They are sooo much better then dvds. Thy cost half the price. If you take care of them they don't wear down too much. The only time I get dvd are when they have cool extras on wrestling dvds. Other then that VHS are the only way to go.

Get help.
VHS is shitty quality compared to DVD even when brand new and deteriorates at a relatively quick rate. There are also storage issues. DVDs take up less space, and if you move to binder system, much, much less space.
You can also watch a DVD on a computer. You can't do that with VHS.
If you don't like a tape, they have almost nop resale value on ebay, where as you can get an okay return if you sell off a DVD.
No extras. No commentary tracks. Give me DVD any day of the week, unless it's something not yet available on DVD.

Now, when you say they're "sooo much better" than DVD's, what the fuck exactly are you basing this on? 'Cuz I can't think of a damn thing better other than that they're cheaper.

a valid question; as many TV studios still use tape [a much higher quality then VHS], but...
DVD = No moving parts.
Size of DVD vs. Storage Capacity: I have no idea what the storage capacity is for a VHS tape, but a DVD-R has 4.7 GB, and thats a single sided, red-laser DVD.
Say a ten fold increase in three-five years for this with green/blue laser tech plus new Compression; means Kubricks entire output on one disc. Or those Ken Burns 10 part Documentaries.
Having said all of this; the five inch disc is already obsolete!

its like 3 or 4 ( i forget) DVD holders equal 1 vhs tape in width... the only reason i know this is because i was bored onetime and actually did this

You can not measure the amount a VHS can hold against a DVD due to the difference in analog vhs digital.
Some VHS can hold upwards of 8 hours of video. a DVD usually can not hold more than 2.
But, a VHS is not a 16GB medium. Its a very tough comparison

Theres no way I could ever go back to VHS. First off I can't get a Progressive Scan signal into my TV from VHS, not only that but you have to use a crappy RF or Composite signal.
Also, like mentioned DVDs last much longer and and are easier to store. But the MAIN reason I could never go back to VHS is the fact of watching movies in 4:3 format. There are a few VHS tapes that do provide a widescreen format, but just about every DVD is available in widescreen. I don't want to watch a movie in a way it wasn't shot.

true JPMick but there must be numbers out there for what the Storage of say, a 2 hour VHS tape recorded at the 2 hr Speed. That's got to be some sort of equivalent; it's analog, but like MP3, there's some kind of compression going on, so its got to be, and here's a total guess, perhaps 5-10 MB/sec. Actually not a total guess, as a DVD Recorder I had showed the bitrate when youd dub from a tape, and I think that was about it for a 2hr rec speed; about 10 MB/sec. Wow could that be off.
It is worth noting that some music producers, notably Machine still swear by running 2 inch analog tape over Any form of digital recording.
[edit-o-rama; why do i annouce this?]
Yes I was explaining why DVD is better, but then my brain started, and thats a bad thing.
It's like this. Kodak Film is analog. Recording tape is analog. Its basically a film, emulsion for Kodak; magnetic particles in some Metal Oxide for tape; and with both of those, you have a Huuuugggge amount of capacity, in terms of the amount of info it could carry. A few years ago it would be tough to argue that digital photography could even approach the 'fineness' of a film emulsion. Now there are some pictures you have to Really Zoom in on before you can see whether its pixels or film.
So the analog has this advantage of being able to record in a way that is quite different. Digital recording assumes we hear 20Hz-20,000Hz, then doubles it to 44.1 or 48 kHz in todays run of the mill 16/24 bit recorder. Now uncompressed i think a .wav file is 1.4MB a second, thats a Shitload of Memory compard to an Mp3.
Any digital cuts off the 'air' above 20,000KHz and below 20Hz, and many artists argue it makes a big difference in the recorded sound. You can hear it in Any MP3. The MPEG algorith, first thing, is chucks out anything outside of 20-20K, so its a 'Lossy' algoritm. At 64kB/sec its unlistenable, 128 is ok except for transients, 192 is minimum for a real sound system and why am i rambling about this...
It's all obsolete now; with 1 gig Compact Flash and Smart Media cards; your entire collection of music and movies will be stored in some quantum computer that will store 1 Terrabyte as an afterthought, and be so small our stupid big hands will be the limiting factor, as they are now. Image a HAL-9000 the size of a GBA. The only problem is the format war; whats it gonna be? we have a bazillion ways to get data in/out; modem, USB, firewire, and about 8 different formats of Memory Card. This is a bit more complex then VHS vs. Beta, and remember that one? The inferior format won out.

Mike, I think you are right on. Most DVD's average between 7.5 - 10Mbs. I am going to check on the output of VHS right now. I would assume it is much less. Its less lines of resolution.

The next step is to understand bit rates, that is, how video quality is measured. In the world of digital music, a lower-quality MP3 might have a bit rate of 64 kilobits per second (Kbps; remember, bits not bytes) while a higher one is encoded at a rate upwards of 160 Kbps. DVD-ready MPEG-2 video involves the same basic technology but demands far higher bit rates, in the neighborhood of 4 to 8 megabits per second (Mbps).
Fortunately, when turning VHS tapes into DVD's, you can use bit rates in the 3 to 4 Mbps range, because the medium's mediocre video quality won't improve with a higher quality capture. If you happen to have a pristine tape and a VCR with S-Video output to connect to the capture device, you may want to ratchet up the settings to 6 Mbps.

I was kidding. But you are correct, sometimes the extra's have some extra angles. I wonder if they will ever incorporate the angle change into the actual movie,

Most multiple angles I've seen in regular movies, or porn have lived up to the hype they were supposed to. If anything sometimes the angles are far worse than the regular angle. I think the whole multiple angles feature while I good idea, has never been used to it's full potential...especially as far as porn is concerned.

King Crimson Live DVD: Eyes Wide Open
Someone there had a great idea; instead of using the multiple angles; they took solo sections from different performances at a three night stand in Japan, and then a randomizing feature...
Essentially, it means each time you play the DVD, if you wish, it can be a slightly different show. The band is famous for hiding all sorts of easter egg type shit on the disc.
