She doesn't do appearances with him, she is rarely seen in public with him and has said publicly that she does not want to get involved in the political process, preferring to remain a doctor in Vermont.

Is America ready for a First Lady who doesn't want to be First Lady? Is America able to abandon the concept of a full-time First Lady? Is she right? Is she wrong? Will her stance ultimately help or hurt her husband's campaign.

Or is she just so ugly that Dean doesn't want her to see the light of day? Thoughts?

Why would we need one? Seems like all the other ones have to give up legitimate careers (If they had them) for what amounts to a glorified PR-job.

I'm glad the media is covering the issues that REALLY matter in the campaign this year, like this issue and Wesley Clark's sweaters.

Though I am not a big fan of Dean, I don't think it makes any difference to us voters.
It hinders the Dean campaign somewhat, because they can't send her to campaign functions that he can't make.

I honestly feel that this is going to hurt him somewhat in Middle America and the South. I can see some sort of "does she think she is better than us" backlash popping up.

I see a "60 Minutes" interview with the Deans that's going to stir up a 100x more controversy than Hillary's "Tammy Wynette" comment.

I think that the people that this would matter to wouldn't be voting for him anyway.

I'm not voting for her. I say leave her alone, she's got more important things to do than wading into the endless political attacks that she would endure, like fixing cow-tipping injuries.

Seeing as the previous administration had a first lady who was far more visible than I would have ever wanted her to be, I got no problem if she wants to stay in the background.

Wesley Clark's sweaters.

But he looks just so adorable in them. They make me want to sit on his knee with my head on his shoulder while he beguiles me with tales of his miitary heroism.

doesn't matter. Bush inc. will be there for another 4 years. but to answer your question, good for her she has her own things to do. maybe she saw what linda tripp went through, no matter how much of a bitch she may have been, being thrust into the public limelight just showed how god damn vicious people can be to the cosmetically challenged.

She don't want to get involved?

No problem here; he wants what he wants, she wants what she wants; no worries.

A refreshingly honest lady; she seems to dislike all the fancy-schmancy stuff like dances and being 'Mrs. Governor' and stuff and have her own career.

I'm betting many first ladies in the past didn't really care about the whole thing. I wouldn't want the publicity and celebrity and photogs up my ass and every word scrutinized; not in 1000 years...

How did this first lady thing get started, Ron is 100% correct on this issue. No other job has "The Wife" or "The Husband" involved in the spouses work unless they actually got a job there as well.

I'd vote for a woman president, and have no problem with women in possitions of power. But any time I see the first lady doing something and people taking her seriously I get sick. Her husband was elected, not her.

Now The spouse can matter in the election process. But it should be the same for any person related to that canidate. If Dean has a crackhead for a brother, then yes, it may be an issue.

I think it's refreashing that she doesn't want to get involved. Unless she's lieing, then she is happy being a doctor and isn't looking for a power trip (Hillary) That says something about Dean.

Here's a quote from Dean's wife from an interview this last fall:

"'I think a lot of couples are like us, where they have two career-couples, and both careers are very important to the individuals. Each individual has to do what works for her. What works best for me, and what I'm best at, is being a doctor.' ...

From the Post, quoting the Times: "As first lady of Vermont, Dr. Steinberg reluctantly danced through the first two inaugural balls, in 1993 and 1995, but that event was soon cut from the state capital calendar and replaced with an open house, which she skipped."

Good for her!

I am so fed up with the White House Royal Families - the Clintons, the Bushes, the Reagans and the Kennedys. THIS could be an excellent change.

Yeah, but Dubya has been famous for avoiding state dinners (there have only been 4) and other formal occasions. He and Mrs. Bush prefer small gatherings. Conversely, the Clintons seemed to have huge events every other week.

I'm far less concerned about the state dinners, which actually connect the President and his family with some people outside of the inner circles, but the whole entitlement to the White House because your family once lived there.
