Once again the FCC (headed by the worthless and weak Michael Powell) has rewarded Rupert Murdoch for his good PR for President Bush, by giving him DirectTV. By the time anyone really realizes the mess he and his term has done, he will be out of the government and working on the board of one of Rupert's companies.

I'm parphrasing and agreeing with a good rant on it at DCRTV (http://www.dcrtv.com).

Echostar, who originally had the deal to buy DirecTV.

Ah, another one of these "conservatives REALLY run the media!" posts.

Look, this is a bad idea with Direct TV, but we will NEVER reach a day when one or two entities own all of the media. Never. There's already too many different diverse sources of information out there for that to happen.

How come people always bitch about whar Murdoch does, though? I don't see this same anger whenever Viacom / CBS / Infinity gobbles up another station or network.

So you're OK with the NRA buying a radio station to get around the McCain-Feingold campaign financing law?

By the way, I am too. I'm a super-Life member of the NRA. And I think the campaign finance law is BS, and that the Supreme Court were pussies for upholding it 5-4.

Did you read the link to the DCRTV rant?

"who's to stop cable giant Comcast from buying Disney/ABC? Or Viacom/CBS from nabbing up Time Warner? You and me will soon be paying for 'Powell's folly' with skyrocking cable and satellite bills. And there will be far fewer 'voices.'"

Yes, DCRTV does have a more pointed axe to grind with Murdoch, though, but he has also been consistantly critical of the others as well.

As far as I'm concerned, I was simply echoing his comments - no anger or outrage on my part, because it's what I have come to expect from the FCC under Michael Powell, and (like Dave at DCRTV said) I can't blame Murdoch for taking as much advantage as he's able.

I just found it interesting that this story is out there, yet it's impossible to find mentioned anywhere. It seems obvious to me that the FCC does not look out for the public interest whatsoever.

I also wanted to see what anyone else thought about it.

Friday Murdoch buys DirecTV, and today an earthquake is centered at Hearst castle. I can taste the irony.

by giving him DirectTV

I didn't know it was the FCC's to give.

Echostar had a deal to buy DirecTV. Murdoch enacted a huge lobbying effort to block the deal. The FCC blocked the Echostar deal on the grounds of creating a monopoly. Murdoch moves ahead and buys DirecTV. Despite concerns of a different kind of monopoly, the FCC approves the deal.

There is at least the appearance of impropriety here.

I wasn't talking about DCRTV in particular.

It's just that whenever a situation like this arises, the kneejerk reaction is OMG DICK MURDOCH~!

I see that the role of Haliburton remains hidden....

Hey, I heard a rumor that Dick Cheney used to run Halliburton.

Could it possibly be true?!?!?!?!

Nah, it's easy to find, on all of the Conservative websites.

Don't even get me going on Boeing - I have family who work there in Wichita, and you really don't want to get into a Left Vs. Right pissing match with Boeing as a battle ground (which may be why the story hasn't had as much play as you would like - something a-kin to people in glass houses...)

They all suck. They are all up to no good. You can almost count on two hands the number of people on Capital Hill and the White House who are decent, and it's pretty evenly split between the two parties.

Sort of like having a knee jerk reaction to when anyone says anything remotely critical of the administration, is to start off posts with a dismissive "Oh, not that old blah-blah-blah again...?"

KOP is right. The administration has been scandalously trying to ram through this tanker deal with Boeing where the taxpayers have to pay more than they should to lease tankers.
That deal alone will reap for Boeing a very nice profit from it's investment in the Republican Party.
