I was watching this movie tonight and it brought back some memories.

When I was in the Coast Guard, I was stationed with the Second Coast Guard Flotilla 1972-1973...just at the end of the US involvement in Viet Nam...I don't talk about this too much.

I was involved in an evacuation of a village just north of Saigon. I was airlifted with my helicopter and an Air Force helicopter to evac civilians south. What I saw was horrific. Dead bodies all over...the village was on fire ..yet we got 15 people out to safety,,,after a fire fight..we were on the ground for over an hour....my first and last one...I don't often talk about this but I feel compelled after seeing this movie....I'd like to know if any of those people lived but I know that's impossible to find out.

Wow, Reesh, that's seriously hardcore shit. I have and probably will never have any idea about the true horrors of war. I would imagine there's nothing that can even come close to re-creating it short of being right in 'the shit'. It is impossible for me to wrap my mind around what that experience must do to you emotionally and psychologically. I don't think I could handle it, but once again I guess it's something you can never know until you're there. I would assume that instinct just takes over and hopefully your training kicks in and you do what you have to to get you and anyone else you can out safe. I'm also sure it must be very difficult to talk about, but it is one of those things that can and will enrich the lives of anyone willing to listen and learn from what you went through and what you have to say about it. Plus your police work, plus your clinic work. You're a hell of a guy, and I'm honored to have shook your hand.

Reeshy puts John Kerry to shame.

You're a fine American.

one of my favorite movies...

the Tears Of A Clown song turned out to be great in the 'party' scene...

the Dafoe shooting death scene was a bit 'over the top'

Thus concluding my post.

PS- my Pops was in Vietnam, he was one of the Minutemen. A helicopter parachuter as i am told. He earned many awards from that standpoint.

As a kid, my uncle told me a story about when he was in Vietnam, he watched as someone threw a VC out of a helicopter.

That shit stays with you. Reeshy - you have my respect.

I never saw anybody thrown out of a helicopter (except me on training missions...I was a survival swimmer) Being in the Coast Guard...I thought I would never see combat except for rescue missions...this one was out of the ordinary and the first time that I had to use a weapon...hope I never see it again....even NJlumberdude never heard this story before!!!!

It's weird, i don't know if you(or anyoen for that matter) has pictures of 'Nam but i was lookin' through my dads awhile back and it's all pic of him and his friend(one my uncle) and they look liek they're not even phased but then one pic stand out. About 3 or 4 marines witha Vietnamese man on his knees, that picture REALLY makes me feel sick in the stomach.

Yes I do and they're mostly me with my helicopter or in my dungarees doing some clean up on the ship...I do have some photos of me and some friends when we were actually "in country",,,no kneeling VC...just us feeding some kids and putting bandages on an old man.....Not all of us over there were bad guys!!

Yes...the impression I had gotten from your statement was that they were doing something bad...you said that you were sick to your stomach...so I assumed that you thought it was bad...my mistake...biut it is war and you got to do what you have to to stay alive!!!

My Bad, i shoulda been more clear. They were really just standing around him but the guys looked mortified.

Whatever they did though i'd rather not even know about or get into it for that matter.

You guys served your Country well.

I don't talk about this too much.

That's the weird, admirable thing about most Vets. They don't try and flaunt they incredible things they did, or brag about it. It just happened, and they did what they had to do, and that's that.

Well, except for Kerry.

But the rest...there was a quote from "Band of Brothers" that put it best...

"Grandpa, were you a hero in the war?"

"No...but I served with a company full of them."

Just totally selfless and always wanting to talk up the guy who was next to him as opposed to himself.

God bless ya, reesh.
