Are you addicted to your computer and the internet?
This news story (http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=573&ncid=573&e=3&u=/nm/20040803/od_nm/odd_finland_internet_dc) out of Finland about Finnish soldiers being deeply depressed about not having access to the web and their computers got me to thinking about it myself.
I know that early on when I got my very first real computer years ago that I had no idea how to fix it or anything. So when something went wrong I used to have to bring it to a local computer guy in Northport to fix it. Plus any upgrades I'd have to bring in as well. It always meant though that I'd be going days without access to my computer. I'd be fine for about the first day, but then after that I'd begin to really miss email, and using the web, and even using basic applications on the computer.
How vital or not so vital is your computer to you? I enjoy using mine and I think that nowadays if I did lose my ability to use my computer I probably would be depressed for a while.
I do other things other than being at the computer as well so I imagine I'd eventually get by, but I would probably miss it for a while.
If you lost your computer and your ability to get another one and to go online. Would you be okay with it, or would it affect you for a while?

Must be ESP coz I posted the same thing in a response on the dude who got fired.
Reef, I'm not addicted, but I do feel the pull when I'm away from the computer. I just shut the pull down. After being hungry for 2.5 years, that not as hard as it seems, but for some, and in the past? Oh yeah, I was an addict.
My post from other one, to save time:
I emailed Ron the first story, and about doing a piece on how the internet causes problems at home, work, school, internet widows and widowers and all that; maybe they'll do it. It's interesting. [not my stuff to Ron, the idea of, for lack of a better term, internet 'addiction' and lemme tell, I sure as hell feel it sometimes]
Must Check Ticketmaster... again!!!
Must look for that Music Gear on eBay ... again!!!
Must check my Porn Sites ... again!!!
Must checked Who's pissed of at who on RonFez dot Net, again ...!!!
Must check news sites ...who knows maybe we went to war in the last six minutes!
I feel the pull man, the Shit be callin' me! The shit be Callin' Me!

And yes I'm replying again coz it makes for two posts instead of on rambling one. New Yorker Magazine did an article on how Men, perhaps some women, but it was about Men, are now choosing Internet Porn over a date, or meeting with girlfriend or spouse.
Meaning, guys would report cutting dates off short because it wasnt so much that they got bored, it was they wanted to get back to the, and this is what they called it 'prettier, more interesting women online'. And I'm talking the Porn Movies. Not some Live Cam Chat.
Meaning, for some men, increasingly; a batch session watching your fave porn star doing upspeakable things is More Desirable then what they might call 'just average sex with the same old person'.
I will have to find this article, it was great. These guys were essentially saying. 'We've gone out so many saturday nights, even if we meet women, unless they are ready to to what Aurora Snow or Gauge or whoever do, the guy would rather go home and watch Aurora and Gauge go at it.

I am trying to stay off the internet because it has grown really tired for me. I would miss my COMPUTER if I didn't have it cause then I wouldn't be able to create any artwork or animations or anything but if I didn't have my internet access, I think I would miss it but I would be able to get by. I check random websites here and there HERE the most but besides that everything else is so tired and there is nothing really interesting out there on the web. Unless obviously I am missing something which is always usually the case. I don't even IM anyone anymore cause no one ever IM's me to say anything so in the last month my Buddy List has gone from about 84 to maybe say 25. I always feel like I am interfering with someone by IMing so I just wait to hear from whomever feels like being chatty. Maybe up to a year ago i felt a little bit addicted but now, I just find something more constructive to do with my time and the web has become like other media outlets, I get my fill and then leave. If anything I would miss is being here as a resource that I could connect to instantly.

100% addicted. I live on the computer. First off, it is how I make a living (programming, not surfing the net). But as soon as I get home I grab my laptop and start playing some R&F mp3's while I cook some dinner. Then its off to the couch to watch some TV and surf the net. I will read just about anything. Sometimes while watching the history channel or whatever, I will hear about something I do not know to much about. So I will look it up online and read about it for hours. I have done this recently with Lake Vostok.
I literally bring my laptop everywhere with me, not matter where I am in my apartment. I have a desktop that is a File/Print/Media/Music server as well as my DVD Copying machine.
I would become SO depressed with out a computer. any girl that I have ever dated for a long period of time always used to joke and say they were second to my laptop. And not even from a porn perspective, but from a time perspective.
I hardly ever use AIM anymore. Most people who I have on my buddy list I also have their phone # so I can just call or text message them. AIM is really just to talk to people who on a regular basis you would never call. It has its moments, but as a whole is a waste of time.

