Everyone knows where they were and what they were doing on September 11th... You guys remember anything about the day before- you know- the last day of innocence- the day before our entire world went completely to shit- when God just kinda said- 'fuck it.'
I remember chilling in a local bar, getting drunk with a buddy and my dad, watching the Giants get obliterated by the Broncos.

i was sitting behind home plate at yankee stadium waiting out a rain delay -- clemens going after his 20th win against the red sox ...
i thought the most interesting that week would be sitting two rows behind jon lovitz doing schtik for his buddies ...
at that point, i was nine months unemployed and the biggest thing on my mind was hoping my last interview went well ...

But its crazy because a week before 9/11 we went to NYC to shop and drove by WTC...

My friends and I went to a bar in Hoboken every Monday night. This particular Monday, I drove home from Hoboken to Hawthorne absolutely shitfaced. I blacked out getting on Rt. 17 off of Rt. 3. I came too driving 80 mph through the parking lot of Nabisco on Rt. 208 (About a 15 minute ride for those who don't know), directly at the building. I made it home and pissed on my then girlfriend's bedside table in the middle of the night. It was shortly after that that I tore a hole in my alcohol degenerated esophagus from vomiting. After that, coupled with the horrors of the next day and the feelings it evoked about the value of my life, I rethought some things.

I had just flown back from Chgo to NYC, where I live now. I worked 16 hours 8 a.m. to midnight in midtown and had to drop some work off at WTC 2 at about 1:00 a.m. I finally got to sleep at 4 in the morning. My phone started ringing just after the first plane hit (my family in chicago) I can remember being pissed off at the person who was waking me up!

I don't know the specifics, but I was at school, and it was a Monday, and I had four classes that day, AND it was still pretty early in the semester, so no doubt I was still well into "work-mode" in terms of school shit.

My gf at the time had dumped me the night before. I sent her flowers and was trying like hell to find some way to work things out, so I was already miserable.
Now I'll get to always remember the date she dumped me, yippity-doo....

This is a very good idea for a topic. I've actually thought about this myself and realized how much it displays a good example of the fact that we really DO remember everything we do, but our minds just store it somewhere where we can't access it at will... Only something like September 11th could make us remember the slightest details of the previous day.
My story, while probably not as interesting or sad as some of yours, is quite memorable for me.
I was actually in the city on September 10th, on the upper west side, visiting a friend. I remember walking through Central Park. It was a gorgeous, peaceful day... And it was the last day that my life would be the way it was for 18 years. Free of any fear.
(Not to say I walk around in riot gear and avoid trips to the city. In fact, it's quite the opposite. I still find myself downtown at least twice a week, and that's not going to stop. But the thought is there. The threat is there... even if it's in the back of my mind. It's there, and it's real.)
But this is the real kicker of my September 10th. I live in The Bronx, and in order to get to the 1-9 train that takes me into the city, I need to walk down a long hill. The great thing about this hill is that it's so high up, that at a certain point, you can see straight into the city on a clear day/night. September 10th was a clear day. I remember looking at my friend and saying "Check it out. You can see the Twin Towers and the Empire State Building perfectly today." Little did I know that would be the last time I looked at those buildings. Little did I know I would be standing on the same spot on that hill the next day only to see massive clouds of smoke hovering over Manhattan.
Now, every time I walk down that hill, especially at night when the buildings are lit, I take a look at the Empire State Building and the Crysler Building, and appreciate it. But some part of me, as much as I don't want to think this way, tells me it could be the last time I look and see those buildings. As sick as that sounds, we live in an even sicker world.
So that's my September 10th story... Take it for what it's worth.

What I remember is that I was watching Die Hard with a Vengeance on DVD and I didn't make it all the way through I got tired. I intended to watch the rest of the movie the next day. For those unfamiliar, that's the one where Jeremy Irons is commiting terrorist acts around NYC and Bruce Willis and Sam Jackson have to race from one part of the city to another preventing destruction.
On the 11th, I really didn't feel like finishing the movie.

September 9 the Redskins had played the Chargers, and I guess it was the 10th when I left the US for the first and only time so far, and came back across the border with a just-opened $20 carton of Mexican Marlboros. I was a little perplexed at the Customs or Border Patrol guy who when I presented my US passport asked "Your nationality?"
"Uh, American."
"United States?"
"Yeah."
"Anything to declare?"
"Um, a hundred ninety nine cigarettes."
Then I got on the plane and flew all the way across the country with my Leatherman tool on my belt.

After work I took the train to the World Trade Center to go to China town to eat dinner. Once I got there it was raining really hard that I considered taking the train back home and try again tomorrow. I walked around the concourse of the World Trade viewing all the various stores and restaurants. Eventually I finally decided to tough out the rain and go to China town (thinking that I can eat at the various restuarants at the WTC another time). So I bought an umbrella from one of the news-stands there and walked trough the rain to eat dinner. I kept that umbrella for awhile afterwards till it broke. From time to time, I think about the people I observed while deciding where to eat that day and the ones that I bought the umbrella from and if they were there when it happened.
It took me some time to go back to NYC and when I did, the first place I went, I went to eat at the restaurant that I visited on 9/10.

I had gone down to 250 Broadway to my union office to check out some benefits iI needed to take advantage of (PBA headquarters). After that I walked passed City Hall across the street to see a friend of mine at Police HQs. We walked down Broadway to a Deli just 2 blocks from the WTC. After that, I went into the WTC see if My brother was working that day but he was off (He was a transit cop that worked the 1 train station below the WTC). THen I went home!!
Then I was back the next day.
