View Full Version : Ron & Fez - Old School Vs. New School

I am so very pleased to hear tonight's "Best Of's" open with some GOOD Ron and Fez from the WNEW days. I almost forgot just how witty and comedically brilliant these two can be in the talk radio format.

Also, I think it's great the two newer stations (although Tampa isn't necessarily new) can hear Ron and Fez at their best. Wow, doesn't Fezzy just sound so different and happy? I mean no disrespect to D.C or WJFK but this is just very apparent to me.

I hope this thread may act as a medium to compare the two different shows (WNEW and WJFK) respectfully because I personally feel they are entirely different (a severe decrease) in quality and entertainment value not to mention the drop in humor (while stationed in D.C). This is only my opinion but I'm eager to hear those of other fans. We are obviously all R & F fans here so I'm hoping for a civil and honest approach when comparing the two shows because it's not about where the show is it's ultimately how funny and entertaining it is for the fans and Ron and Fez.

For the record I'm 50 minutes into tonight's show and I find the difference uncanny and HILARIOUS! These guys are too funny!

What do YOU think?

I do miss Joe Poo, Kenny Allen and Andre though.

That's cool and I agree however, this is a comparison of the show's two incarnations (WNEW and WJFK versions) not a thread about whether or not Ron & Fez are humorous because we don't need to be reminded of that obvious revelation. If you're able to listen to the older shows this week try and post again after the show comes back live to make a fresh and solid comparison.

Im curious to who as been picking the
segments to play for the bestof/worstof's ?

They seem to always play this segment
with Fez and his seeing numbes/colors bit.
If sure if you go back to the last bestof's
a few weeks back, you'll hear this one.

Just an observation.

I agree with this as well. As I recall they did indeed attempt at keeping with their old successful format (material and content that made for hilarious shows!) but it just went no where at WJFK. I feel this incarnation of the show (political and plain talk radio) was forced due to circumstance and has led to a severe drop off in quality, humor and interest.

I definitely wish they had more characters and bits like the old days. It really gave the show a "variety show" feel, and as a listener, it made feel like I was hearing something REALLY special.

The show today is definitely much more dedicated to just "straight talk," but that CAN work. I think the Fastest Hour stuff is some of the funniest radio R&F have done...the key there is there are no callers to bring them down. The DC callers, for the most part like to talk, and like to talk SERIOUSLY. Everyone wants to make a point...too few know to just go for the gold and get out. So R&F are catering to that...it really is just two different audiences they're delaing with, and the show had to change accordingly.

That said, I can ALWAYS turn on R&F's show and be guarenteed entertainment. And that's the important part.

I agree completely with the idea of more characters and bits would be great.

Although as someone who listened from New York I appreciate their DC shows because they're much different from their NY shows. I mean, I miss their New York style shows, but I also appreciate the fact that they're in a different market and their styles and creativity changed to the markets they're serving.

I have to admit that I don't really care for the political talk though it doesn't bother me. I just don't care to hear it, whether it be on their show or somewhere else. I can listen to people like Hannity, Franken, Rush, etc for only certain amounts of time before I need to move on. Which isn't to say that I don't like political or intellectual talk, but rather that I enjoyed when R&F would have a mindless conversation about science or comic book characters as well. It would sort've take the listener out of the real world for a little bit which is good once in a while. With that said though, I think their formula is a success, it has helped bring them to three different stations and hopefully more. I would just like to hear a little more of the characters and mindless talk as well as what they do now. I think it would be a great mix.

In any event though I still love the shows and listen to them every day on my ipod whether in the car or at work or at home and it's great. I definitely notice the change in Fezzie's voice and wish that there was a way to fix whatever it is that is depressing him. Though I'm sure he's fine with a great friend like Ron there for him.

