it was awful. in law school, most of the professors use the socratic method, wherein they just call on people in the class randomly, and then asks them questions. some professors are more scary than others, some ask harder questions than others. anyway, so i get called on today, and the professor starts asking me a series of questions about this case we were discussing. i had read the case, and had taken fairly detailed notes on it in the margins of my book, but i didn't really remember the aspect he was focusing on in my questions. so i was looking in my book, and reading off my notes to answer the questions. then he goes, "you look like you're reading the case for the first time right now." i hadn't even finished saying, "i'm actually just reading my notes," when he was already calling on the next person. i almost started crying right then.

the thing that really bothers me about it all is that i had read the material, and even taken notes. i feel like i was penalized for taking good notes or something. i mean, i guess i should have remembered it, but isn't that the whole point of note taking? you can't remember every detail on everything you read. the whole thing was very upsetting.

some guy in the class came up to me after and said that it was obvious that i wasn't reading from the book, but from notes. another guy came over and was just saying that the professor's an ass or whatever. i was very tempted to go over to him after class and show him that i had read the cases and taken notes, and that i was reading that. but i decided not to, as i didn't want to seem like a big cry baby. now i kind of wish i had, though, because it's still really bothering me.

so, what's the lesson here? that if you take notes on your laptop instead of in your book, then it's ok? that's the only one i can glean from this.

I never stood for that kind of thing. I would have brought it right to his fat face and showed it to him. I don't care about what his reaction would be so much as my own personal joy in standing up for myself. I still do that sort of thing to this day if my boss or someone tries to second guess my work or the results I have no problem standing up and clearing my name.

Oh! I SO know your pain!

My major in college was Soviet Studies (it was the mid 80s and I was a sucker for Sting!). My major was "inter-departemental, meaning I had to take history, socialogy, physics (The Physics of Nuclear Weapons-- awesome class!), and even Theology.

Since I was the lone "Godless" Soviet Studies major, I was under the scrutiny of my Theology professors.

"SOOOOOOOOO, MS. KULEK, HOW would the Soviet government REFUTE what I just stated."

"You furrowed your brow, MS. KULEK, what part of what I said DON'T you agree with?"

I wanted to cry EVERY time!

But after a while I realized he kept calling on me because I wasn't brain dead and just trying to fulfill a requirement.

Randi, luv, I can't imagine the stresses of law school! You really are a super-smart woman. The role of a law school prof (this comes from all my friends who went through law school) is to be a nemesis and challenger.

Hang in there! ALMOST a year and a half down!

I'll treat ya to the next time Peter Murphy tours!

There's no crying in Law School

Wait, maybe that was the wrong Tom Hanks movie.

Your professor probably watches this movie on DVD too often.

That's odd. I don't get much of the socratic method this year. That's probably because I took teachers who aren't too big on it. My bus. org prof practically pats you on the back if you read. I usually don't. I just borrowed some outline from someone who had her last year.

I did get socratized once in another class though. I answered and was wrong on two questions. I really just guessed.

I could care less what my teachers or my classmates think of me now. I'll never see the prof again and if the kids don't know me by now, well fuck em.

Last year, for some reason, that kind of stuff really bothered me. I normally don't care but they really fuck with your head during first year.

Luv,

I've worked with lawyers for eons (publishing). The "professional" authors are arrogant fucks. The law PROFESSORS are out to hurt you. Trust me, I haven't answered my phone OUTRIGHT since a law prof reamed me a new asshole for forgetting his middle initial in his name of a title page of a piss-ass supplement.

Randi,

Take what you need to learn and be a really awesome entertainment lawyer! :-) Enjoy the finer things! :)

The teacher in my favorite class doesn't do socratic method. It's my favorite class because of the subject matter but a big part is that there is no pressure. He actually invites answers from the whole class and we take it upon ourselves to pick up the slack when one of us knows the answer.

I leave the class feeling like I've learned something instead of dodging (or worse taking) the bullet.

Honey, not to be insensitive, but grow a thicker skin.

I've been in law school nearly a year & a half now, and from my personal experience, some of your professors will simply be assholes who will purposefully embarrass you to show you just how little you know of the law.

Honey, not to be insensitive, but grow a thicker skin.before i started law school, my mother was talking to someone whose kid was a lawyer. this woman was telling my mother how i was going to get hardened by the experience, to the point where i might be almost unrecognizable once i graduated. after nearly a year and a half, i feel fairly confident in saying that she was mistaken, at least where i'm concerned.

one of my biggest problems in general, is being far too sensitive. i know that. there's just really very little one can do to "grow a thicker skin." believe me, i'd love it.

Yes, and for some, for good reason.

The Paper Chase above, Won John Houseman an Oscar. And if you read Turow's non-fiction book 'One L'; you see that like, in medical school, there is a sort of 'Kobiashi Maru' thing about these profs, who purposely overload the students; who then must form study groups to survive, and library materials gets stolen, and it can really become a caste system in class.

Some will argue this however, and rightly so; if you are studying say, contractual law [who the fuck knew that the first year is all about frigging contracts and 'consideration']; some will argue that what they are doing is Exactly what the opposing party will do in a courtroom; ever so subtely demand perfection, and since it, or course, isnt possible, they are Never satisfied.

Mind if I ask what courses you are taking now??
Are you One L? two?

Are you One L? two?not at all.. i'm a 2L, like the others.

first year you take (i think it's the same at all schools) contracts, torts, property, constitutional law, criminal law, civil procedure, and legal writing. we also had to take a thing called "elements of law," which was basically worthless.

this semester i'm taking copyright, first amendment, corporations and corporate accounting, and race, ethnicity and the law. and i'm on a journal (which just takes up so, so much time).

boys?

Think they're tough breaking you in at the law school?
Try construction, honey.
The abuse is both physical and mental.

Think they're tough breaking you in at the law school?
Try construction, honey.
The abuse is both physical and mental.while i'm sure that construction work is not easy, i'm certain that no one who has not been through law school can even fathom what law students are put through on a daily basis. it's not "legally blonde." and i've been physically injured from all the shit i have to carry.

and besides, i don't think anyone in their right mind would want me working construction.

Yeah, I didn't mean it to come out that way.
Sorry.
In construction, there is a sadistic hazing process that goes on seemingly forever. It serves in one way to winnow out those who don't really want to make it a career. Plus, you know us guys like that sort of thing in a way.
It can be quite brutal.

No, I wouldn't want you to experience it.

After my last post, I was bothered by what I said because I can understand how you could be hit with what you were hit with by surprise, and how it could be so hurtful.
At another time, it may not have bothered you so.

I hope you not just hang in there, but prevail in the situation.

I can definitely sympathize. This kind of thing really sucks, especially when it isn't warranted.

If it makes you feel better, keep in mind that although this experience was unpleasant, it's over and won't have any lasting effects on anything. Even if your professor holds a grudge against you, it won't matter, because your exams (I presume) are blind graded.

Also, some professors just get off on this crap, so you should try not to take it too personally.

If this ever happens again, just say "hamana-hamana-hamana chef of the future!"

...laughter from the crowd...

BUT SERIOUSLY FOLKS...

Just let this experience motivate you that much more. I can remember being ridiculed by a fat ugly woman in the early days of my career because I didn't know how to do something. That was 15 years ago. Now I have more money than she could ever dream of. But that might not have been the case if I didn't say to myself "fuck that shit, if that fat ugly bitch can do it, so can I."
