They joked about it last night on Tough Crowd. Is there any tape of him actually doing it? Id love to see Al Franken acting tough.

Aren't you a law student? You don't have the right to shout someone down. Unless they're liberal in your book though, right?

Bingo. Didn't Al shout down O'Reilly at that book convention even after Al already had his time? Here's another quote I like:
"I would have done it if he was a Dean supporter at a Kerry rally," he said.
But would you have done it if he was a Dean supporter at a Bush rally?

If I was the guy, I would be looking for a good lawyer right now.

Nobody's "rights" were violated here. Franken has just as much right in shutting the guy up as the protestor has in peotesting in the first place. It's just that Franken's previous comments make him seem like a big, fat hypocrite.

They were both interrupting each other at that thing, and they were both invited speakers, so that was an argument, not shouting down.

They guy probably has a case against Al for physically assaulting him. Assuming that the NYPost actually reported this story right.

Nobody's rights were violated!? I am pretty sure the guy has the right to voice dissent with a candidate without getting his ass kicked!

Franken had the 'right' to shut him up by bodyslamming (The Post's word) him?!? Who the hell does he think he is?

Nope.

The right to free speech applies to the GOVERNMENT hindering a private citizen's right to free and public expression.

This is one private citizen jumping another private citizen. Sounds like it's probably a CRIMINAL issue. But let's cut the shit with his "right to free speech" being denied.

That said, the guy came into what is legally a private gathering. His right to be shut up, tossed down or tossed out is just as relevant as his right to protest. Franken just picked the wrong way to do it, and he's probably going to pay for it. Literally.

CNN has a different take on it:

As Dean was addressing a crowd in Manchester, the fans of LaRouche -- who is something of an outcast in the Democratic Party for his extremist views -- began screaming that Dean is "a liar" and not a Democrat. They said the only candidates telling the truth are LaRouche and Sen. John Kerry, the apparent front-runner in the race.

The crowd began cheering "Howard Dean, Howard Dean," drowning out the LaRouche supporters as they were removed from the room.

Franken, a comedian and self-described liberal well-known for his attacks on the Bush administration and conservative-leaning media, helped carry out one of the disrupters. In the process, Franken's glasses were knocked off his face and broke in two.

Without a doubt, but I never said his 'right to free speech' was violated. I just think that a person has a right to be an asshole with words without being physically assaulted. I, along with half this board would get their ass kicked on a daily basis if that wasn't the case.

I apologize however. I should have realized from all of the posts that 'rights' was in the context of 'free speech'.

Hey more straight and narrow reporting from the Communist News Network.

Joking obviously. I wasn't there and I don't know how it went down. But everything I heard and read before the CNN report told the 'attacking' Franken story.

http://www.theunionleader.com/articles_showa.html?article=32449

"All of a sudden, I looked to my right, and Al Franken was grabbing onto this man's back," Ramsey said.

"He (Franken) gave him a hefty Patriots block. He should be a Patriot," Ramsey said.

"I never met Al Franken before. He is now my new hero," Ramsey said of the former "Saturday Night Live" writer.

Ramsey said a news photographer later told him Franken reacted to being elbowed by the protester, who knocked his glasses off.

...

Franken told the New York Post he body-slammed the demonstrator to the ground.

"I got down low and took his legs out," Franken told the newspaper.

Franken said he is not backing Dean, but merely wanted to protect free-speech rights.

"I would have done it if he was a Dean supporter at a Kerry rally," he told the Post.
