On Thursday Feb 5ths midday show, Ron used the "live beep" when he was talking. Did anyone else notice this? Why would Ron do that? He knows as well as anyone else that Anthony (O&A) started this in 2001 when anthrax was mailed to NBC in NY and he was "Foul Mouthed Tom Brokaw". I don't think it's a big deal, but I was curious what others thought about this.

If they were cool w/ D&M like I've heard they are, why would they be going with the jabs? They never made fun of O&A w/ the S4S3?

yeah, that's it, R&F were jabbing at D&M, and supporting the lawyers. Of course...

They really didn't joke about s4s3 but they did joke about one of the fights between o&a and d&m
specifically when anthony went cuckoo and started saying names he wasnt allowed to like howard, d&m, Imus and the like. Ron went on the air with his "fight" with Eddie Trunk it was hilarious.

2 weeks till i get to hear D&M's reaction thats great i cant wait. Don said somethin about going over to Wpgc didnt sound to much like a joke but i could be wrong.

Why would they get in trouble when the person who was on the other delay didnt hit the button either?

Anyways thanks to ScotchGuard,TeaBag420,TheMojoPin,you guys helped me gain a couple extra minutes of my life for use at a later date.

Well, for being such a Don and Mike fan, as I have been accused time and again (not to mention being such a radiophile geek), I actually had no idea what the hub-bub was all about until I finally checked out DCRTV today and read last week's accounts (it was a tough week).

WOW!

That's pretty funny, and pretty fucked up. I knew they were on some sort of vacation, but I had no idea it was what it was. It's fucked up because DC-101's Elliot in the Morning says and gets away with much worse than saying "Bullshit."

WHen I read Ndugu's post I was thinking back to the incident a few years ago, not knowing it was a recent thing.

mercury29 - while they haven't made fun of O&A and the Sex for Sam bit, there have been moments where someone could read between the lines, such as the second Dave and Busters, when one of the contestants for one of their gameshows said they had sex in a church, and Ron commented about leaving that one alone, and then began to tell them how wrong they were, and that they wanted to stay on the air. Also, you are right - that was hysterical when Don read all the names, knowing WNEW would edit out all of the Howard Stern references, and then listened to the edited version the next day.

Witness - there are actually three people with access to the "dump" button. Don, the producer and someone in a back room (on R&F it's just the guys and El Jefe or Spoon). The fact that the word went over the air meant that they, as a collective unit, had made some sort of decision to try and make a point.

Anyway, here's some blurbs from DCRTV for anyone who was as confused as I was...

D&M Suspended - 2/5 - DCRTV first reported on Wednesday that Infinity's WJFK-FM has suspended afternoon drive team "Don And Mike." For two-ish weeks. Without pay. Including some of D&M's staff. For a "content violation." Apparently, the word "bullsh*t" got on the air twice during Tuesday's show. Could be for something more than that, too. Possibly for airing a listener's phone number. Or that "incest contest" in January. And, as usual, there's the wild rumor that Don Geronimo's back in the hospital with kidney problems and that this is just a publicity stunt. Geronimo did engage in two non-bleeped utterances of "bullsh*t" in reference to nationally syndicated morning man and fellow Infinity employee Don Imus's recent utterance of the word. Radio And Records reports that the DC-based nationally syndicated radio duo will return to the airwaves on 2/16. Until then - reruns. More as we hear it.....

And here's something on Ron and Fez; wish DCRTV Dave would have mentioned that this was a bit, and that he really didn't say words that were bleeped...sheeeeesh...

Joking JFK Bleeps Ron - 2/5 - Ron Bennington uttered "bullsh*t," "f*cker," and "b**bs" several times during the 11 AM hour of "Ron And Fez" today on WJFK-FM. However, each time there was an audible "beeeeep" during the nasty word. Ron said it was due to "new equipment" that has just been installed at 106.7. No mention of Don and Mike's woes. See newsblurb below.....

And finally, some Howard and O&A Talk also on DCRTV which has nothing to do with anything else, except it's kind of interesting...

