Here is a report that says that Osama bin Ladin has been captured "a long time ago" and is being held for later exploitation. HBox made this comment in the "WTC victims families being too greedy?" thread and it made me wonder something: if bin Laden WERE captured, would that guarantee Bush's reelection -- depsite the hammering he'll no doubt get from Kerry on the domestic front? Personally, I think it would certainly help but it won't lock it up for Bush.

Capturing bin laden would greatly improve Bush's reelection chances. For one, in the weeks following the capture that would be the only thing in the news. Kerry could carp on domestic issues nonstop, but no one would care. The media would be all over bin Laden and the War on terrorism. He already has an advantage over Kerry in this area, and if it were the only issue, and Bush could use this as an example of his success, Kerry would suffer greatly. Secondly, Bush could say "I cuaght bin laden." And it would work, even though he had little to nothing to do with it. In fact, there's amore than credible case to be made that he hindered the search for bin laden, but it wouldn't matter. It's not logical, but aren't logical. Or very smart.

However, if it happens long enough before the election, (like a few months) then it wouldn't matter much. The capture of Saddam only brought Bush a temporary spike in approval. I think capturing bin Laden would be different, but everything fades over time.
