I was talking to my son tonight about how things were when I was a kid. I just went to Catholic grammer school, came home, my Mom would fix dinner, my dad would come home from the firehouse and I would play with my brothers and sisters. We could get on the subway and not fear for our lives..I remember one time getting lost in Parchester and I went up to some man and told him. He took my hand and found the nearest policeman to help me. I remember playing in Pelham Bay Park with my friends and not worrying about a thing.
My son remembers carrying a knife to high school in case he had to defend himself. He remembers me taking him to school , which was only 3 blocks a day, because at the the time there was a serial kidnapper working in the North Bronx. He remembers when I used to pick his mother up in Mid-town Manhattan when she worked overtime because I didn't wnat her traveling the subways late at night, He remembers when I would always carry my gun , even when I went to the hardware store.
God....how times have changed!