Jackie Back To Howard? - 2/5 - From DCRTV's Rumorama. Is Jackie "The Joke Man" Martling negotiating to return Howard Stern's radio show? Is Martling also talking to Opie and Anthony, who might resurface on Sirius this summer? Hmmm.....

Ok...the bleep makes sense now to me. I got all confused there for a moment. Now it's better...yes...now it's better.

they suspended them for 2 weeks? without pay? how is Don gonna buy his drugs?

Was Imus suspended? He said Bullshit and that's what D&M were talking about.

Why was Mike suspended? he didn't say it. And aren't there 3-7 layers of "dump" to catch things like this?

Craig Coleman (aka: "Lewtard" aka "The Keanu Reeves Guy") posted an edited clip of Don saying "Bullshit," and he claims Dons actually saying "BullSHED."

Here's the 9 second clip - "Bull-SHED"? (http://www.dcrtv.org/donbs.mp3)

Wish he had just let play it in context, but then again...naaaaah, I don't care.

Either way, with all of the lines of defence to make sure these horrible, nasty words don't get over the air into our tender ears, it has to be a publicity stunt - Stern has whined about it twice now in the last week.

What has Stern said about it?

I didn't hear it first hand, but last week he supposedly went off on it, saying that they got away with it, without mentioning that they were suspended.

Today he was going off on all the times he's edited during the course of the show - he mentioned how crap like "Bubba The Love Sponge" and "D&M saying the S Word" make it tougher for him. Robin then asked if they got away with it, and he mentioned, off hand, that they did get suspended without pay for two weeks - no mention how it was said in response to Imus getting away with saying it.

Like I said; I'd like to hear it in context, but also like I said...I really, really don't care anymore.

It easily could be a stunt - their ratings here in DC are not what they were when they left afternoon drive and went to middays. They are a lot better than what the middays were getting, but no where close to the enormous ratings they got before they left.

Of course, the whole station's ratings are down - during the war everyone fled to the news stations, and this is true across the country.

However, many of the DC folks got turned off by trying to kiss up to markets outside of Washington - changing their show to try to appeal to those markets, even though they never did that before when they went on in Vegas, Seattle, San Francisco or the others - and then just the outward hostility to those that were listening, and finally the fact that they are also doing the "X number of years on my contract" shit that Stern does, which (in my opinion) gives no one incentive to listen.

Even die hard fans I've talked with have noted the darker, angrier tone, and say the only thing worth catching anymore is Buzz Burbank's news segments (I have to admit, the show where he got drunk on the air, and then had to do the news, was hysterical).

And here in DC people now can compare and contrast how shows treat their fans, by simply giving Ron and Fez a listen. There are many Don and Mike fans that are also becoming Ron and Fez fans.

Don't get me wrong - I do not what to get into a pissing match with any show against any other show; I stand by my original belief that people can be a fan of all of these shows - it's not mutually exclusive. And to put it in perspective, D&M fans/listeners still out number R&F fans/listeners by about 3 to 1*, so there is still a lot of way to go until they own DC, and get the juice to be able to be syndicated.

I think a big step in helping cure the ratings for all the shows woes is dependent on settling R&F down in one spot; getting rid of O'Reilly (who has the BALLS today to air a bit that has been exclusive to Don and Mike for over 10 years - the infamous Larry King "Rave Out" tape from his old radio show days! - "These are things I look for in the young MD..."); and settle on a consistant sound from AM to PM.

(BTW - did anyone notice that Jim Kramer was pulled last night after the replay of the Fastest Hour?)

Ok...enough with my thesis...time to go nail it to WJFK's door....

* - I totally pulled that ratio out of my ass, btw

As far as the treatment of listeners i was listen to Stern a couple weeks ago and he just kept freakin out at callers some times over sum simple shit, once he jumped on Arty too. Stern never sounded so much like Imus before. He is old and it is early in the morning but you know that cranky old guy bit aint that entertaining to me.

