View Full Version : What Grades Did You Get???

A teacher with god awful horrible spelling...sounds about right.
A sub-thread? Hey, I can try...
The 'High School vs. College' thread started talking about GPAs. I was wondering what grades you got in school, for as far as you made it.
I was horrific.
1st-4th: all As and Bs
5th grade: something happens and my grades go to some As, Mostly Bs, some Cs
High School: A Trainwreck of A through Fs. My attendance was horrific.
SAT: Math 580 Verbal 560
puts me in the 90%+ percentile back then, but ya know what? I'm not that smart. And most people I know did a lot better.
Or i wasn't sure until I took the NTEs.
You take The National Teacher's Examination as part of the Certification. Two Parts:
General Knowledge: Math, History, English, etc...
Your Subject Area: for me it was Comprehensive Science: Physics, Physical Science, Organismal Biology, Cell Biology, Chemistry, etc...
So I take these things cold.
General Knowledge: 92
Comprehensive Science: 89
Those are percentiles, meaning, for ALL TEACHERS taking the NTE exam with a Masters degree or better [my category] i was just about in the top ten percent.
Great right? NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The test was a JOKE! Meaning, I taught myself this science stuff. I didnt learn shit in school. So, when I took these, I was Not very good at science; and I get these great scores!
And the other teachers around me are failing the fucker left and right! I was KNOWN as the Slacker in the Education Classes I took. They were mostly a joke too. And the Education Dept is all proud of me, and I'm thinking wait! that test had hardly any real math for science! which is good because at that point I sucked ass at it. And I was a B student in the Master's Program.
Top 90%? This is not a backwards gloat. If a real scientist ever called in the show about a subject I was talking about; I'd be put to shame.
Ok; why all of this? I'm reading a book now detailing how bad the teachers are getting. Before this turns into a flame about good and bad teachers and the system, let me say it's the system more then the people. The whole Certification system cant train a person to be a good teacher.
Bottom Line? My guess: There is no good reason for a person with Science Talent to persue the field of public education. Maybe it's as simple as that...
And the certification standards mentioned in the book, as I suspected, are a lot lower then you would imagine.
We were a bunch of idiots.
You??

I did really crappy in high school and then my first year in college.
Then I got into a car wreck because I wasn't paying attention.
I realize for the first time I had attention defecit disorder (no joke, no punchline - I'm about as classic of a case as you can get)
I went to an educational specialist, and I had to re-think and re-learn everything.
After I did that, I was almost on the dean's list my junior and senior year in college.

Me fail english? That's umpossible!
Actually, I excelled at English and was horrible at Math. I graduated High School with a gpa of around 3.0 and a little higher in college. I always knew I could do better if I put a little more work on the books. But I was having a good time and honestly, it's all who you know and a little luck to get a good job that you want.

none here, bor. That reminds me I forgot.
Early On I had CLASSIC Dyslexia. I have in my safe a paper, that yellow 1st grade paper with the big lines for writing. It's an Essay about Neighbors.
Neighbors
I like Neigdors
They are Goob people
They bo not dother each other
I mean the worst. My brother too.
And somehow, someday, beats the fuck out of me. Gone. I drew a lot in class. constantly. maybe that did something. but im ok now. My bro stills reverses once in a while though.
Science is studying this stuff like crazy. Sadly science is still in the 'we're finding out how little we really know' department with a lot of this.
Oh, and any teacher this would ridicule a student's intelligence in front of a class? Out the window. Arrest me.

I'm a sophomore in high school now.
In elementary school I did terrific. In 3rd grade I was asked to join a school program called "Gifted and Talented(GTA)" but I was a couple points on the admission test and didnt make GTA. 6th grade was my last year at my elementary school and I was on the honor roll almost the whole year.
When I got into 7th grade, and changed schools to my towns middle/high school, I just totally lost interest in school. I had a 59 in English after the first marking period, but atleast I finished with a 75. Most all of my grades in 7th grade were poor. 70's in like every class. When I got to 8th grade I had 80's in everything.
My freshman year I got 80's in all my subjects minus Italian 1 and 2, which I got mid-70's in. Oh, and in information processing(a computer course that teaches the "proper" way to type) i got a 56. Thats simply for the fact I didnt hand in like anything the whole year.
After just about 2 months in 10th grade I'm getting a 92 in art, 90 in web design, 95 in gym and.....69 in biology. But fuck science, I hate it. And I'm pissed cause next year when I have to take the HSPA's they are making the science part of the test like a must-pass part. The last 3 years it was only a field test or something. I dont understand it but all I know isI hate science and its gonna be on my HSPA's.

O wow...GTA. I hated that fuckin' thing. There was no point to it at all. The only good thing about it was the fact that you got out of some boring classes to pretty much just sit at a computer for and hour and do nothing. I could live with that.
HSPA is way too hyped up. It's not that hard if you just learn the simple structuring of essays and have a nice idea about math and science and whatever the hell else is on the test. They made it sound like it was gonna be torture, and when you took the test you were like "What the fuck? Where's all this crap I was hearing about?"
O, and I suggest that you try to take your SAT's sometime next year, twice. Because in 2005 they're gonna make you write essays. Sucks for those who have to do that crap.

Mostly B's and A's when I was in High School, math and science were my worst subjects I would get C's in those.
So when I went to college I decided to major in Earth Science forcing me to be good at my two worst subjects, why? cause FUCK THEM!!! thats why

I got a 2.2 my first semester Freshamn year in college. I was devastated.
My dad, who was the coolest dad on the planet, put it into prospective:
"It's not what you get in college, it's what you learn. Right now, you're learning to live with three other women in one room."
My second semester I made a 2.9.
Once I was able to actually choose my roomates, I averaged around 3.2. Not stellar, but I had tough classes.

