It's hard to explain this exactly, but I think I can sum it up with this story.

My old cell phone was a Nokia 5185. I've had it ever since I switched carriers a few years ago. I didn't like the phone a lot, but it got the job done.

I switched to a new phone, and I love it, but I miss having an alarm clock on the road with me. So I still kept my 5185, because I always used it's alarm function.

I'm sure my new phone has some sort of alarm function, but it's probably too complicated for me to bother to learn. In fact, I'm sure my phone has a ton of features I could find useful but I'm very lazy.

Another issue I have.... I've used Win 98 SE for so long, that when I upgraded my computers at work and at home to XP, I changed the interface and everything BACK to "Windows Classic".

That's because the Windows XP layout is an abortion.

When it comes to OSes, I don't want to change either. But frankly I don't think it's because I don't like technology change, it's because I don't like new OSes.

But when it comes to new technology I try to be on top of it, but of course I cannot do all that with the money I have.

Yesterday I updated my LONG outdated "home audio studio" (if you could call it that) by ordering some new shit, but it all comes with a price tag. My old equiptment was over five years old and it felt damn good to replace it.

I don't have a problem with the XP "halo" interface. I didn't care much for the friendly menus though so I changed those back to classic. I hate it when they think that the users are so stupid that they must as a default hide the features. The first thing I do with a system is make all files visible, as well as file extensions, I change the Windows Explorer to show me everything. I make all hidden system files visible as well.

The XP interface as far as the start button and taskbar though I've kept the new look because I like it.

I had a big problem with a corrupted firewall with my Norton Internet Security Professional, and went and got me a router with a physical firewall and had to install it myself last night. I nearly had an anurism trying to get everything working right, but thank god my bro walked me though the rough parts on the phone, otherwise I wouldnt have my computer working. I generally dont like changing technology myself, but for the most part, am finding that things are easier now then they use to be and the "extras" outweigh the hassle of adjusting.

I don't like change when it comes to technology

i sometimes feel the same way, especially at work. we support and troubleshoot the network which includes several brands of switches, routers, firewalls, data compressors, multiplexers, all kinds of circuits from satellite to microwave to atm to frame-relay, and there are dozens of tools to know to help fix problems, and the technology or platforms are always frikin changin. my brain has only so much processor power and what hurts most is my few megs of memory.

i say " can't they fucking get it right and leave it alone? then we can become like the Maytag repair man and work on getting the documentation straightened out and put together some accurate diagrams. But i guess it wouldn't keep the economy going, so it's off to work we go....

luddite.

Why do I love that word? +10 points Xtra Cred; since it's perfect too.

I say welcome to the world envisaged by Alvin Toffler in Future Shock. Essentially he theorized [in the 1950s?] that we would reach a point where necesary technology and skills needed to know how to use it would change so fast, that learning any *one* system or skill, wouldnt suffice.

Those who will not suffer Future Shock would be those who can best 'Learn how to learn'; to be able to roll with whatever the technology of the hour is.

Here today, gone later on today.

What the hell i'll go further. Technology in music is becoming its own biggest nuisance.

I wouldn't call him a luddite. It's not like he's forsaking the technology because it's displacing anyone.

Heck, if nothing else, he's almost a technology hog as he's now toting around two cell phones instead of one.

Tenbatsuzen isn't rejecting technology, just rejecting the hassle of learning how to use it differently. It would be different if he refused to use the calculator because he only believes in the abacus. Here it's just preferring his old calculator over the new one.

Don't worry abou it Ten. Eventually, you'll find it more of a hassle to deal with two phones and eventually learn how to set the alarm on the new one (or buy a digital watch).
