A friend of mine got into a huge gambling debt about 4 years ago. He needed some money, so I lent him 1600 dollars to bail him out under the condition he would not gamble anymore. About a year later he said he had the money for me, and would pay me back soon. Then he gambled the money away, plus more. I lent him 1570 to get him out of trouble this time, which was much worse trouble than before. So basically for the last 4 years he has accumulated a debt of 3170 to me. Also, through this time he has gotten help for gambling but we really have not stayed in touch. He always said he felt weird hanging out because of the money situation. At the time, I had a feeling this was going to happen, but he needed the money regardless of future consequences.

My girlfriend, who I have been dating for 2. 5years always reminds me how he is never going to pay me back. So i made her a promise. If by the time we get married, he does not pay me back, I will give her 10% of what he owes me. If he does pay me back, she owes me the 317 dollars.

The good news is, he called me this weekend and has my money for me. All 3170, in cash. I am going to pick it up either tommorow or Saturday. This is very good news for me, who could always use the money (even though it is technically mine, i have not had it for so long that I feel like I never had it.) Plus, who knows if I would have blown it had I never lent it to him.

Anyway, come this weekend I am +3170. Just thought I would share this with the board.

Has anyone else ever lent someone money who never paid them back? Has anyone ever had to borrow a large sum of money from a friend? Did it affect the friendship? Can anyone explain to me in that last sentence if I should have used affect or effect? Hopefully the two of us can become friends one again.

I'd be willing to bet it doesn't happen. If I'm wrong, would you loan me about 3170 to pay off the bookies?

Aren't you actually up 3487?

I think you used affect correctly:

Effect is a noun, i.e. Cause and Effect, what is the desired effect of the plan?
Affect is a verb?, i.e. He worked to affect a change.

but I could be wrong.

Can I borrow $2000? I promise I'll pay you back. :)

So you didn't get the money yet??? There's a couple of more days in the week before the weekend. I hope you get your money. But lending out more money to someone that owes you- don't know what to say about that. You should have told your friend tough luck. If he got into this mess gambling, then he has to suffer the consequences of his action.

So can I borrow that $2000 or what????

I know I should have cut him off, but it was a serious matter involving the mafia. He owed them the money, and they were going to come and look for him. The only out was the money. I guess I could have let him take the beating, but what good would that have done?

And no, you can not have 2000 dollars.

Have to admit i'm not too big on lending money, not that i have much to lend. I am big on borrowing money(mostly from banks, mortgage, equity loan, car loans) Borrowed from family once in a while and have paid them back in the agreed time plus interest. A few % points more than they would get from a savings account.
I do have a rule if i lend somebody some money and they don't pay it back in the agreed time then i will not lend anymore money to them...

I have lent money to 2 other friends, one who also needed help from a gambling debt (i really hang out with some degenerates now that i think of it), and one who got into a car accident and needed the money to pay the guy off to keep it from insurance. Both of them paid me back in a few weeks or months, so it was a good experience. I this particular situation i did not want to lend him the money, but felt it was the right thing to do.

You are a good friend, but I feel when it comes to gamblers with consistent problems, a good beating will wake them up. I'd get your hands on that money as quick as possible but for your own sake, let him know that you will never lend him money again. You'd be enabling him.

Freakshow is correct in that you use affect properly.

The only caveat I would make to his response is that "effect" can also be a verb (transitive). But it's uses are fairly specific and geared towards the creation of something new rather than a change in something that is already existing. (Example: "His inability to repay the money I loaned him may effect bitterness on my part.")

Thus the change that you refer to in regard to "friendship" is a change in something that is already existing.

Check out the big brain on JeffD!

I was never particularly strong in grammer in school, but since i've been out I get the feeling that I care about using proper grammer more than most people out there.

Jeff D is consitantly my favorite poster on this board. If I was a coach, I would say "Jeff D never takes a comment off, give it 110% all the time". but I am not a coach, so I will just say he is good people.

Actually, don't give Jeff D too big of a head. He does say "But it's uses". It, meaning the word effect, is an abstraction and therefore can't take possession. Therefore, it would be "its". The word "it's" is the contraction for "it is".

You're a lucky guy.

I've calculated that between my ex-boyfriend, ex-husband and ex-roomate, I'm owed about 30K -not including interest.

I'm never loaning anyone a goddamn cent ever again. Either I have enough to give it and never expect it back, or I let you die of hunger, cold, and shivering under a bridge.

Borrowing and Loaning money are both pretty weak.
I mean, I know you gotta do what you gotta do to get by, but it stinks on ice no matter what position you're in.
Speaking from experience:
I borrowed $1300 from a friend of mine a few years ago to pay my taxes when I got laid off. I never heard the end of this kid telling me how lucky I was to have a good friend like him. I mean I appreciate what he did for me, but I hated that shit. Demeaning someone about needing the help kinda goes against the spirit of helping, doesn't it? It's really a sucky feeling to owe, even if for only a short time like I did.

I loaned $2000 to another friend of mine a few years back to get the A/C fixed at his store. Even though we made a payment plan for me to get my cash back without hurting him, it was like pulling teeth getting it all back. There were times when his planned $200 payment was $20 instead. I didn't want to be a prick and hassle him about it, but I wasn't rolling in dough and he knew it. After what seemed like a lifetime, I got my loot back, but I sure as shit don't want to be in that position again.

Incidentally, the tax loaner loaned a bass guitar to the A/C borrower 4 years ago, and the instrument still hasn't gotten back to its rightful owner. I guess there are pattern loaners & borrowers that don't mind living that way out there. I'm just not one of them.

I got a letter from the army so I think that I'll enlist. I'm not brave or proud of nothing I just want to kill something.

You're absolutely correct Jack. I noticed the error after hitting the "reply to topic" button and debated whether to go back and correct it. I knew someone would catch it, but what the heck. It does let me bring up a point I've always had a problem with in relation to "its vs. it's".

I've worked with a couple of people who use English as a Second Language (ESL), helping them by proofing some of their essays and homework. I've often wondered if we should have a different way of communicating contractions or plurality when the word already ends in "s". I think the apostrophe is overused and confusing.

Note: I just deleted a rant on possessives and plurality so as to avoid lawsuits relating to comas induced by my ramblings.

Second Note: I've never been accused of having a big head. Happily in relation to one head, sadly in relation to the other.

I'm just busting on you Jeff. Compared to most of the grammar on this and other message boards, you are still way above the curve. Also, thanks for being sensitive about the coma inducement. I have to be honest thought, that at first, I thought you misspelled comma.
