Sorry it's not anything as interesting as what the Thread title might imply; but ya gotta love receiving this for the 20th time:
Dear Michael,
Thank you for sending this piece to The Forum, but we are not going to be able to use it. USA TODAY only has room for a very limited number of the hundreds of op-ed submissions it receives each week.
Sincerely,
Tim Wendel

Mike, I want to be a writer. In fact I'm going to send some of the stuff I've written out to literary magazines to try to get them published.
If you got rejected, then certainly I will be soon upset as well.
You probably used to many big words. Your too smart for the average citizen.

Wow thanks to all.
Mike, don't worry if your stuff stinks.
Believe me; I'm a better critic then writer; I can usually know when it's not that good, and had the feeling on this one. And i feel that way usually; even when it makes it to print I read it and see the weaknesses. Its tough to sound original; to have a voice.
I listened back to myself on the show from a couple nights back and could not stop cringing; wow i talked wayyy too fast; trying to get it all in is not good. Less, better chosen words = better. I went the other way.

I've had good luck with the Washington Post letters to the editor and I think the trick is to get them submitted before 5am on the day the article you're responding to is printed.

Mike, most of your posts here are better than 99% of the cartoons that USA Today puts out as "news."
Feel free to post your editorial here if you want.

From someone else who has received many rejections for his writing I completely sympathize. I got one that said
"We were pleased to read your submissions. We wish to thank you for sending your work to us for consideration. We have had great response to our journal, in part because of the support of poets like you."
I needed a shovel to plow through the rest of the letter. They never tell you anything useful, something vague about so many submissions, so little time. My favorite part about the rejections from lit mags is the "Your work wasn't good enough for our mag, but buy our mag so you can see what is good enough." Keep plugging along. Unfortunately a lot of editors wouldn't know good work if it bit them.

I don't know why you would be cringing. You are great on the show. I think you are one of the most unique and fascinating people they ever have on the show (celebrities included).
Don't let them get you down, just say fuck em. ;)
All this talk about having your writing rejected makes me nervous about my new writing venture. :quest:

Ah I posted a link to it, with a long diatribe, then deleted the whole thing, coz the post Sucked!
Long story short: A musician I know who is famous in guitar circles but not really well known is getting ripped-off on eBay. His band is one of the most bootlegged in europe and japan, and they sell the shit on eBay, and he's written to them, and like my efforts, he gets... nada.
I'm quoted in his 21 April on-line Diary linked below, it's essentially the thing rejected by USAT, just click on 'Fripp's Diary [who? exactly.] then scroll down. A great blog by the way for someone who's had quite a long run in music:

Sheesh whats my problem heres the piece of shit:
An Open Letter to eBay,
I would like to call attention to an increasing trend on the eBay auction site: the large-scale sale of Bootleg CD, and DVDs. More importantly, this is going on virtually unchecked.
As I write this; an eBay search on "Springsteen DVD" returned 88 auctions. The vast majority were bootlegs; meaning either an audience member recording, or in the recent case of musician Sophie B. Hawkins', the sale of a CD she was about to, but had not yet released. Ms. Hawkins won a judgement stopping someone who was 'Promotional: Not for Sale' CDs on the site. But for other artists, the bootlegs are there, now, up for grabs.
They range from professionally pressed Discs complete with professional artwork, to the sale of CD-R and DVD-R discs; blanks, available at any computer store. The technology is readily available to anyone with a computer with the sufficient hardware.
In the past, eBay policed the sale of material that violated the rights of the artist. As a five year member of eBay member with a 100% rating; I once attempted to auction a legitimately released, non-bootleg Bruce Springsteen CD; a 3-inch CD Single. It was removed immediately; flagged as a bootleg. Completely forgivable, an honest mistake. But something has changed. eBay is now bursting with illegal music and video for sale. I use `sale' deliberately; while eBay is an auction site, it does include a `Buy It Now' function such that if one wishes, they can bypass the auction process.
Perhaps there is some confusion as to what is and what is not Bootleg. It would not seem difficult however, given Springsteen's recorded catalog, to surmise that auctions labeled "BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN: This Is Your Life: Nine DVD SET!" and "SHEA STADIUM 4/10/03 Two DVD set WOW!" are not legitimate releases from Mr. Springsteen's catalog.
I do not speak for Mr. Springsteen, but it would seem that even the casual fan is aware that he has fought the bootleggers in court; in 1998 Springsteen went to England to stop the sale of an album he recorded but never intended to release. "I came over here to defend the ownership of my music. It's something I've fought for since I was young, and I'm really satisfied", Springsteen said, after the court agreed that even a recording done by the artist, when sold without their permission, was an illegal bootleg.
Essentially, every Springsteen show is recorded without permission. The technology is now such that very high quality audio and video can be obtained from easily concealable recorders. While the recorders might be easy to hide, the sale of the Bootleg material on eBay is proudly displayed for all to see. A search of many other popular artists will often return illegal CDs and DVDs.
I have attempted to speak to eBay about this, but they are one of several Corporations they have become exceedingly difficult to contact. The `Help' section is anything but. A contact phone number? I'm still looking. The only recourse for someone reporting a Bootleg is a standard form, which when submitted, generates an automatic reply Thanking me for the information; and then. nothing.
This is theft. And eBay is indeed assisting buyers and seller who wish to engage in this theft. What has changed?
There is hope; a recent decision involving Grammy nominated artist Sophie B. Hawkins started her own record label with her life savings, and was about to release her debut CD, only to find someone getting up to $300 for a copy of the CD. Hawkins took the matter to court in Santa Monica, California, and had the sale stopped. But Ms. Hawkins problem was singular, while for Springsteen and other artists, the bootlegging is systemic, an ongoing industry of Theft, that will continue unabated, and may indeed be on the rise, as long as eBay allows this practice on continue on their site.
