While navigating through the usual melasma of bad grammar and spelling, I had a thought: If this message board had a spell check function would anyone use it? Or would laziness and stupidity prevail?

Thoughts?

I've thought about that as well. I think it would be a great idea. Sometimes I wonder how certain words are spelled and I usually open Word to check before I post it.

I usually try to be careful with my spelling and grammer.

Look, I'm an editor and everyone I know likes to point out my typos. Typos are one thing. Outright misspelling is another thing. The best lazyman's spell check? Google. I use it all the time!!!

And "writing as you speak" is great! It can be clear and concise and it will often tell the best stories.

I read some posts and... words... merge and mix... make no sense! Brain! Hurt!

After a long post I will copy and past my text into an AOL E-mail where I conduct the spell check. I then take the final product and move it back to my original post. Takes a few seconds and is quick and efficient.

I go to Google and type in my word. If it's spelled wrong, "Did you mean ________?" will appear in red at the top of the page.

Of course, I'm depending on Google and their quality. But they really are the best search engine around. Like I said, it's the lazy man's spell check.

If you actually want to flip through a book,

the Merriam-Webster 11th edition (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0877798095/qid=1067565975/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/002-5990120-0205628?v=glance&s=books) dictionary is the standard in publishing.

I admit, I'm lazy.

i use <a href="http://www.dictionary.com">dictionary.com</a>. i think the spell check is a good idea, although i know that it wouldn't like my lack of capitalization. i'd use it anyway, though.

You put a spell checker on this site, and we'll have NOTHING TO COMPLAIN ABOUT.

The ONE THING you can bring up sometimes, even if another poster has GOT you, is poor spelling.

If you take that away, posts will decrease by 10%.