1st-4th: straight A's, but consistently got "unsatisfactory" in Penmanship.
5th grade: mostly A's & B's, but got an F in Social Studies because I never went to a single class.
6th-11th: A's, B's, & C's
12th: I don't remember; I was more concerned with dating and losing my virginity at that point. All I know is that I graduated.
SAT's 520 math, 600 verbal. Total waste of time, since I ended up leaving college in the middle of my first semester.

Failed Italian 2, got a 69 in english cuz I stink. This year I'm getting all B+ except for english where I'm getting a C+ but I can and will pull those up.

i dont remember what my grades were in high school specifically, but i did fairly well there. it was a specialized high school, so i guess the grades were more competitive than at some other schools.
SAT: math - 800, verbal - 710
in college, my GPA was a 3.672 (i've been sending out resumes, so i know this). i calculated my GPA in my major (applied math), including only the classes that were required for said major, and came up with a 3.919. who needs to read anyway?
i'll tell you who - lawyers. my law school GPA is all right, but not stellar. i know that that's due to the fact that, as much work as i do, i don't put in nearly as much time as i should or that the other students do. it's just not something i'm interested in doing right now.

My life has consistently been a story of me being told that I'm smarter than I believe. Throughout elementry school I got all E's and G's, but always like Satisfactory's in interacting with others (haha)
then 6th grade I kinda realized that i wasn't going to be the model student because I did outstanding in Math (Hudde had a free form Math system where the teacher didn't teach, you taught yourself, so by the end of the year I was doing Math at a 9th grade level) but in Science i consistently was barely failing, getting a 60 third quarter with 80 being passing. However, the test for Hunter College High School was only on writing, math, and reading comprehension so I was able to get in there with 100 out of 150 (93 was passing).
7th-12th grade was spent in HCHS and basically from there I was mediocre. I only did work that I really thought was necessary and therefore my average of around an 85 was probably in the lowest 10% of my school (i was probably 200 out of 230 actually in 8th grade and maybe 160 out of 180 when I graduated). My SAT score was a 690 Math and 620 Verbal the first time I took it, and the second time I got a 640 and 630. And, because my school was so hard, colleges were counting my average as higher and I technically got into Boston U. (my spot in the waiting list had actually come up, but I had already decided on Hunter College) and could've gotten into NYU if I applied probably.
So now I'm in Hunter College's Honors Program, where my full tuition is paid, I get a free room and Apple Powerbook, and I basically have it great. But, I'm supposed to maintain a 3.3 GPA this year (2 semesters) and a 3.5 from then on, so I could be fucked. I figure though, that by the time Hunter is ready to kick me out, my 3.2 GPA or so will look great to another college, and I'll make my father pay for my last two years of college at least. And after college maybe I'll work in a railyard.

In high school I was a usually a Cand B student.
College I stayed around a 3.1 gpa.
In my last semester I only needed 4 more credits to graduate and saw it was cheaper to pay for a full semester of classes and use the schools health insurance than it was to pay for just 2 classes and my insurance myself. So I signed up full time but only really went to the 2 classes I needed.Failed the other 3 with F's. Finisheded with a 1.8 gpa and accademic probation.

EERILY similar here,
4th Grade is when i feel i started to become a full-time daydreamer and all i wanted to do is drawer with my magic markers, i loved all the different bright/pretty colors.
In High School there were several semesters where i made the honor roll and to this day i never remember bringing a book home.
Don't recall ever getting an F but i had some help. The Spanish teacher was a friend of my Moms and she threw me a couple points.
Looking back I feel bad for Moms, she probably got so tired of hearing the word APPLY.

I went to a Catholic grade school and did fair as I went along. My favorite subjects were science and history and art. When I got out and started high school, my parents had me go to an all boy Catholic school. It was right across from the all girls school. I hated it because the girls were right out the window and here I am, a ninth grade hormonally charged kid and Im stuck with all these guys and Brothers who had a green light to beat you if they felt like it (no lie). Anyway, I failed out my first year and ended up going to the public highschool. Now, all my friends that I had gone to grade school where now a grade higher than me because I was left back repeating 9th grade again! It bothered me and I wanted to be with them and I saw that in this school, no one was pushing me. So, I had an option: I could just coast along and be so-so and graduate whenever, or I could pull myself up by my bootstraps and graduate with my friends. So, in 10th grade, I doubled up on English, Science, and Math and jumped from 10th to 12th grade on my own initiative. I still enjoy science and reading and when I use to watch tv, Id always watch the discovery channel and the history channel and today, while talking to my co-worker peers and bring something up, they are like... "Where do you come up with this stuff??" or "How do you know all this stuff??"...The point is, some stuff just sticks in my mind, the rest, is up to the student to desire the learn, and they is what get's you ahead in this world. :8|:

i was a straight A student until i got my first C. my parents were pissed i got a C in 4th grade but everything else was all A's, so i said to myself 'if they get pissed at one C, then why am i killing myself to do all this work and im still getting yelled at?' from that point it was all down hill. a steady diet of a,b, and c's ensued all of grade school. i stopped doing homework i figured: whats the point? i figured i could work just hard enough that i could get into the private highschool i wanted, so i aced the co-op and wasgranted scholarships to molloy and holy cross but i turned them down.
then came highschool: i just didnt care at that point. as long as i did well enough that my parents would still give me money so i could support my habits, i was happy. but i got a 1270 on SATs and that is how i am currently attending college now.
