View Full Version : I like The Darkness

I know I'm not supposed to like The Darkness, but "I Believe in a Thing Called Love" is so damn catchy. Plus the video is insane in it's total awesomeness.

I'm going out and buying the album today.

I also like Britney Spears' "Toxic".

I sometimes hate the part of my brain that decides that I like music even though it's uncool to like it for my demographic.

Similar Artists: Ten Benson, Tenacious D, Ween, Andrew W.K.

Roots and Influences: Queen, Judas Priest, Kiss, Mott the Hoople, Led Zeppelin, The New York Dolls, Thin Lizzy

Hmm. This makes me think I should like them. The Ween and Tenacious D comparison makes me think they are borderline a joke? The Judas Priest, Kiss and Thin Lizzy comparison makes me think they are Sum 41 jr.?

The Darkness, in a Nutshell:

Queen crossed with 80's Hair Metal with a huge, huge, HUGE dose of Spinal Tap.

The video is fucking AWESOME.

Lots of Queen influence in the Darkness. I read that the three other members of the band met the lead singer while the lead singer was singing Queen songs on karaoke.

For kinda guilty pleasures like this, do you ever find yourself ordering albums off of Amazon because you don't want the people at your local record store knowing you dig them? I sure do.

Can anything really compare to the autobiographical song "Growing On Me"?

Of course, The Darkness also get the award for best use of the word "extracurricular" in a song.

And Darkness describe themselves as "a straight Queen."

Joke band that's now being taking seriously, by smug British fans that want to lord over Americans that they "get" our cock rock from the 80's, which is apparently superior to being "ironic" even though it's the same fucking thing, and the band themselves, even though they're all probably 236 years old combined and retarded.

I like fun. I like funny. Electric Six put out one of my favorite albums last year. But for some reason the Darkness make me want to curl into a ball and explode with rage and horror.

And you know my friend we HAVE to go. I will come down there and join you. I need the other Darkness fan other than myself with me when I see them.

Parody? I seriously don't care what you want to call it I just want some fun riffing rock and roll right now. Take your depresso nu metal and your synthesized redos of every song Chester and get out of my fucking way. Stop taking yourselfs so friggin seriously and stop redoing all of your same sounding #1 hits and come up with something useful.

Rock needs to be fun again.

Dude, they're a bunch of hippies.

No, even worse...FAKE hippies.

GAY fake hippies.

"I believe in a thing called love"? How much more pinko-pansy-bleeding heart could anyone get?!?

You're Se7en, goddammit. STAND UP FOR YOUR PRINCIPLES!

The Darkness are good at what they do. Unfortunately, what they do is a glammed-up version of 80's American hair-metal. Please, someone forward me the memo when that shit was going to be allowed into the fucking club again, because I'm not buying it for a second.

Queen comparisons? Freddy Mercury is probably doing the French Twist in his deliciously gaudy coffin as we speak. Just because some Brit poofter sounds like he got his nads caught in his bike spokes doesn't make him anywhere even CLOSE to one of, if not THE, greatest rock vocalist of all time.

As legitimate music? It's woefully middle of the road. Which is fine, because I listen to tons of mundane, "safe" bands. But these guys are getting propped up by their fans, the press and now themselves as the nu-saviors of "rock." I hate shit like that when it's with bands I LIKE. Fuck them.

As a joke band? Where's the fucking punchline?

The above is why *I* don't like this band. As to why anyone else would want someone to piss in their ears, I could give a great, gooey fuck.

Agreed. First album, good. Second album, not so good.

And Randi, considering that Justin Hawkins is a soprano and RIC Ocasek's voice is more in the bass range, I seriously have to question if you are correctly identifiying who Ocasek is.

Ric Ocasek = Lead singer of the Cars. As in "You Might Think" and "Shake It Up". He did NOT sing lead on "Drive" though.

I can't even REMEMBER the last time I've heard a male soprano in rock music.

The Ultimate Hair Metal Music Video:

Britny Fox's "Girlschool".

Followed closely by Sam Kinison's "Wild Thing". Which lead to an indentation on my extremely impressionable teen mind.

Ok, what the hell and maybe I shoul dhave joined the Fan Club...

Fan club members got the special privledge of purchasing tickets to their upcoming US Tour BEFORE the public. Maybe I should have even paid more attention casue I knew they were coming for a few months now.

Well, as a result, the entire tour is for the most part Sold Out. I asked at the TLA in Philly yesterday about tickets and they went on sale 2 weeks ago and apparently things are being very tight lipped about availability and the record label wants there to be that huge demand and big word of selling out shows to garner more interest. Pairs are going for upwards of $130 through Ticket Brokers and eBay.

I am bummed to say the least. Hell, I don't even know of anyone else (besdies DC Reed) who really likes them. DC is even Sold Out and there is no NYC show either. Damnit!!!!

Me and my friend were talking a couple of weeks ago about what band will save rock and make it cool again (i mean to everyone, certaintly rock has been given up on by a lot of people). The Darkness' video came on, and we only thought for a second that they could be that band. But the thing is.......they're just a joke really. I listen to their album like I listen to Tenacious D's album and Fozzy's album (wrestler Chris Jericho's band).

I like the music, but no one should go ahead and start talking about them like they will ever be able to be a real band. It's schtick. They're good, but not good enough to shake that label. Just look at the bassist. That's not the face of a man that even he himself can take seriously.

As I have been wrong on so many other things, I disagree that they are merely a joke. Ok, I am a pretty huge fan. I just think of it as more of a throwback to the fun rock and roll from the late 70's like Queen, Thin Lizzy and maybe even the style (if you could call it that) from the New York Dolls. I can see how they could be perceived as a joke though. I thought that's what they were all about when they first came to the surface.
