i have a pretty bad cold, and a few nights ago, i woke up to hear a loud, annoying sound. i thought it was the radio, so i turned it off. that didn't help, as it wasn't the radio. it took me a few minutes to realize that that sound was me... it was this supertastic wheeze-like sound, due to some chest congestion. so i slept sitting up that night, and it was fine. i spend the whole day sitting while i study. i really only get up to walk to the bathroom and back. the lat few nights, i've been continuing the sitting up sleep thing, but it's starting to get annoying. so, last night, i decided to lie down and try again. about 15 seconds later, i could hear it again (less, but still there). so, i slept sitting up last night again.

i just really, really want to lie down... is that so much to ask?

Go to the doctor! Sounds like fluid in the lungs, maybe beginnings of bronchitus, I had the same thing when i had it. Nasty. If you let it go, it could turn intopneumonia! (http://www.reutershealth.com/wellconnected/doc64.html)

I hate that "what's that horrible sound.....oh, it's me" feeling.

I was once in a Navy classroom trying to squeeze in a nap when I was jolted out of my snooze by some incredably loud sound. I hit the guy next to me, assuming he did something like burping in my ear. Wrong - the incredibly loud sound was, of course, me snoring. Oops........

Take care of yourself - take something to loosen up that stuff. Or, try earplugs.

i spoke to the doctor the day after that happened, and she didn't seem particularly concerned. she told me to take something for it, and all that...

Get a different doctor. The reason your having difficulty sleeping laying down is the fluid thats in there is spreading out, drowning your alveoli. When you sit up, more of them are exposed above the fluid so youll be able to get oxygen, your body knows this and thats why you can only sleep sitting up. Get to another doctor, youve heard about the flu thats going around? Influenza's symtoms are just as you describe. Im not trying to scare you, its just for your own benefit.

Influenza's symtoms are just as you describewell, i got my flu shot. also, (drumroll please...) i slept like a normal person last night, and i was fine. so i think everything is under control. yay! and, sr71, i do appreciate your concern and trying to help.

Well, Ari, it seems I have taken your place. I have the nasal drip and end up coughing all night long. The little boy I work 1:1 with and home program for has been VERY sick for quite awhile, and his mother does not bring him to the doctor because he becomes very aggressive and tantrums when there. So while I document his symptoms every single day and fight the administration to actually DO SOMETHING about this scenario (has been going on for years), I am also taking care of his health needs 5 days a week (we don't have a nurse). It goes from washing to blowing nose to being coughed and sneezed on etc. We work in such intense close contact with these children, we tend to get everything that they have, and you can imagine how it snowballs when the fucking parents do not borther to take their child to a god damn doctor (gee you think the administration would follow through on our policies). Anyway, I just got over the fever and pains from the ovary thing and now I have whatever my student has and have to sleep sitting up as well. Wow, did I just vent all of my frustration here?

Oh yes, and furthermore, I doubt there will be a snow day tomorrow, and that pisses me off too.
