View Full Version : Good Ol' Lefty

So, in attempt to better myself and generally develop a larger weltenschauung, I'm adopting a regimen consisting of quite a few different activities, one of which is training myself to be ambidextrous. I've given up, at least temporarily, my right-handedness. I'm trying to do everything that I used to do with my right with my left, and so far it's been, well, weird. Besides the obvious: sexual activities, writing, wiping myself, there's a host of other things that I just can't get the hang of doing as a lefty. Things like packing and lighting cigarettes, unlocking my truck door, setting the dials on the washer and dryer, working the TV remote. I don't really know where to go with this thread, but I guess I'll keep you all abreast of my progress. If there's any lefties out there who can give me some things that really torment them about living in a right-handed world I would appreciate it.

Try having your right arm immobilized in a sling or something. Did you ever try walking in a straight line with your eyes closed? Like, the next time you walk down a sidewalk (dont know if they have them in New Jersey) and see how far you can go without stepping onto the grass. We are naturally off balance and will always favor a side. I try to do stuff once in a while like just look out of one eye as if I was blind in one eye and see how Id cope. I test my perception, while driving, I'll have a passenger hold up random fingers and I try to see how many are up as I look straight ahead and stuff.

Jeez, I realised just now Im rambling, yet I cant help but hit the " Reply to Topic" button..sigh

Fairly ambidexterous by necessity (cause i'm a lefty). I don't usually write right-handed (but I can, it just takes time) and I cannot throw right-handed at all, but just about anything else I can do.

I use several right-handed things--can openers, pencil sharpeners, computer mice, and guitars just because it's pretty much what i've always used. But there are somethings that I always seem to have the wrong instinct--screwdrivers, doorknobs--these are things I almost always turn the wrong way. And i'm absolutely hopeless with scissors.

Lefty loosie, righty tighty!

I always heard it as righty tighty, lefty loosie (so even that I have backwards). I usually try first and then have to stop and say that rhyme to myself.
I also have trouble telling my left from my right--always have. I don't know if that is related, or not.

Yes, whenever the neighbor girl is sunbathing in the back yard. But I think you meant something different.

Here's a fun useless fact...

President James Garfield was ambidextrous, and he used to entertain visitors by writing in Greek in one hand while at the same time writing in Latin with his other...

And for the Record, here's the only Good Ol' Lefty I know of...

OK, I broke my right hand and had to get it surgically repaired. I was dependant on my left hand for over a year, with going through therapy. So there are many things that I'm learned to do lefty out of pure necessity. Now wiping was a hard skill to master. Something I still use, because I never got full movement back in my wrist and cant get around with my right hand.

May have ben mentioned above, but an interesting study in stroke patients, who lose movement on one side of the body.

The stroke victim will faovor the non-affected arm, and some will use the non-affected arm, to a fault. Volunteers who had their remaining good arm immobilized showed Huge gains in the use of their affected limbs, compared the patients who were allowed to use what they wished.

Necesity is an excellent motivator.

Zing.

I guess I should be more specific. In a world where seemingly most directional instincts that I may have seem to be wrong, is there some link between the instinctual ability to know right and left and everything being backwards for me.

But what do I know, i'm just retarded.

Also as a side note dyslexia, stuttering, and schizophrenia are far more common in left-handed people. Some of this comes from the nasty practice of forcing children to write with the right hand, when they are left-handed.
