View Full Version : O'Neill "Stockmans" Bush

Oh, man! Few things can warm me up on a cold winter's night like a nice, internecine battle between Republicans. Paul O'Neill apparently has decided to 'fess up about his experiences in the Bush Administration in his new book which, tellingly, is coming out before the election.
My favorite quip so far
"(Bush in cabinet meetings was) like a blind man in a roomful of deaf people" (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A4715-2004Jan9.html)
but the most serious charge seems to be
Report: Bush planned Iraq invasion before 9/11 (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/3925358/)
Obviously, it is too early to know if this charge is true and, if it is, whether enough of us sheep will care, but if it is I think a lot of the current "wisdom" about a second Bush term being inevitable might start looking a li'l shaky.

I thought the whole notion of "Fortress America" indicated an invasion of Iraq was in the cards even before Bush took office...

Surprising 'revelations' just before a book is published isn't republicans battling, it's PR. Who's battling, again?
As to the most serious 'charge'? I will re-visit this thread in a week to see how the charges are holding up. This is a surprise?

"There are memos," Suskind told CBS. "One of them marked 'secret' says 'Plan for Post-Saddam Iraq."'
I guess O'Neill took the only copy of that memo.

President Bush: Haven't we already given money to rich people (http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2004/01/09/60minutes/printable592330.shtml)
Suskind also writes about a White House meeting in which he says the president seems to be wavering about going forward with his second round of tax cuts. "Haven't we already given money to rich people ... Shouldn't we be giving money to the middle," Suskind says the president uttered, according to a nearly verbatim transcript of an Economic Team meeting he says he obtained from someone at the meeting.
Look, he's the one saying it! Not me, HIM!

The long term negative effects of this to the President will be zero. Right now, everybody is concentrating on the Democrat's primaries.

I can't recall where, but I'm about 95% sure I saw where, before Bush was elected, Wolfowitz and/or Perle published for some think tank a paper calling for the invasion of Iraq.
It set forth a strategic vision and that was one element in it.

whatever happened to the 'battle between republicans'?
Jeez, don't I get any slack for poetic license? I didn't mean to imply there would be actual gunfire. ;)
To me, having a high-ranking official in a Presidential administration lend his name and efforts to a book slamming his former boss BEFORE a re-election campaign is newsworthy because it is so rare. Ordinarily, with politics played at that level. the books, backchat, etc. usually come out after the President leaves office or at the earliest when he is in the lame duck phase of the 2nd term. To me, this is clearly an attempt to influence public opinion before the election. If Michael Moore/Al Franken/Anne Coulter et al. try to do this it isn't really a surprise. To have someone of O'Neill's stature do it is.
I understand the PR formula for selling books. It is the player that makes this interesting to me, not the game.
Once I actually read the whole thing, I'll post my $0.02 here for consideration.

Recyclerz,
It's a fine post, and absolutely true as to the issue mentioned.
I think the problem is that this kind of story gets a passing glance by both parties. The Reps aren't gonna touch it as long as things are as they as [Bush in office], and the Dems are busy trying to get someone on the ticket against Bush. Sadly, that last Dem debate seemed more about what was wrong with Dean, not Bush.
I honestly have no idea who will be on the Card Vs. Bush in November. Dean is getting hammered, pure and simple; it's his turn in the barrel. Will he survive? Beats me, but that's what's making the headlines.
This is why I longer watch TV news.

I think that was the "Fortress America" thingamabobber...
I used to have a rilly neato Fort Apache set with plastic stockades complete with a gate and a blockhouse.
There was lost of plastic cavalry figures and injuns, some of which were in a running pose, tomohawk in one hand and scalp in another.
Sadly, there were no white women, quivering with fear or nervous anticipation at what would happen to them if the soldiers lost....

Doubtful, since Stockman has now stated he:
-'wishes he could take back' unflattering comments he said about Bush.
-Never looked at the documents given to him; he handed them, never looking at them [his words], to a reporter.
Like I said, a pitch in the dirt; and no one swung. Now lies the ball, labeled 'secret', and Stockman is running away from any associations with these documents, that he admits he indeed had them [on two CD-Roms, his words], and handed them to susskind.
Update Here (http://money.cnn.com/2004/01/13/news/economy/oneill/index.htm?cnn=yes)

Fair is fair alike.
If there's even the hint that he's got some documents that are sensitive or at least shouldn't be in his possession - there should be some amount of investigation going on.

They both should be investigated. We can't allow the passing of classified documents to be openly accepted. However, it took months to start an investigation of the CIA leak, and less than a day for this one. That isn't a coincedence.
And, if we are going to judge solely on what information has been revealed so far from these documents, there has been nothing that threatens national security. Doesn't mean there shoudln't be an investigation though.

It's painfully clear O'Neil leaked documents classified at LEAST at the "secret" level.
Thanks a lot, dipshit.