I can't put my finger on it, but I feel like something has definately changed. Back in the day, especially when JFK played the show late-night, I really felt like I was listening to the best kept secret in radio. I loved the way the callers made their point, and then ejected with a 'seeya!'. It seems to me that you can hear the frustration in Ron's voice when every single caller now opens with 'how ya' doin'?'. Most of the time Ron either ignores them, or just mumbles 'yeah'. They've dropped a lot of catch phrases and bits that were my favorites as well. I hope that they eventually bring some of them back.

the format has changed on wjfk

fez's depression has really affected the show, ron is really supportive
the callers are more serious, so there is more discussion rather than the ridiculous tangents (that i love)

but wait until fez is back, the old rhythm will be restored whatever the topic

I was initially surprised at the lack of responses for this thread and was led to ponder how many people on this message board actually listen to the show anymore? Thanks to the cool "search" feature of this site I found out I am only, ah...er.....just about a YEAR late with this thread..

http://www.ronfez.net/messageboard/viewmessages.cfm/Forum/46/Topic/30867/page/Why_did_the_show_stop_being_funny_.htm

Guess most fans are gone by now, it is a year later and as far as I can recall nothing has changed for the better and I only recognize a few names in that thread.

Call me crazy but I do find some solace in learning that other fans of the show were feeling the same way I have been.

Opie & Anthony were cancelled?!?!? When? Why?

So it couldn't possibly be there are newer listeners/posters who ONLY know of the show in its current form? Why are they going to bother debating "old vs. new" since they only know the current show?

And along those lines, there are plenty of us out there who just roll with the punches, as it were, of the show as it changes. I can't imagine anyone thinking the show is anywhere near unlistenable as long as R&F themselves can still cut it.

If people don't like it, hey, that's their choice...but odds are they're not going to stick around the board. If they can't or don't want to listen to a radio show, why are they going to still post on a board devoted to that show? People move on. It's pretty redundant to expect a hardcore debate about whether a show is enjoyable or not on a FAN site for the show.

Just a thought.

I must have given you the wrong impression. I meant those (from last year) listeners and posters are gone however, I am sure the show has new listeners and this message board has new posters, I being one of them.

The point is that it turns out this thread was focused towards people that no longer listen or post on the board and that's why there were so very few responses. The thread I hyperlinked being evidence of that. That was my point along with actually finding people that shared the same disappointment with a show they once loved. Believe it or not it is in a way therapeutic.

The show changed, and everyone has to deal with it.

Ron has said it himself. The show now is different than the show in NY. Just like the NY show is different than when they were in Florida.

Sure, I would like more bits. I wish the Fezatorial, the Bad Guest, and Pants Puppet would return. However, they are still higly capable. The Swift Boat Veteran bits were hilarious. Iris still calls in from time to time. And we're pretty much seen a return of the Nature Boy.

But, along with this the show has moved to more intelligent topics. Politics and current events are a huge part of the show. Still, the faster hour is the best hour of radio. When its just Ron and Fez they shine through amazingly.

The rest of the night they kinda glide. They let a lot of callers on which really helps the fan base. Without Dukes and Staples they can't pick on the producers as much, but then the show gets more intelligent.

Overall, I guess its not quite as funny as the classics in NY. But anyone who bitches about the content now needs their head examined. Its well over a year now, get used to the change. No point in cross examining, 2 different shows. Both are incredibly funny.

I haven't posted on the board in over a year. My only chance to listen to the show is when they add bits to the File Library now that I live in Nashville. I was glad to see that there were still a lot of people on this board that I recognized from the past. As for the content of the show, I believe the reason it's more political is that DC just isn't a funny town. NY is hilarious. DC people are too serious. It's a place full of Lawyers, Politicians, and Business Yuppies, with very little room for the common guy. Whereas NY, while full of those types, also has every single other type of person in the world. Hell I love visiting NY and just watching the people live. They're the funniest people in the world and I, and maybe it's just me, notice a real sense of community there. I think that's why Ron and Fez were so succesful in the comic bits there.

Great Question!

Wish I had an answer; coz some just listen and bitch, listen and bitch. I'll never figure that one out; to dislike something, and be obsessed by it. Or more to the point, to dislike one's self to a point where they have to strike out at others to give purpose and meaning to their lives.

Whoa, hold on there big fella. Let's not turn this into something it isn't.

Some of us are simply fans and are disappointed with the show. Disinterested to the point where we would rather hear our hard drives hum at work than not listen to the show at all? No, of course not. Disappointed enough that we know that the Ron and Fez show CAN and SHOULD be more funny than what it has been in the last year or so.

What I'm trying to say is that the show is falling way short of it's potential and that's such a shame.

