View Full Version : "A Place For My Stuff"

Today I rented a 5 x 7 ft storage unit for $60/month because I have too much "stuff."

And I hate myself.

I moved into my apartment in 1990. It literally echoed when I was fully moved in. After 14 years, I have too much stuff.

The bad thing, I HAVE given stuff away!

I can't give away the stuff from my dad's house-- the old china, the old pots and pans. It's hard to give it all away. My dad was an AWESOME cook. I pick up each piece and think, "He cooked pork chops and sausage in sauce in this"; or "He cooked corned beef and cabbage in this."

The thing is I have some awesome cookwear myself (Calphalon with glass tops) , so I don't want to use my dad's cookwear or dishes.

Am I silly for holding on to this? I have pictures, but after that, all I have left is the dishes and cookwear.

I just can't part with it. I have other things to store, but am I silly for still holding on to things from my parents? Even after 28 and and 16 years, respectively for my mom and dad?

Alice,
I know exactly how you feel! I have stuff of my wife still laying around. My kids have a lot of it. It's like if you get rid of this stuff, you're getting rid of a part of your loved one. I know it's silly but that's how it feels. Just go with your heart!!!

Alice, a storage place is a great short-term solution for your stuff problem. But you have to figure, at $60/month, the price you are paying will quickly outweigh the value of what you are storing.

A girl I work with, after her mom passed, got all of the living room furniture. That was over 2 years ago.

Figure $60/mo. x 30 mos = $1,800. Go to fucking Ethan Allen and buy some REAL furniture. Not keep the stinky old cigarette burned shit for sentimental reasons.

Just my 2 cents

(hmm .02 x 30 months... oh, never mind.)

I'd say pick out a couple of things that you feel really sentimental about and send the rest to goodwill.

Alice, after re-reading my post, it seems to come off a bit harsh, that was not my intention. I am still guilty of keeping over a thousand LP's and 45'5 stored in my basement ( I'll explain that to the kiddies later), and 3 386 laptops.

Someone gave me a purging rule of thumb once.
If you haven't used it in the past 2 years, and if you pick it up and it does not fill you with emotion... Chuck IT!!

After getting married, moving twice, having kids, I learned to prioritize my stuff. Just last Junk Day, I got rid of a perfectly good mini roulette wheel, 3 video cards, a big ass wall mount air conditioning unit, and a pile of 2x4's.

( I still kept my complete 1977-1978 NHL trading card set. Has almost zero value, but, Oh well.)

Never! It's a personal choice and only yours to make. If you were to let them go either giving them away or selling them it will never diminish the love you hold for your Mom and Dad!

This really isn't adding anything but after reading this post, "Your Favorite Thing" by Sugar is running through my head...

Tell me I'm your favorite thing
You can tell me anything
I wouldn't mind
Dream about you every night
Something tells me that's not right
I wouldn't mind, I wouldn't mind
Not at all

Stuck inside my head again
Hoping that this never ends
I wouldn't mind
It's my existence you ignore
And I can't take you anymore
I wouldn't mind, I wouldn't mind

The wait is killing me
I keep waiting, wait impatiently
What do I need to do?
I'll do anything you want me to
I'll sit on a bookcase in your room
Alone with all your other favorite things

Now that I'm your favorite thing
Let's see what the future brings
I wouldn't mind
And I can't tell you what's been happening
I don't know, I don't know
I wouldn't mind, I wouldn't mind
Not at all

I think its perfectly alright to keep those things that have meaning to you. I have a lot of things that were given to me by loved ones that echo in my heart. I do tend to hoard things that have no use that I either purchased or found that I have to work on getting rid of. Im looking right now at a vacuum cleaner that I remember buying maybe 10 years ago and it never really worked right and it doesnt work right now at all. I kept thinking: "someday I'll take it apart and find out why its not working and fix it. " But you know, I know I wont do it, its useless to me and it takes up space.
Sentemental things are a different matter to me. If my mom had given that vacuum to me, I know I would dishonor her by throwing it out (in my mind) and I would really take the time to fix it, but since this particular thing is something I bought, the emotional attachment is not there and I can throw it away without looking back.
Your feelings for those things are rational and right and no one should say different, even thought you have a perfectly good Calphalon set, those pots and pans mean something.
I have this bread knife that my grandfather had left behind when he and my grandmother moved to California when I was a kid. My father found it when he went to go look at the house right before they moved. Its old, been sharpened so many times it tapers from its orignal inch and a quarter to a point that is as thick as a pencil's width. To me, its a piece of history or my family and Id never part with it. I keep it for honor, even if I dont use it. Maybe someday youll get a house with a basement that you can take the stuff out of storage and keep closeby so you can look at it without making a trip, but for now if you dont have the space, it'll do.

I have an bingo lottery card worth $10 that my mom gave me to cash in. This was three years ago. I still have it.

And both my parents are still here.

BTW, all my girlfriend has that was her mothers is dishes, and she will not part with them for anything. Even though she now has 3 sets of dishes.
