View Full Version : Mars rover makes 'significant findings'

NASA plans to announce Tuesday "significant findings" involving the six-wheeled rover that has been searching the dusty martian landscape since January for any history of water.

NASA to announce discoveries Tuesday (http://www.cnn.com/2004/TECH/space/03/02/mars.rovers.ap/index.html)

Have we found evidence of water?

Possibly ever better: microorganisms.

Gilbert Levin, Chairman of the Board and Executive Officer for Science of Spherix Incorporated in Beltsville, Maryland, has long argued that the Viking Mars Lander found living microorganisms on Mars' soil in 1976. Levin's Story (http://www.space.com/scienceastronomy/opportunity_evidence_040229.html)

If the buzz this is generating is very significant, except some big news by the end of the day.... or maybe nothing. Just a rock full of dust.

Another cool thing about Mars is they have an area on their planet called the Forbidden Time Zone which if you enter it, you will be stuck there forever which would be a drag but you would also live forever which would be kinda cool 'cause that would mean I could play wallball forever (permitted that they have walls in the Forbidden Time Zone).

NASA: Liquid water once on Mars (http://www.cnn.com/2004/TECH/space/03/02/mars.findings/index.html)

"Three and a half years ago, in July 2000, we were on stage here to talk about sending two rovers to get evidence of past water. NASA and its international partners have turned those dreams to reality," said Ed Weiler, NASA associate administrator for space science.

It's good something has panned out for NASA, considering all the recent setbacks.

Given the way the thing lands, there might be pieces of parachutes, braking rockets, the balloons that encased the thing, and who knows what else as it bounced around and then deflated and pulled in the balloons.

Hoagland? Oh man, he was once actually interesting, this is maybe the 286th 'amazing find' that will soon 'fill the headlines of the world' but alas, as he says, NASA is hiding all of the evidence that life is there.

Hmmm: If NASA wanted a few Bazillion Dollars, just show the evidence! Show a few artifacts and hell yeah we'll want to send people.

Mars having a watery past is indeed fascinating, and begs all the Qs you find elsewhere. But it de-provincializes us once again. Another cosmic demotion. Time to tweak the Drake Equation.

And here's to a man who gave his Life in the pursuit to find life on Mars: Wolf Vishniac.

The American press fails to mention one aspect in this story.

European scientists said Monday they are examining an image of its Beagle 2 Mars lander, taken moments after it separated from its mothership and later was lost, that also shows an unidentified object. (http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/story/CTVNews/1078766476228_74175676/?hub=SciTech)

The mysterious blot on the photograph is being scrutinised as one of several potential reasons for the failure of the mission (http://news.scotsman.com/latest.cfm?id=2623746)

To find an object that size from that distance is on the order of Miracle. For me, there are a whole lotta other things it could be besides the Beagle; NASA Photos are famous for Artifacting; little places where data dropped out or was lost; they can show up and seem like the most amazing, natural features.

Example: The Mars "Face" has some pixels exactly where a nostril should be. Sure helps.

Hoagland also spotted a Martian waffle iron and a piston from a '39 Ford.
I am not making this up.

Of course he has a conspiracy theory, er, model, he likes to say, usually just before he mentions for the ten thousandth time that "Walter" (Cronkite) "predicted" Hoagland would get a Nobel Prize.
