Ron and Fez brought up some of the Bad aspects of Christmas, and J-Dubs came in and talked about how much stuff gets stolen, by people, and then Ron asked about employees stealing.

Not sure about this year, but I found a report that said $32.3 Billion lost in 2000.

From The Article:

"Given that the surveyed portion of the retail economy annually transacts over $1.845 trillion dollars, this percentage of loss is worth over $32 billion," Hollinger said. "This means that the single largest category of larceny in the United States is the crime that occurs in retail stores. This figure is larger than motor vehicle theft, bank robbery or household burglary combined."

Oh, and I forgot to ask for any personal stories. Me and my friends stole like banshee's when young. Mostly music stores, stealing records, sheet music, guitar strings, microphones, all the good shit. No pianos. I was lucky; never caught bad enough that it got home.

Most real businesses are fully aware that items will be stolen and plan for it in the finances and the quantity ordered. It's just something you have to accept. My store makes about $9 million a year and even with that the front office has decided the amount we lose to theft (Shrinkage, loss, etc.) is outweighed by the cost of having a fulltime security staff. Our target shrink rate is below %1.5. We hover around %1.1.
