in contact, from what i hear from the Port Authority guy im working on a ferry dock with currently.
