View Full Version : [Plame] Cheney's office in trouble

Remember Valerie Plame? You know, the undercover CIA agent working internationally in the field of weapons of mass destruction, whose identity was revealed by one or more traitors in the White House, in violation of federal law?
Well, apparently the investigation into the matter is progressing, and things aren't looking too good for ol' Dick Cheney and his staff.
http://www.insightmag.com/news/2004/02/17/National/Cheneys.Staff.Focus.Of.Probe-598606.shtml
Federal law-enforcement officials said that they have developed hard evidence of possible criminal misconduct by two employees of Vice President Dick Cheney's office related to the unlawful exposure of a CIA officer's identity last year. The investigation, which is continuing, could lead to indictments, a Justice Department official said.
According to these sources, John Hannah and Cheney's chief of staff, Lewis "Scooter" Libby, were the two Cheney employees. "We believe that Hannah was the major player in this," one federal law-enforcement officer said. Calls to the vice president's office were not returned, nor did Hannah and Libby return calls.
The strategy of the FBI is to make clear to Hannah "that he faces a real possibility of doing jail time" as a way to pressure him to name superiors, one federal law-enforcement official said.
So, who had Libby in the pool?

Jury Said to Hear Evidence in C.I.A. Leak
by Eric Lichtblau and David Johnston
WASHINGTON - A special prosecutor has begun presenting evidence to a grand jury about the improper disclosure of an undercover C.I.A. officer's identity and has advised several people who have been employed at the White House that they could be summoned to testify, senior officials said on Friday.
The prosecutor, Patrick J. Fitzgerald, began submitting evidence this week to a grand jury at the federal courthouse here. It was not immediately clear who faced subpoenas. At least some White House employees have been asked to meet informally with the prosecutor in what appeared to be a possible effort to obtain voluntary admissions of wrongdoing in exchange for offers of immunity, the officials said.
Mr. Fitzgerald's decision to use a criminal grand jury, first reported by Time magazine on its Web site, www.time.com, was not unexpected, but it did ratchet up the seriousness of the criminal inquiry, raising a possibility of courthouse appearances by Bush administration officials compelled to testify under oath.
Mr. Fitzgerald has been pushing to obtain the cooperation of witnesses close to the White House who might otherwise be subpoenaed to testify before the grand jury, officials said. Such a tactic is routine in criminal cases. It often results in agreements in the form of immunity pledges or plea deals that can provide prosecutors with additional evidence to use against other suspects.
Law enforcement officials said few details were known about the status of the case, because Mr. Fitzgerald had operated in secrecy, remaining United States attorney in Chicago. At times, he has refused to tell associates when he would arrive in Washington. As a result, it was not clear who at the White House had been invited to meet Mr. Fitzgerald. Nor was it clear how many were current or former employees, although the list does include relatively high-level staff members, the officials said. A spokesman for Mr. Fitzgerald declined to discuss the case.
The Justice Department named Mr. Fitzgerald last month to lead the investigation after Attorney General John Ashcroft withdrew amid concerns about the appearance of a conflict. Mr. Fitzgerald is a veteran prosecutor known for aggressiveness and persistence, and he has extensive experience in using grand juries to obtain indictments in difficult terrorism cases like those he managed in the 1990's in New York.
Mr. Fitzgerald's use of the grand jury could prove awkward for the White House, which has sought to control the damage over accusations that unidentified administration officials leaked the name of the C.I.A. operative, Valerie Plame, in retaliation for her husband's public criticism of President Bush's policies on Iraq last summer. This week, a group of former intelligence officers pressed Congressional leaders to open a separate review into the case because they were concerned that the Justice Department was not moving quickly enough.
Joseph C. Wilson IV, the former ambassador who is married to Ms. Plame, said on Friday that neither he nor his wife had been subpoenaed for the grand jury.
"If it's useful for them to have me there," Mr. Wilson said, "I'm happy to do it, but I really have no idea what to expect."
His lawyer, Christopher Wolf, said he was unaware of the grand jury proceedings, but that "the investigation seems to have been lagging, so this has to be seen as a positive development."
Senator Charles E. Schumer, the New York Democrat who has led the calls for an aggressive investigation, said the report on the grand jury suggested that investigators might be zeroing in on suspects.
"Inevitably," Mr. Schumer said, "you don't convene a grand jury unless there's something serious."
White House officials refused to discuss any grand jury developments or whether employees had been contacted or subpoenaed, but they affir

Doomstone - learn to disagree with someone without being a prick about it, or you won't find yourself welcome here.
If any of you think this problem is limited to Doomstone, or is limited to those posters with a particular political leaning, you're dead wrong. You would think that presumed adults could discuss issues that they disagree on without getting personal or being nasty.
This shit has to stop.