WNEW was just as bad, I don't think they put much time or effort into anything more than they have to at these stations. Management obviously has no problem with it so I guess you can't blame the staff for blowing off "Best Of's".

I don't think people get "pissed" about some liking the old shows more. Personally, I think they'd have to be deaf not to. People just tend to get defensive if they perceive (correctly or incorrectly) somebody saying the show, and by default, R&F, are no good anymore, period.

It's a fan site. You gotta expect that attitude. Especially since now you have listeners who have no idea at all what the old shows were like. They're fans based on the R&F Show of today. The day when you REALLY have to worry is when there's nobody left who's passionate about the show in ANY form.

The show is obviously different in many ways. as an Ny listener, here are somethings that are out of their control that happen that may make me like the show less.

talkign about DC and stuff in DC, like restaurants. It was much more fun to listen to them talk about their days when they were in NY, because it is easier to relate. when they talked about going to mortons, or the diner, i knew where all these places were. just gave it a more "being like friends" attitude

People in management - The people on thier show and people they talked about were all NY people, some carried over from other shows. Black earl from O&A. The same with all the Jeremy jokes. Now they have new managment they talk about and joke about, but i have no feel for the interaction with other shows because R&F are the only show i listen to.

People working for them - they do nto have the defining person anymore, like an Al Dukes or Billy Staples. The studio, set-up and show format allowed them to get more involved in the daily lives of these people so as listens, we got to relate to them more. With Al being from NJ and Billy from LI, even stories about them growing up were easy to relate to. Take J-Dubbs for example. he grew up in Michigan, and when he tells a story, it is just not the same.

Friends - I am sure for many people it was very cool every friday night to turn on the show and hear people that you know and hang out with or chat on the board with being on the show. it gives it an extra special feeling. once they moved and made new everyday friends, things changed.

Drinking - Nothing more to say. drunk shows were always great. the rules forbid it, so there is nothing that can do about that.

Callers - Enough people have commented on this above. And I feel the same. The NY callers just had a different mindset than the DC callers. not so much of an agenda and not so much about always trying to have a debate or 2 hour conversation. Quick, funny calls from NY callers. (obviously this is a generalization, some NY callers sucked and some DC callers are great)

Attitude - you can tell to this day how much ron loved working and living in NYC. i have noticed this a lot in the past few weeks, but he has started a lot more stories "when i was living in NY" or "back in NY". he really has very fond memories of being here. Liking your job and where you are make a HUGE difference in your mental health and well being (apparent in Fez) as well as your outgoing personality. its not like they have to come in and do a 1/2 hour TV show. they talk for 4 hours per day, 5 days per week. if you are not happy, or AS happy when comparing to NY, it will come out eventually. Do i think they hate it in DC?? No. but i feel like they miss NY, all the love they got from the fans, being in the #1 market and doing great, consitantly gaining listeners, and just putting on a great show night after nights.

FCC - i think this is a huge deal for them and not wanting to get sued. i am sure they have to watch out with this one.

No matter what, as long as I can I will listen to the show. i think they are both great and they really keep me entertained. I miss them in NYC, but truthfully I listen more now than before because I have the shows on my computer which means even if I am busy from 7-11, i can still here the show. things change and so do people. they rolled with the punches and are now doing great.

I can make it a lot simpler, at least for why the show sounds as it does. It's election time, you have an election that has people fired up, and if yer in talk radio, yer gonna steer the show where the callers and listeners want to go. So, it's a bit more news and politics. My opinion, anyway.

Lionel went from a WFLA ham and egger to WABC Morning Host with Big ratings [for a while] for one simple reason: The OJ Case. He admits it completely; it was the greatest timing ever. Because NO One wanted to talk about anything else. He was a lawyer, he'd done trial law, he dissected the legal minutia, and the ratings went wayyyy up.

Oh, some Say they didnt want to hear about it, but if you went to them, 'Did you hear what happened in the OJ Trial' the person would be 'What?!?!?? Tell Me NOW!". We were that hooked. The numbers showed it for him, thats for sure. Yes that was me the regular caller.

[Edit: I have a picture of me and Lionel. Ron Bennington is about a foot taller then Lionel.]
