i would vote for a candidate based solely on their stance as to daylight savings time. it is by far the most important issue facing our country today, but people are just too scared to talk about it. i think if there were a candidate brave enough to confront the daylight savings problem, everyone's quality of life would be greatly improved.

From Standardtime.com ([url=http://)
a study of traffic accidents throughout Canada in 1991 and 1992 by Stanley Coren of the University of British Columbia before, during, and immediately after the so-called "spring forward" when DST begins in April. Alarmingly, he found an eight percent jump in traffic accidents on the Monday after clocks are moved ahead. He attributes the jump to the lost hour of sleep. In a letter to the New England Journal of Medicine, Coren explained, "These data show that small changes in the amount of sleep that people get can have major consequences in everyday activities." He undertook the study as a follow up to research showing that even an hour's change can disrupt sleep patterns and "persist for up to five days after each time shift." Other observers attribute the huge spike in accidents on the first Monday of DST to the sudden change in the amount of light during driving times. Regardless of the reason, there is no denying that changing our clocks has a significant cost in human lives.

Serious thread?
Beats me but I wanted to jump through my radio to wring the neck of the lady who insisted to Ron that DST involved an actual change in the Amount of Sunlight we get; as if tonight the Earth goes into some weird part of its orbit that suddenly gives or takes an hour of sun away.
Thank christ Ron knows more then a little bit about Astronomy. His response was great.
Farmers?
Energy Conservation?
Beats the shit outta me; I've heard those and plenty more. The best explanation I ever heard though, wish I knew who it was, explained it along the lines of this:
The sun is getting up earlier and earlier each day, so we change the clocks so that we get up earlier too.
Simple. Wonderful. A true Answer, Knowing Something as opposed to Knowing What something Is.
Example: Stolen from Feynman
You put a ball in a wagon, and you pull the wagon. The ball rolls to the back of the wagon. Why?
One Answer: Inertia.
Another Answer: Nobody has any idea whatsoever why the ball rolls back. None. However, when we look around in nature; we see that often things that are rolling keep rolling until something stops them. We also see that things standing still tend to stay that way; unless pushed or pulled.
So; if you look sideways at the wagon, you will see that the ball isn't really rolling to the back of the wagon, the wagon is moving and the ball is staying where it was.
There's a name for this, and it's called Inertia, but the name gives you Absolutely NOTHING that really answers the question. There's a huge difference between knowing the Name of something; and Knowing something.
----
Not stolen from Feynman:
If we could teach Knowing stuff, instead of knowing the Names of stuff? We might begin to address the utterly horrific science illiteracy that plagues that nation.

Its not so mush of an actual pain in the ass as to why we do it that bothers me, its the fact that the next time we change the clocks it dats dark so much earlier that bothers me. I hate getting home and its dark out. Now, its going to start staying light out later and later and eventually its going to be still light out at 8pm, not that that bothers me either, I just wish it would stay lighter later, and the best way to do that is NOT change the clocks back. It cant be the farmers, because they work by the sun; if it was 11pm and still sunny, they would still be plowing fields. Its almost like a tradition now that bullshit. I bet if one of the guys running added it as something theyd change if elected, some people would go for it.
By the way, how do I post with the voting thing I see in other peoples posts? I see the bullet list, but dont see the option to have a list that can be voted on.

To the right of where it says "New Discussion" on the upper right hand side of the page, is "New Poll". Use that to post a poll thread

Just my luck. I was letting the comp download a few choice episodes of "Over There" last night, fell asleep in front of the comp again, and woke up at fucking 7 am. The night I get an extra hour I wake up early in the morning. What's wrong with me?????