I was thinkin about the whole Bill O'really thing and wondered why El Jefe couldnt take the slot. It came to me that O'reilly is the yin to the other shows yang.

I also wondered why the hell JFK has Ron and Fez do basically 2 shows? ANd then replay it?

I figure its to draw attention to the real show which comes on after Don and Mike. I still havent figured the replay shit.....I would think El Jefe could fit there nicely.

I thought that Larry King tape came on at the begining of the Don and Mike show.

I think he's become his father - always telling people to "Shut up!" and "Sit down!" Supposedly he doesn't do that with his own kids, so he has to take it out somewhere.

I was thinkin about the whole Bill O'really thing and wondered why El Jefe couldnt take the slot. It came to me that O'reilly is the yin to the other shows yang.

Eventually they'll realize O'Reilley doesn't fit on WJFK and move him off - the midday spot is considered a better time slot, so more than likley R&F would have dibs before El Jefe, who hasn't proven himself here yet five days a week. However, they could also bring in another show to plug into the middays, like "Out To Lunch" (out of Baltimore), or even bring back the Junkies. Odds are it will be R&F though, but I wish WJFK would make up their fucking mind.

(El Jefe would fit nicely after D&M, 7-11. In many ways he reminds me of the Junkies old show).

I also wondered why the hell JFK has Ron and Fez do basically 2 shows? ANd then replay it?

I think to generate attention, and possibly get people use to listening to them in the afternoons as well. Basically, they had an hour that needed to be filled, and they dangled a carrot in front of our radio buddies, and got them to commit to the two shifts.

The replay it to (a) give them a break and (b) get people use to listening to "The Fastest Hour" portion of the show next to the rest of their show - it's a great format that they make work, and hopefully when they do finally they end up with ONE 4 hour show, then they can include that.

I thought that Larry King tape came on at the begining of the Don and Mike show.

The Larry King tape I'm talking about goes back years and years; a listener/fan of D&M was working at another radio station (does anyone remember "Aq" or "Aquaman" who worked on WHFS, then over in baltimore on 98 Rock?) an dubbed the original tape off, and added the music behind it. The only show he sent it to was D&M (that's how you can tell it's originated from them - because of the music, which I think Aq said was from "Planet of the Apes").

Don and Mike played that tape into the ground for about 2 - 3 years (often at the start of the show) about 10-11 years ago, and still occasionally reference it ("Pressure under fire..." "Cooperstown...""I'm lost..."). Everyone has the Orson Welles rave out, but no one else has this one, except D&M, and now (evedently) Bill O'Reilley.

Time to go nail another thesis to the WJFK door...

Curtoid,
do you remember don and mike when they were on WAVA?
I still have tapes of shows and it's horrible to listen to now.
theres an echo like theyre talking from a cave. and the
beginning top 10 list is unbearable. i cant see how ANYONE
could listen to them then. then again, i was in elementary
school.
These days they seem to be 90% anti listeners/everyone.
i guess they realize no matter how they treat callers,
theyre always going to have listeners. and theyre still going
at a pace where elementary school kids would LOVE ( BM!!,
farts,...)
It's a drastic change listening to them on my way home
from work, hearing them rant their way to a heart attack
on stupid stuff, then have ron and fez come on and
welcome callers, even having them be part of the show in a
positive way.
speaking of rants, i'll end this now

I didn't listen to them at all until they joined Howard on WJFK back in 1991, and only after I heard Mike to an impression of local radio sports guru Ken Beatres which cracked me up. Seems like a millions of years ago.

The WAVA stuff from the 80s I've heard is horrible. They did get good ratings, even claiming victory against Stern.

The thing that I liked about them is the same thing I like most about Stern, and that's when they are just talking about their real lives. Nothing too fancy, but often the mundane had something funny in it that worked. Ironically, this was the kind of stuff that the haters seemed to focus on and exagerate. Oh well.

I'll still listen to Buzz's newscast, and it usually is still pretty funny, and goes nicely into R&F.
