Shingles, you don't want them! Not even for your house.

EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

Seriously, I had a bout with tinnitus when I was about 19. I had gone to, oh I dunno, maybe SEVEN small venue shows back-to-back. It was the summer and I was temping as a RECEPTIONIST.

Yeah, it wasn't pretty.

oh man you guys ever have this?

in 1996 I got a 4KHz tone in my left ear that didn't go away for a week. When your ears ring real loud and then it fades... this wasn't fading after a week.

To the audiologist; headohones on, etc. Classic 4KHz Tinnitus from sound.

Me: How long until it goes away?
Doc: It depends, at best in a few days, at worst, never.

Never, I found out, meant some with this have nerves in their ears removed to get rid of the sound.

It went away and didn;t come back. I was in a band, playing without ear protection. No more. Scared the shit out of me; I would ask the students to not be quiet. They'd ask each day. They were bummed when it went away.

[Gnarly Edit: Why one ear? He took a big piece of wax waaay inside my other ear; he said that was protecting it. Like Shrek with the candle. Oh, you're eating now? oops.]

I have that. Or at least I slightly have it. Constant ringing in the ears. I had a bad infection when I was a little kid, so ever since there's been this subtle ringing. It's the worst at night, cuz you need a sound machine or something to keep you from going insane. But you also learn to ignore it.

Mine was a fan; hadda have a fan running while sleeping, or radio, or both.

PS: I think we all have some noise background; meaning, it's very rare to be in a place of silence. Not just quiet, I mean silence; like in anechoic chambers. You've seen these? They look like a room built of foam spikes. Thats to make it have zero sound reflection. Go in a room like that, and you can hear your heart beat, and some have heard the blood flow through their body, I'm guessing, as it makes it way round the ears.

I think we've all had it at one point or another. There are times where it would come and go for me. I'd go for hours hearing it, then it would stop and start again a few hours later. I'm lucky it did start and stop like that and did go away altogether.
