Major anti-war rallies in Washington, San Francisco

Organizers predicted more than 30,000 people would turn out in Washington for a march and speeches calling for the withdrawal of U.S. forces from Iraq. Thousands more were expected to flock to San Francisco for the biggest protest there since April, when more than 10,000 people filled the streets.

I was watching coverage of this on C-SPAN (I am that much of a geek), and this has been possibly been the funniest Ani-War Rally yet. The "FUCK BUSH" chant on basic cable had me on the floor in tears. And a bunch of black guys rapping also is at the top of my list.

It's a little late for an anti-war rally, seeing as how the war portion of this process ended several months ago. Now we're kinda just there, working on cleaning up the mess. Withdrawing now would cause the US AND IRAQ more damage than if we stay. It really would be another Vietnam if we left now, because we'd just be going in, making a mess, and then leaving. Ditching Iraq now, this far into things, would be nothing short of a disaster (which is what these people want). It would be a truly irresponsible act if we left before getting the country back in order. If you're at this rally, you are gravely misinformed and I pity you.

I think its more a protest, expressing the general frustration that bush didn't listen to the warnings of anyone against the war, saying that they were unpatriotic, he didn't have a plan beyond blowing things up, and now that the blowing things up part is done, we still have no plan.

We're asking for billions of dollars to fund something that we have no idea how to handle, in a culture that is hostile to ours (and we to theirs, Bush is a born-again christian, which means that anynoe who doesn't belive the same thing as him is going to hell and is beneath his contempt. It's also his divine mission to convert as many as possible, hmm, i wonder why the muslims are upset about this?)

Maybe this is why we're pissed. We want our fucking government back!!!

From an partial insider: Bingo. The "anti-war" people before the war are now an even more diverse group than before. There are groups calling for an immediate pullout, (and I only know of one, but I'm sure there are more). But the ones I know the most about want a number of things that the republicans on the Senate Forerign Relations Committee have been asking for too: #1 a fucking plan of what we're supposed to be doing over there; #2 an international presence to lighten the load on our troops, legitimize the operation in the eyes of the world and the Iraqis themselves, and and to stop attracting Islamic fundamentalists to the all-American presence in Iraq like flies to a picnic and setting the toppling of Iraq as a primary goal of terrorists for the next 30 years; and #3 accountability for the obvious lies that were told to sell this war, so we don't look like a country that just wants to make war on Arab/Muslim countries because we hate them.

I actually hate going to protests and can't bear to listen to most of the speakers at them, but I always meet more people who know why the're there and what they want to see done. That's just not a good story for the press, and isn't the image that pro-war people want to hear.

Exactly. You gotta take the good with the bad, and to dismiss something like this either way isn't very productive.

I'm a born-again christian. Theres a big difference between born-again christians and radical muslim terrorists. We don't go and fly plains into buildings.

There's also a huge difference between Christians, born again or otherwise, and the rest of us. Steps up a ladder...
