the recent thread about the economy reminded me of this recent Minnie Driver event...

Minnie wanted to work in a Cambodian sweatshop that produced goods for Western companies. She wanted to expose the harsh working conditions and the low earnings. It turns out the Cambodian government felt it was a bad idea which would cause more harm than good.

My first thoughts are:

'what if these workers were successful in uniting and Western companies had to pay benefits and better salaries?"

"What would happen to the companies bottom line and who would it adversely affect the most? the stock price, the executives, the employees in the US?"

i have to imagine that at some point the workers in these 3rd World countries will "unite" one day like workers had united in the US in the early 1900's.

What do you think about Minnie's efforts? are they Positive or Negative?

I think she clearly has good intentions, but her jawline is just too wide and it freaks me out.

Her efforts? Noble, sure, but how many times do we need to be smacked in the face with this issue? I'm not saying it's not horrible, but the people who can do something about it clearly have no intention of doing so, and those that could "lean" *COUGHCOUGHCOUGH* on those who could also seem to have no interest, so her efforts seem to be in vain.

but seriously, if people has a real problem with sweat shops, they would not purchase the goods. in this country, people with lower incomes benefit from the nimble and productive fingers of cambodians. and it's almost a stock answer in these cases, but what would the poor cambodians be doing for income if the dastardly corporate slobs hadn't moved and and capitalized on their piss poor lives? that's life and life sucks- be glad it's not you.

how 'bout this minnie- fight for me to get a living wage where i can support myself and pay for that education that was supposed to pave that highway of opportunity for me? OR HOW BOUT SLOBBING ON MY HAIRY BANANA!?! AH GE GEGE GE... OHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!
