Intelligence backs claim Iraq tried to buy uranium
By Mark Huband in Rome
Published: June 27, 2004
Illicit sales of uranium from Niger were being negotiated with five states including Iraq at least three years before the US-led invasion, senior European intelligence officials have told the Financial Times.
Intelligence officers learned between 1999 and 2001 that uranium smugglers planned to sell illicitly mined Nigerien uranium ore, or refined ore called yellow cake, to Iran, Libya, China, North Korea and Iraq.....
Very interesting.
So, it appears as if there WAS intelligence, legitimate inteligence, about "yellowcake" being smuggled to Iraq from Africa.
My question is - how come the press is remaining silent on this? This article was published three days ago, and I haven't heard word one of this on any of the major networks.

I'm totally convinced!
They were gonna' fill their Deloreans with uranium and time travel into the future to offer help to Al-Quada during WWIII!

If it didn't go through, it didn't go through. For whatever reason, this whole thing didn't go down a good three years before the war, just like the article said.
If we're going to war over "might have's," OK. If we're going to war over what Iraq actually HAD/HAS...it's not really helping, is it?

1. The Iraq Survey Group (and UNMOVIC before the war) has already stated that Iraq had no active nuclear program at the time of the invasion. Also, Iraq already has warehouses full of yellowcake uranium, which, without very sophisticated facilities for processing it, which Iraq didn't have and wasn't trying to acquire, was worthless. So why would Iraq be trying to buy more worthless yellowcake from some abandoned mine in Niger? Was it part of Saddam's evil plans to corner the lava lamp market?
2. Officials said the fake documents, which emerged in October 2002 and have been traced to an Italian with a record for extortion and deception, added little to the picture gathered from human intelligence and were only given weight by the Bush administration.
Bush's claim was based on badly forged documents according to the US Intelligence agencies who had the documents at the time. So, if Bush was going on this "evidence" why did he later state that it was a mistake to make the claim in the first place?
3. Why is there no evidence of a deal in this article. It merely claims that someone was going into abandoned mines in Niger and sell the yellowcake to willing countries. There's no evidence in this article of anything else. It's a guy saying stuff was happening. Where's the recordings of the wiretaps, the taped meetings, who was meeting who, hello...? Agent 99...? Chief...? anyone...?
So, it appears as if there WAS intelligence, legitimate inteligence, about "yellowcake" being smuggled to Iraq from Africa.
No, it appears that you will take the tinyest shred of news favoring your god and prophet W and spin it as proof that he was right all along and is the victim of the vast liberal media conspiracy to destroy him because he's republican. But, instead you've only showed that the NYT, like the rest of the "liberal media" is as willing as any other news outlet to carry a story from a conservative London paper that has very little, if any, substantive information but is favorable to the president. So, as usual, you also weakened your liberal media conspiracy theory even further. And you missed it by that much.
