[color=purple]When the WTC attack happened, the one thing that always perplexed me most was that these guys stood there in line, presumably made small talk, boarded the plane and just generally spent time with people they knew they were later going to sentence to a fiery death. They watched famililies - husbands & wives, parents & children -unsuspectingly say their last goodbyes, all the while keeping a straight face.

Then i read an article like this (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/4816579/), and suddenly evil has a new face.

Palestinian militants attacked an Israeli vehicle near a Jewish settlement in the Gaza Strip, killing four children and their mother ... Police said the white Citroen station wagon spun off the road after the initial shooting, then the attackers approached the vehicle and shot the occupants at close range ... The car was riddled with bullets, and the carpet inside was stained with blood.

I'll never understand how a person has the capacity to kill the innocent, be it by blowing up a bus or through a sniper's rifle. But as bad as that is, this is just beyond comprehension.

Not by all though. I saw a news report the other night that showed how attacks like this, and the ones that have been taking place in Iraq, are met with impromptu celebrations in the Arab world (ala 9/11).

I honestly don't know what's worst; being capable of killing woman & children, or being capable of rejoicing because of it.

We've failed as a species. There's just really no other way to say it.

It's that fucked up notion of being able to convince yourself that another person isn't ACTUALLY another person. The Nazis did it perfectly in WW2 with a whole host of races and types of people...and now you've got Muslim extremists happily picking up the slack.

The idea of pretending another human being ISN'T a human being just so it's easier to condemn them or kill them is about as low as you can go.

They're "evil-doers." Things in the world are either evil or good. Thinking at a level beyond that would make my brain hurt.

(Note that by making fun of the "evil doer stuff, doesn't mean I think that there is any rationale that could justify these acts, but some level of analysis, beyond evil-doer is necessary.)

Humans in general need to be taught to have this kind of heartlessness.

Most of these Muslim extremists have had this stuff drilled into their heads since they were little kids by nutso fanatic religious leaders and politicians.

The Nazis had to switch to the death camps fulltime because their troops were being demoralized by the mass shootings they had to engage in over and over again in their occupied territories. They accepted the hatred of the Jews...but since so many of the soldiers hadn't been raised like this since childhood, they couldn't just "switch it on" to the levels the "Final Solution" required.

Until Vietnam, American soldiers weren't trained with "human" targets. All of their practice ranges and exercises involved things like generic target boards or sandbags...none of which looked human. When they finally had to start killing REAL people, especially up close, it was found to be incredibly traumatic and demoralizing. I can't remember where I saw it, but I think some study found that only 50% of American soldiers in WW2 at best even FIRED their weapons...they just couldn't make that step to killing another human being, because nothing in their lives had taught or prepared them for that. Now our troops (And police) are trained with human shaped tragets and obstacles, to help get them get over that "hurdle."

So basically, THIS "low" Gary is talking about is tied directly to something I consider almost as "low"...poisoning a child's mind with hate.

the japanese did it the worst during their invasion of china. they would tkae living breathing chinese men and tie them up and use them for bayonette practice. the japanese were so bad at that time a nazi official helped smuggle chinese out of harms way. its fucked up when even a nazi says its bad.

The Rape of Nanking.

Yes, it's horrific, but people say all of this goes against human nature, as if there was only one human nature.

What I mean is our brains evolved but we couldnt shut them down for improvements. Literally that's it. Meaning, while the higher levels of our brain are there, we still have the R-complex and Limbic parts that are basically the brain of, well, the r stands for reptilian, so there a reptile.

Agression
Territoriality
Pack Behaviour
Willingness to follow Leaders/Hierarchies

This is all inside those reptilian parts of the brain; and I'd say a lot of this is the struggle between this the different parts of this crazy thing in our heads. We have the capacity for love and the build, and to kill and destroy. Go figure.
