Bush To Announce A Return To The Moon?

"...When President Bush delivers a speech recognizing the centenary of heavier-than-air-powered flight December 17, it is expected that he will proffer a bold vision of renewed space flight, with at its center a return to the moon, perhaps even establishment of a permanent presence there.."

Let's go to Mars instead.

I disagree...at least in the short term. we should establish a moon base and colonize the moon. It would create jobs and expand our economy and boost our scientific/technological discoveries.

When people cite the Apollo Program as 'expensive', they like to point out that it did cost 20 billion dollars for the program. But what these same people failed to realize is that the money didnt just go into a lockbox on the moon. It created jobs and gave us un remitting benefits. The problem for NASA was that they had no long term goals after Apollo. Believe it or not, the shuttle was intended as a short-term project while a new long term goal was drawn up. Unfortunatly, interest lagged with the final Apollo mission (ASTP project in 1975). NASA intended to save Skylab, which incidentally was larger than Mir and could have of been expanded but the shuttle program lagged. And skylab crashed in 1979, giving NASA nothing to work with.

I think Bush has perhaps had someone summarize Gene Kranz and Chris Kraft's books. Because, in these books they both point out the futility in the long run of a space station without a destination to Mars or the Moon. And seeing how these two were former flight directors I find there opinions have merit. I think space needs to have some private enterprizing with NASA playing the 'cop role'. But that is for another debate.

To summarize, I think it is great that we are taking a step in the right direction as far as space exploration goes. I just find it eerie that when Kennedy made the moon the objective after Alan Sheperds 1961 flight, that the US was slowly getting itself involved in a war. And today Bush is making that objective with us involved in a war. Just a lil eerie...

Just think about it!

I mean, last time we went up there and put a flag on the moon and brought back some really kean-o rocks!

Didja see the ones with the little sparkly things in it and stuff?

And we got some bags of "moon sand" too.
How cool is that?
Them Russians gots no moon sand, that's for sure.

And none of them ever hit a golf ball on the moon like one-a are guys did, so there.
And that's why we're number one!

Now I'm gonna go and play "Moon Shadow" by Cat Stevens.

I think it's a good idea. A base could be set up on the moon, which is only a day or two from here. From there we go on to Mars, which takes months to get to from here.

And I agree with Doogie, the money spent on these programs stays here and pays engineers and high end manufacturers', and their employees, who pay taxes here. This won't be farmed out to third world countries.

Just so we can brag about having some boss looking rocks from the moon.

Are you fucking illiterate?? Can you read anything that I wrote before?? The money for those programs get spent in the private sector...the real drain on the economy at that time was the Vietnam War. Yes the Apollo Program was a large budget, the advances far outweighed the expenditures. And we have reaped the benefits of those expenditures ten fold. Dont believe me?? Well think of that every time we make a long distance call for 10 cents a min...just one example. Dont be so ignorant next time and provide some facts!!

I hate astronauts.

They walk around like they're so cool and awesome.

If an astronuat moved to MY neighborhood and tried to date MY daughter, I wouldn't stand for it. Next he'll wanna take my job, and living off welfare and stuff...

And all they drink is Tang, and can't eat any food that hasn't been in a blender. YOU THINK YOU'RE TOO GOOD FOR THIS PLANET?!?! WELL WHY DON'T YOU FUCKING STAY OFF OF IT THE NEXT TIME YOU GO UP THERE!!!

If we never escape from the gravity well we call the earth, we are doomed as a civilization, if not soon due to war or the envoironment, eventually when the sun's fuel begins to run out and we're engulfed. A moon base is a good start, especially with the raw materials (sillica and sunlight - if they find water they're golden).

What worries me is we're so technologically overdesigned, that a lot of our stuff just breaks down too easily. Put the kind of damage that happend to Apollo 13 into a shuttle, and the f-er's doomed.

We need to think simpler, cleaner designes. The shuttle's way overdesigned and has problems. Hell, if we can't make a vcr these days that will last more than 4 or 5 years (not talking about one from 1985, one from TODAY) how the HELL are we going to make something to last decades on the moon?

-EDIT- oh yea and how about boobs in zero gravity? yea baby!

I would not vote for a politician who was against sending space men to the moon and/or anywhere else.

If we get some benefit from it like saving civilization or more cool gadgets...well that's just icing on the cake

By 'our guys' do you mean Lance Bass and the rest of the boy bands that keep coming back every so often? If so then that doesn't seem like a bad idea to me.

It'll be like a big movie with cool special effects and a multi-billion tax dollar budget.
You mean like the Matrix or Toy Story showing what CGI can do in the medium? Were you against the advent of Technicolor too? Do you dislike that Ray Harryhousen for coming up with stop-motion animation? The magic lantern? Stereopticons?

the thing that gets me is the defeatist attitude and "why bother" - if everyone thought that, we'd still be sitting in Europe or Asia somewhere, worried that we'd sail off the end of the earth, or hit sea monsters there. Hell, we'd still be sitting in a cave starving as there were bad things outside.

Where's your sense of adventure? I want my Jetson's flying car dammit and 2001 said we'd be to Jupiter (or was it Saturn - no wait that was the book) by now.

dammit all.