I agree with Fluff on this. I do a lot of graphics and dtp work so I'd mostly miss the ability to play around in graphics programs and creating things. I'd definitely miss the internet, but I think I could get by easier with losing that over the chance to be creative.

My computer and I have a symbiotic relationship. If I turn my computer off it's like I turn my brain off.

I don't think I am now. I was back a few years ago I would litterally be on the computer as soon as I got home into the wee hours of the morning. Now especially on the weekends I barely even look at the internet.

i used to be a lot more than i am now. if i was home, i was on the computer...ok thats still how it is, who am i kidding.
whenever i would get grounded my mom took the cable modem away so i would be stuck without any form of communication between message boards and all that...i would still go on from school but it wasnt the same. i would find different ways to sneak on at home or at the library or wher ever i could find a computer.
i find if i am at a computer at work i get very tempted to go to the normal websites i do from home....i dont go on the board but i have been known to hop in a chat room i visit.
if i didnt have my computer id probably just spend all my time either listening to the radio or watching tv, the outside world is scary

Yeah I'm with you graphics guys; I can do without the internet, but not my sounds and soft-synths and computer recording stuff. A computer and a good sound car and good headphones makes for some great listening, and with the right programs you can do all sorts of cool stuff.

I used to think I was, but then I'd go on vacation and have no access for like 5-7 days, and I'd come back and realize it felt GREAT to not be tied to the keyboard, and how after a day or two I totally forgot about even checking my e-mail.

I may have a slight addiction. However, I would be VERY upset if I was cut off. I have a growing number of friends in the military, and without the internet, I really wouldn't know if they are alive or not. I have 4 friends either fighting in Iraq, or stationed overseas. Sure they get phone cards, but it saves the minutes if we communicate online. I also have other contacts that are extreamely busy and cannot be reached by phone most of the time. So I stay in contact with these people through this outlet as well.
When it comes to websites and the such, I have been online A LOT lately, but that is because I am waiting to start a new job so I'm sitting home doing nothing most of the day.

When I was in school I didn't have a lot of extra time to spend on my computer. Aside from writing papers, I didn't use it much. But now that I am unemployed, I use my computer all the time. It goes on when I wake up and the only time it gets shut off is when I go to the gym or go to sleep.
I spend about 10 - 15 hours a day on my computer... However, a good portion of that time is spent researching and sending out resumes.

probably ...
the initial buzz has definitely waned a bit, i seem to use it more for practical purposes than as a source of entertainment ...

Last year when we had the blackout, I wasnt able to do anything and it was kind of scary, but I lived. Then, I also had a problem a few weeks after that when something screwed up and I could not get on the internet for 2 weeks. It was a pain in the ass, because its my primary news sourcem but again I got over it. I guess if something happened and the internet collapsed or something and it wouldnt be able to come back, I think people would just find something new to play around with pretty soon after that.

I am addicted. I think how I would react to having no computer would depend on the situation.
The problem is, I'm so tied into message boards that I just can't miss a beat. I can LIVE with missing a day, the problem comes when I WANT to be online but can't.
If I was on vacation, I would be enjoying the time off. I would be able to relax. I wuldn't want to actually be on the computer.
If I had no internet, I could live for a day. I've setup a "backup" plan for no internet. Basically, I'd organize stuff on the computer, redesign some sites and such.
If I just decided one day that I wanted to stop going online, I think it would be bearable for me. There's no concern for me "coming on two days later and having to go through 1,000 threads". I would never have to come back and catch up.
The biggest problem for me is WHAT to do with no computer. There's go outside, but it's so dull here. Honestly, last summer I would go out with friends every single fucking day and have lunch and light up firecrackers on people's lawns and fun shit like that. Now I live up here is dullsville where literally I have a 1/4 mile road and only four families live on it.
People tell me to read, but what fun is that? I do that every day, just not from a book. Besides, if it were fiction, I wouldn't enjoy it. I only like non-fiction and I could find all that crap online.
Sorry for the rant.
