It's saturday afternoon and I'm bored so I'm flipping through the channels and land on Soul Train and God is it awful. It is so pointless. It's just shitty music and people dancing and the camera just keeps on going between all these people looking like idiots. It has to be the worst show ever.

This will sound racist, and perhaps it is a bit, but there's the history of most popular music right there; black people: Robert Johnson for the guitar, Aretha for the Voice, maybe KoKo Taylor if it's blues; then on to Chuck Berry, Little richard, Little Stevie Wonder, and a zillion more, but Rock and Roll can often be distilled down to: Blues + Gospel + Electricity. Wow that's a broad brush, and if I read it I'd say that's exagerrating, but just trying to make a point. Much of the history of early rock is also the history of white artists recording material written and performed by black guys a zillion times better, but black back then = no airplay. real airplay, at least.

I saw Koko Taylor once. Oh my God almost every song was a variation on 12-bar blues. But that band played each song so distinctly, and laid grooves down that Non-Fly White Guys like me can only Dream About playing.

I haven't watched Soul Train in years, since they don't syndicate it much in the lily-white Pacific Northwest. I used to love watching it in the eighties and early nineties when WGN was part of our cable package.

I'm solidly in the Mizzle camp regarding black people and music. Most white music these days is pure aural mayonaise. I don't know why they bother, It's all been shite since Roy Orbison died.

Beefy reminds me a bit of a young Steve Dahl.

I couldn't disagree more, Se7en. A local boutique video store in town has bootlegged tapes of old Soul Trains from the seventies featuring Al Green, James Brown, the Spinners, etc. They are mind-blowingly phenomenal - if the sounds of sweet seventies soul could be your (brand new) bag. Don Cornelius was cooler than the other side of the pillow and the chicks were scorching hot, rocking their Angela Davis 'fros.
