To the moon and even mars (http://dailynews.att.net/cgi-bin/news?e=pub&dt=040109&cat=news&st=newsbushspacedc)

Does anybody think this is really necessary?

I like the idea. We gotta do something with those two masses of space. And we better get our asses going with setting up residence on the moon or Mars, cause we aint gonna be able to suck the juice out of much more of this Earth.

It may not be necessary, but it's cool. So why complain?

If anything, it will shut up the "we never landed on the moon" conspiracy.

We have to return to the moon, we have to go to Mars. All for the advancement of the human race. Plus, we have to clean up the base on the dark side of the moon. It's really dusty now, just a mess.

that's one reason. another is tat the moon is a much needed jumping off point to Mars and beyond.

It won't help the worsening allready record debt this country is in.
This is not the time to go spending more money on extravagances.
For less than half of what it would cost to go get some cool rocks from Mars, we could have national health care.

Great point. How the Universities and get away with charging you vastly inflated prices for books after cleaning you out on tuition, and maybe room and board.

Increase the god damned price up front, but my [imaginary] kid better have free books and a computer when i pay $4.6 Billion a year in tuition in 2012.

And that 'sell your books back' you ever seen such a racket? Who invented that? Tony Soprano?

'Sorry; there's a new edition, we aren't buying this book anymore.'

'Or; ok that's $425 dollars that you paid in September for these, it now May, here's $50 for the stack.'

Bite me.

Naw, man.
The trap was in at first saying that we could have national health care for what it would cost to go to Mars. That was the bait.
Then I sat back, kneading my hands like Snidely Whiplash, just a-waiting for a conservative to bite.
And there you were with that "some of us don't want national health care".
Then I followed with "Bush does! For Iraq, springing the trap, expecting hilarity to ensue.
The punch line being the contrast between us paying for and providing free national health care for the Iraqis while refusing it for U.S. citizens, when after all, if we can afford to go to Mars, we can afford to give all Americans national health care.

This is the part where you laugh.

Only now you don't because, DAMMIT! you took all the fun out of it.

Well Furie, I hope you're satisfied.

National healthcare would be an absolute disaster. Have you been to Canada lately? Taxes are so far out of control, and they can't find a way to stop the bleeding. This could be a worse fiasco then what social security has become. How about we take the "moon money" and pay down that ridiculous defecit we now have. That, in turn will re-stimulate the economy, employment and retail sales.

Scap the space station
Fuck the moon
And let's get Iraq mopped up and get the hell out of there.

Most in the scientific community feel that the Moon is a springboard to landing a man on Mars. we have to get our feet wet again to get use to it and to hang out there for a while if we are to send people there. As to wether we can get the same information remotely by robotic exploration is another issue needing debate. Most agree that its a very risky proposition to send people that far away. The human spirit get more of a boost if we as a people see our own people accomplishing something of this magnitude and it would be a great ego boost to us, but to me, with the current climate with NASA and the economy, I think it might be better to do the safe thing and explore remotely until we have the economic savings to afford it, because if we send men there and they crash into the planet, its going to set back the space program and be a real downer.
