I work at a pizzaria on the weekends (saturday and sunday) at the counter.

Tips are an important part of my pay because it allows me to have pocket money so i can put my pay in the bank

unfortunately i dont make alot in tips (i mlucky to hit 20 bucks a night) but it does help

i know when i go to a resturant i over tip (except when the service is bad)

how do you tip when you go out?

I overtip all the time, but in your case, you'd probably be out in the cold. I don't get tipping someone just working a counter where they're just taking orders...you might as well be tipping someone at McDonald's or 7-11. Bartenders, or a place like Starbucks, where the person taking my order then has to go get and "make" whatever I ordered, then I totally get tipping them. But if it's just someone manning the register, they'll usually just get my leftover change, if that.

Hey, if you're doing more than just taking orders, great, then yeah, you deserve a tip. But if you're just taking orders, manning the register, and handing people their food when they're standing right in front of you, it's simply not tip-worthy.

With a bartender, it is 1 buck per drink.

Never less than 18%, usually 20-25 if the service was good. One nights when my friends and I go for drinks and wings, we will usually tip 50% or even double the bill. we are loud and rowdy, make off color comments and are pains in the ass. she deserves every penny.

I also have the sickness where when I am out with more than 3 people, I have to be the one to grab the check and collect the money. i do not know if I fear the other people not leaving enough for the tip or if I am just a weird control freak.

i was just thinking about this the other day.. what about Dunkin Donuts. I go in there every day and all I order every day is one large coffee, no donut, no bagel, just the coffee. The cashier always places the coffee right behind the tip jar so I have to reach over it to get the cup, then she gives me the death stare because I don't tip. In general, i almost always overtip, but I always thought a tip for pouring coffee was overboard. Am i wrong?

Just for pouring coffee? Hell no. Getting the "speciality" coffees at a place like Starbucks? Sure, since it requires some actual effort, and since tipping can get me extra servings or free coffees down the line.

But man, I can't stress overtipping enough. My friends were knocking me for it when we all last went to Vegas, but I got comped at least 10 times more stuff than they did. It pays itself back more than enough most of the time...

That's reminds me of the time that I stopped a robbery involving a waitress in a diner...She was getting out of her car and some skell tried to rob her ....we were driving by and saw it and arrested the asshole....the next day, we went to her diner for dinner and as we were leaving...she commented that I didn't leave her a tip....I said something to the effect that she should be thankful we saved her life the day before...she said that we were just doing our jobs...an I said "Well, you're just doing yours"...goodnight!!!

If you get your house painted or floors sanded, do you tip that guy? what if he owns the buinsess? I think I would have to say No on that one.

$50 to $100 is an insult to ME, the goddamn customer. I've always tipped $20 (For something that is technically not tip-worthy at ALL. The ONLY reason a tip is taking place is for the extra cable service, so the guy should be happy to get anything. He doesn't have a job that relies on tips) and it's gotten me free channels, this last time was the first time it didn't.

The only way a cable guy is getting $50 or more bucks is if he's blowing me while he hooks everything up, and even then he's pushing it.

As a former server, I feel I tip very very fairly. AS far as I'm concerned, 15% is bare minimum--take an order, check back once or twice. Anything more, and I'm givin at least 20%. Now, if someone is doing a bang-up job, I tip a whole lot. Great service takes a lot of work on the server's part.

One thing I don't think a lot of people know is that waiters and waitresses work for tips. As a server, I made $2.38/hr. People seem to think a tip is extra money, that servers get paid a decent wage. Not true. But, a tip should not be guaranteed. The server definately has to earn the money.

Also, for servers remember and talk about customers' tipping habits. somebody who is known to tip poorly generally recieves very shitty service. Its not so much a punishment, rather the feeling of "Why bust my ass for a dollar?". Also, If you really want to impress/ or make a server feel good about a tip, use the biggest bills you can. Instead of a 8 ones, use a five dollar bill. That kind of stuff goes a long way, and ensures great service the next time you go to that restaraunt.

i am never going to comeback to this goddamn place again 25 cents

if i'm made to feel a bother to a server, bartender for them to do their job, i feel it's more of an insult to give them a quarter, than it is to leave nothing.

Ok, how about this? When I go out to eat and dont have the cash on hand, I add the tip to the check and pay by credit card. How soon do the servers get the tip money from that? I always wanted to know, since I do it pretty regularly and never seem to get any attitude from the places I go to often.. Or, is that a slap in the face somehow?

When you tip a waiter this is what happens. The difference in the actual check and the amount that your pay is the tip. So if the bill is 45 dollars and you leave 52, the waiter gets the 7 dollars.

The problem from a waiters perspective is that they have to claim those tips. Usually if you made 100 bucks cash in one night, you would only claim like 50 so they take out less in taxes. When you get tipped on a cerdit card, you have to claim the whole amount because there is a paper trail. So if all you tips in one night are CC's, you will make less total money because more comes out in income tax.

Here's the deal from someone who worked on tips through college as a bar back and bartender...if it is a corporate card and you have a big bill it is understandable that you put the tip on the card...
I mean it's the companies money and I understand you aren't getting that money back...and you want to leave a tip....but I learned that most companies have a limit of like 10-12%% on tips and will not accept more..so that sucks altogether.

What I don't like is the $17 bill that someone wants to run a credit card on and put $3 on the credit card...i guess the idea of low tips in any case are rude...but obviously cash is preferred the most ANYWHERE especially on the tips 99% of the time..

I usually tip 20 for anyone that gives me adequate service. 10-15 if they just are horrible and more than 20 when the are exceptional.

But now I see tippers for everything fast food, ice cream and cookie places. I'm sorry but I'm not giving you money just for reaching for a cookie and placing it in a lil bag for me.

If you actually have to do some minimal effort than yes.