You can't possibly be this dense. You don't have to be a positive poster. You can point out when you don't agree with someone or when someone is incorrect. You can provide support for the reasons you disagree or evidentiary support for the reason that person is wrong. You can also do it without being an ass-crack.

Absolutely. It was a message from the White House to anyone who might consider publicly calling them out on their lies, that they would not hesitate to endanger their families in retaliation. It really tells a lot about the mindset of those in the administration, the fact that they'd be willing to violate federal law and compromise national security in order to silence their critics. Unfortunately, some people are so blinded by partisan loyalty that they find such behavior acceptable.

But at the same time, we can't fall back on that line of thinking when something as big and as potentially tragic as the conflict in Iraq and our international standing is at so much risk.
Along another line, I'm far from convinced of the overly malicious accusations from people who seem to have already determined Bush and Co. are guilty of everything one could possibly think of. I think Vietnam IS the best parallel, at least in terms of how we got wrapped up in it in the first place...mistakes. Poor judgement. Mis-estimation. Look at the history of Vietnam, how its history of conflict stretched over several administrations before it finally came to a head...monstrously. We're seeing a similar pattern here with Iraq and how we came to this mess in the first place and how the decisions have been made.
I'll reserve my judgement until we know more.
Until then, I say everyone takes a quick primer in the Vietnam build up under Johnson, and the very blatant comparisons to what has happened under Bush with Iraq.

So are you saying it's perfectly ok for senior White House officials to compromise national security and leak the name of an undercover CIA operative, in violation of federal law, because "every politician lies?"
George H. W. Bush, 41st President of the United States, once said that he "has nothing but contempt and anger for those who betray the trust by exposing the name of our [intelligence] sources. They are, in my view, the most insidious, of traitors."
I guess maybe someone should have told him then that "every politician lies," huh?

If I did, I'm sure the FBI would be interested in hearing about it. What we do know is that someone did, in fact, commit a crime by giving her up, that Bob Novak attributed the information to senior White House officials, and that the investigation is centered around John Hannah and Scooter Libby, certainly not good news for the Vice President or anyone else who might be involved.
Something else of interest, from the Washington Post (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A26979-2004Feb9.html):
A parallel FBI investigation into the apparent forgery of documents suggesting that Iraq attempted to buy yellowcake uranium from Niger is "at a critical stage," according to a senior law enforcement official who declined to elaborate. That probe, conducted by FBI counterintelligence agents, was launched last spring after U.N. officials pronounced the documents crude forgeries.

The only thing that we know is that two senior officials confirmed that Wilson was recommended by his wife. We don't know that the "senior officials" named her as a CIA operative.

I'm somewhat touched at the concern over my feelings, but really, it was nothing. I think we've realized that and moved on.
But how do YOU know I wasn't joking, Yerdaddy? ;p
BTW, are you going to PM me back? What I wrote you wasn't really rhetorical.

Appeals Court Rules Against Reporters in CIA Leak Case (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,147669,00.html)
Admittedly, I'm just a sore loser, but I really hope somebody, other than the reporters, goes to jail for this leak.

Until then, I say everyone takes a quick primer in the Vietnam build up under Johnson, and the very blatant comparisons to what has happened under Bush with Iraq.
Path to War rocked.
Johnson was man enough to acknowledge his mistake and not run again though. Bush's administration took their PHENOMENAL mistakes and ran on them.
Seven is right about no one caring. All the evidence is right in everyone's face about not only the Plame situation, but the WMD's that never surfaced, Osama still missing, the 911 commission reports and recently release FCC warnings on Al Queada, and still people think that the Bush administration is actually working on the war on terror.

Rove run campaigns have been associated with some questionable practices. Some would call them non-Christian, or rat fucking, or illegal. Also, the way he has served as a political advisor is to be a divider not a uniter, while saying the opposite. No matter your politcal leanings, you have to say that Rove's style is crappy.
Let's hope this is the beginning of the end of Rove.
